“Mr. Brewer!” Patrick looks up from his desk. “Hi, Katie, what’s up?” He asks. He’s getting used to students popping in with questions between classes, but Katie is usually pretty quiet. “I was talking to Jonah and, well, we were wondering how things went with Mr. Rose?” She giggles. Patrick sighs. “What are you kids up to? Dav- Mr. Rose and I are friends from university, nothing more. And besides, the romantic lives of your teachers should not be what you kids are worrying about.” “Romantic lives, huh? So there is something there.” Patrick nearly drops his head to his desk in defeat before remembering that he’s supposed to be the adult in this situation. “Get to class, Katie.” Katie sighs dramatically, turning on her heels and heading back out the door toward whatever class she has this period. Patrick shakes his head and tries to ignore the fact that his students can see right through him.

“Okay, what’s up? You’re watching me eat like you’re expecting something I don’t see coming and it’s freaking me out,” he says. “Sorry, I was just thinking.” “And thinking requires watching me eat?” “Yes. Yes it does.” “Care to explain what you’re thinking about?” “I was thinking about maybe eating with you under different circumstances. Different settings.” Patrick’s heart speeds up, hoping David is about to say what he thinks he is. “Different settings like?” “Like maybe a nice restaurant? I hear there’s a surprisingly good Italian place in Elmdale.” “Oh, well if you’re inviting me to a nice Italian dinner, I don’t think I could turn that down,” he smiles. A date, he thinks, David hasn’t said the word specifically, but he’s asking Patrick on a date, right? “How about tomorrow night? I’d offer to pick you up, but you’re the one with the car. I’ll buy dinner if you drive?”  “Pick you up at 7?” “It’s a date,” David confirms, and Patrick’s heart whirs in anticipation.
