Top photo: Elizabeth “Libbie” Bacon of Monroe Michigan met George Custer in 1862 when she was 20, her age when this photo was taken. The same year she graduated as valedictorian from the Young Ladies’ Seminary and Collegiate Institute in Monroe. Custer pursued her despite her father’s disapproval. The bottom photo was taken about the time of their marriage in 1864.
