And you, Damon Albarn, do you think it is possible to have a calm conversation about cultural appropriation? D.A: Why are you asking me this question, when it is obvious that I am not doing what I do to appropriate anything? Where is the line that separates the acceptable from the unacceptable? Sometimes we want to get involved in an area because we are passionate about it, out of love: that’s what we’re talking about. Are you also accusing me of appropriating Malian cuisine because I’ve learned how to prepare it? If I dig a hole in the ground and make slaves work there to make myself rich, then yes, I could be accused of doing something morally wrong. I grew up in an East London neighborhood in the 70s, between a Jamaican family and a Pakistani family, with whom I spent a lot of time. Have I appropriated their culture? I love my own culture, I love other people’s culture, I love what humans do. I find it difficult to say anything in this debate, because it totally misses what inspiration is.
