. summary / request : finding out that your pregnant is an exciting thing-- for most. but with your boyfriend set to go off to war for two years, you worry over whether or not it's the right time to start a family. (request by @diamonddiv245)
. notes / warning : pregnancy, mentions of war, mentions of periods and all that stuff, slight angst, tooth rotting fluff, swearing, happy ending, more may be included.
It had been about a week since your period was presumably due, and you were starting to get worried.
Of course, tracking it was always a tricky thing-- it was normal for the dates to fluctuate and for it to come later or earlier than usual, but considering what you'd been up to in the past month, you were beginning to consider that its lateness may have been caused by something else more serious.
Plus, the occasional throw-ups truly only seemed to be there to prove your point.
Elvis had been your boyfriend of five years, and counting. Although most couples didn't last so long, especially after having gone through high school together, the two of you were practically inseparable.
You supported Elvis through his career, coming on any trips you could, but most of the time, you had to stay at Graceland. His mother, of course, didn't mind your company at all, and you made sure to keep her company and to help her around the house. Especially now that she was drinking more and more, you'd keep a close eye on her more often than not.
But, even with the support from your family and his, you knew that a child going without a father for the first two years of its life would be cause for disaster. Him going off to Germany was bad enough-- but the chances of you having a child during that time? You could only worry about the outcome.
Elvis wasn't home when you slipped off to the doctor's to take a pregnancy test. Your heart beat erratically in your chest as you drove off, your nervousness almost causing you to crash several times. You did, however, manage to get there in one piece.
Taking in a seat in the waiting room (as you'd already spoken to the lady at the front desk), you fidgeted idly with your hands, clothing-- really anything you got a hold of.
"Y/N L/N," a monotone voice read out.
Your stomach filled with dread.
Slowly, nervously, you entered the doctor's room. You were met with an average looking man, presumably in his thirties, who greeted you kindly.
"Take a seat."
The process was quick enough. He asked you to pee in a cup so they could have a urine sample-- which, gross-- but you did it anyway. You listened intently and quietly as he explained the process of how the test worked, that is, until he spoke of when you'd get the results.
"We'll give you a call in about two weeks to tell you if the test is positive or not."
Time seemed to stop. Two weeks? How were you supposed to keep that information from Elvis for two whole goddamn weeks?
"Um, okay, thank you."
The doctor smiled at you reassuringly, and you did your best to return it before beelining straight for the door. The hospital was causing you much too much stress and anxiety.
Shit, shit, shit!
What were you going to do? You didn't want to just tell Elvis that you'd taken the test before you got the results-- you didn't want to worry him unnecessarily. But, then again, he did deserve to know. He was to be the father of whatever child you may or may not have.
Elvis wasn't home for most of the first week-- something about needed to get more press (you never really knew when it came to the Colonel)-- which, you supposed was good. It gave you time to try and decompress due to the whole situation.
The second week, though, Elvis was home most of the time, making sure to make up for all his time spent away from you and Gladys. It was nice, too, having him home, though you did find that his lack of knowledge of the situation was starting to weigh on your conscience.
"Hey, Elvis, what are your thoughts on a family?"
The question seemed to catch Elvis off-guard, who stared at you in surprise for all but a fleeting moment.
"You mean havin' a family of our own?" You nodded. It was then that a smile slowly crept onto his face.
"Well, I s'pose I wouldn't mind having some little Presleys running 'round the house." His grin only grew wider when he paused and stared in your direction. "And I quite like the ring of Mrs. Presley for you, if you know what I mean."
You let out a chuckle at his statement, and he did the same, before capturing your lips in his. He was sly, just barely parting your lips before slipping his tongue inside you mouth, causing a small groan to escape your lips.
He then slowly pulled away, opting to rest his forehead against your own. "After the war," and there it was-- those words that you had been dreading for him to say. "I'm gonn' come back, I'm gonna give you the bestest welcome any man's ever given to his woman, and I'm gonna marry the shit outta' you, until even the Lord is on his knees in awe."
And, in spite of the new sinking feeling in your stomach, you couldn’t help but feel your grin grow wider as you nodded, before pressing another kiss on Elvis’s lips.
The evening that you got the call, Elvis wasn’t at home.
For the past day or so you’d been camping by the only telephone in the house, picking up practically every call that rung. You were sure you already knew the answer, anyway– your period had still not come, putting you at nearly a month past your due date.
When the phone rang beside you, you were quick to pick it up. You didn’t get so much as a word in before the person on the other end spoke, “Hello, is this Y/n L/n?”
You eyes widened as you nodded, before you let out a small laugh. You’d momentarily forgotten that the person on the opposite end could not see you.
“Yes, who is this?”
“Ms. L/n, this is Dr. Owens! I’ve called to inform you that your results are positive! Congratulations!”
Your lips parted in surprise. Of course, you’d expected as much, but hearing it confirmed by someone else made it feel all the more real.
“Uh, thank you, Doctor. I appreciate it.”
You hung up before he could respond.
You let out a dry chuckle, no humor evident in it. Just my luck. Of course you got pregnant right before Elvis went to war. And– what, you only do it a couple of times and this happens?
It wasn’t like you hadn’t thought about having a child before, in the future. With Elvis’s whirlwind of a career and the fact that he was shipping off to Germany for two years, the least you thought you could do was wait until everything died down and you could settle down with him.
It was then that you heard the front door open and close, and in came Elvis, battered and tired from a presumably long day. Speak of the devil.
Upon seeing your form curled up on the couch, Elvis offered you a kind smile. “Hey baby.”
Walking over to you and giving you a tender kiss on your forehead, he was surprised to find that you leaned away from his touch. You didn’t mean to, of course, but you couldn’t help it. All your pent up guilt over the past was starting to fester– and Elvis, being the cause of your guilt, made you almost instinctually pull away from him.
“Baby?” Elvis’s voice was soft, gentle as he sat down beside you and placed a hand on your shoulder. “Is anythin’ wrong?”
You stared at Elvis and your lips parted, as if to say something, before you slowly closed them and shook your head. “It’s nothing.” Elvis, however, didn’t seem convinced.
“Bullshit.”
You stared at him wide-eyed. “What?”
“I call bullshit. You ain’t been acting like yourself for weeks now, Y/n. I know there’s somethin’ you ain’t tellin’ me.”
You sunk into yourself. “I told you, Elvis. It’s nothing.”
“Bullshit.”
Upon seeing your conflicted expression, Elvis let out a small sigh. “Look, Y/n, you don’t have to tell me now, but whatever this is, it’s obviously botherin’ you, and you’re going to have to tell me at some point.”
You bit your lip before you spoke. “I’m pregnant.” Your voice barely exceeded in a whisper, and you silently wished Elvis wouldn’t be able to hear you.
He, of course, did, and, eyes widening, said, “What?” At his surprised expression, you felt a hole grow in your stomach, though it was soon filled as Elvis’s face of surprised was slowly replaced by a wild grin. “Baby, why didn’t ya’ tell me earlier?– That’s amazing!”
“So you’re not– mad?”
Elvis let out a laugh, “Mad? Why on Earth would I be mad?”
“Well, uh, you’re–” You were momentarily cut off by a sweet kiss to your lips, catching you off-guard as you let out a muffled moan. Elvis, in response, only laughed more before reluctantly pulling away. “Sorry, baby, I just couldn’t help myself.”
“It’s okay,” you whispered.
“Now, what were you saying?”
“Well,” you felt that pit in your stomach return just as it were before. “Elvis, you’re going off to war for two years. I’m not exactly sure if this is a great time to start a family.”
To this, Elvis paused, deep in thought. “Well, you were talking about startin’ a family before, right?” You nodded. “Well, every family has its challenges. My daddy went off to prison, and I had to start workin’. And your mama– she died when you were just a young girl, didn’t you say?” At the mention of your mother, your eyes floated to the ground in shame, though Elvis was quick to gently tilt your chin towards him. “Baby, I’m sorry, but, look– all I’m trying to say is, we’ve both had challenges once it’s came to family, and that’s all this’ll be. Another challenge.”
“Another challenge,” you echoed, allowing your mind to wander.
“And– look, I’ll call you every day to ask you about our son or daughter, and I’ll send you presents all the time, and I’ll visit whenever I can, alright?” Your eyes were distant as he spoke, and you were only startled out of your thoughts when you felt a hand gently squeeze your own.
“You hear me, baby?”
“Um, yeah,” you said, nodding. “Okay.”
Elvis smiled. “Good.” He then pulled you in for yet another kiss, this one longer, before slowly placing a hand over your belly. “You know, I think this one’s gonna be a girl.”
You quirked an eyebrow. “Oh yeah?”
“Mmm, I can feel it.”
You allowed your smile to linger for a while before you were harshly brought back to reality. “Elvis?” Your voice was once again quiet and meek as you whispered out his name.
“Yes?”
You took a deep breath. “What if you don’t come back?”
It was then that Elvis’s voice grew dark. “Now, darlin’, I love you beyond belief, but I don’t want to ever hear those words come out of those pretty lips of yours again, you hear me?”
You bit the inside of your cheek. “Well, it’s just–” You sighed. “I don’t know, I just… They’ve been talkin’ about the war getting worse and worst, and I… I guess I just don’t know what I’d do without you– what we’d do without you.”
“Listen here, okay? I ain’t never leaving you, Y/n– or this baby, you got that? I will go to the ends of the Earth and back just so I could be back with you.”
Silence. He allowed the weight of his words to sink in.
“Do you promise?
To this, Elvis could only laugh as he spoke his next words. “‘Course darlin’. I promise.”

You'd never been the subject of Steve's wrath-- not directly, that is. And although you knew he sometimes had quite the temper, you also knew that, most of the time, he was able to remain quite calm.
You simply hoped that was the case this time.
You let out a shaky breath as your hand hovered over his office door, not yet ready to knock— though you supposed that you’d never truly be really. It wasn’t like this outcome was the one you desired.
Eventually, in spite of your wants, you knocked, quietly, three times, and silently wished that the door wouldn’t open at all.
But it seemed as though nothing had been quite in your favor as of recent, as the door opened seconds after you knocked, and before you, Steve. His smile radiated in a way that, in normal circumstances, would have erupted the butterflies in your stomach, but now only made your heart sink to the bottom of your chest.
“Steve.”
You didn’t want to look at him. And so, you didn’t-- simply kept your eyes glued to the ground.
“Y/n,” Steve greeted as he quietly beckoned for you to enter, to which you obliged. “To what do I owe the pleasure?”
Your expression shifted to one of utter desperation, even if only for fleeting moments. You stared at the floor.
"Steve, I, uh..." It should have been so much simpler to say-- Steve, I've accepted another job offer-- but that wasn't the case, not now. Although you knew that you weren't screwing him over financially, you knew that you'd be doing so mentally. Relationships never lasted very long when either person was on the opposite end of the country.
You took a deep breath.
“I’ve taken another job offer.” The words came out quieter than intended, but you knew he could hear them. The atmosphere of the room shifted.
You stared at up Steve for a moment-- tried to analyze his emotions-- and upon finding nothing that hinted towards them, you bowed your head down in shame.
“The day before we were going to fly out?” Steve’s inquiry was calm yet accusatory. Hesitantly, you nodded.
“From who?”
Another deep breath. “Elvis.”
You didn't even know you'd called him by his first name when you said it.
“So he fucked you?”
The question was more so a statement than the latter. Your brows furrowed as you raised your head in order to voice some kind of protest, but the words died on your tongue the moment you stared up at Steve.
What could you say? You knew that telling him the truth would be no help, nor would denying the info. And so, you just accepted it-- let the words sink into your bones and linger there.
You nodded.
A silence settled amongst the two of you-- an uncomfortable silence, but a silence that you did not dare break. You felt as if it would be too out of place to do so.
"So, that's it then?" Steve muttered, a dry chuckle leaving his lips. "Just a little work fling, and then you're gone?" He paused, let in a breath, and stared directly at you.
"But I do have to ask," he said as he walked closer to you, nearly closing the gap between your bodies. "Was any of it even real? You know-- or was that just some little thing you did to entertain yourself."
Yes, Steve. It was real. It still is. That's what you wanted to say-- that's what you wanted to scream. It was real-- of course it was real. But you knew better than to say that. It would only pave way for more heartache.
"Oh," Steve seemed to take your silence as an answer. "Alright then. Well, I suppose you should be on your way. I'll cancel your plane tickets."
Nodding slowly, you started to head towards the door, though not before foolishly looking over your shoulder to glance at Steve one last time.
Never shall you forget the pain-stricken expression on his face that you saw that day. Never shall you forget that heartbroken feeling that spread from your heart to your entire body and swallowed you whole. And never-- never-- shall you forget Elvis who, after only knowing you for a couple of months, stole your entire future from you.
The flight to Las Vegas (as you came to learn) wasn't half that bad.
Of course, being stuck between two strangers was nothing fun, but you were shut off from Elvis and the rest of the Memphis Mafia-- and for that, you'd consider yourself grateful. Although you wouldn't say that you were particularly grateful for anything nowadays, you supposed you could make an exception.
When the plane eventually landed, you felt a pit grow in your stomach that you couldn't shake off. And all you could think was, I was supposed to be here with Steve. Here, of course, being somewhere else across the country.
When you joined Elvis and the rest of the Memphis Mafia, Elvis didn't offer you so much as a hello. You wondered if part of it had to do with his wife clinging closely to his side, though another part of you hoped that he had already grown sick of you.
If things stay this way, maybe this whole thing won't be too bad.
If only that could have been the case.
Priscilla was a kind and gorgeous woman, and the two of you got along quite well-- Priscilla had explained her previous lack of communication with other women during her time spent with the Memphis Mafia, so she seemed more than glad to spend time with you. You, too, immensely enjoyed your moments spent with her and appreciated her company whenever she offered it.
When you arrived at your room in the International Hotel, you were surprised, to say the least, to find that your key unlocked the door to a large suit. You were vaguely aware of the fact that the International Hotel was paying for Elvis's residency, but for you-- a simple costume designer? It was quite extravagant.
With all of the upsides to this trip in mind, you tried to limit your thoughts to only the good aspects of the job you'd accepted. And for the longest while, it wasn't that hard. You found it quite easy to lose yourself in the luxury of it all. You'd made some friends and found that enjoying your time was, to say the least, quite easy.
And yet, the guilt of leaving Steve was gnawing at your heartstrings, slowly but surely.
You let out a content hum as you delicately sowed one of the outfits for another one of the background vocalists. You knew you had a couple more to go, but luckily everyone was busy rehearsing and practicing for the first show, so you had some time to finish all of them.
Of course, you weren't the only one who was piecing together the clothing, and technically you only really needed to design it, not put it together like you were doing now, but you would have been lying if you'd denied the fact that it helped you clear your mind.
Sewing clothing was always such a meticulous task-- mess up on one thread, and the entire thing was ruined. (Of course, not specifically to the general audience or public, but people who noticed, noticed.) One would have to stay impossibly focused in order to catch any mistakes before they became nearly impossible to mend.
And so, you were very focused on the task at hand. So focused, in fact, that you didn't hear the knock on your door. It took a certain someone calling out your name to startle you out of your trance-like state.
Over the previous few days, you'd hardly spoken to Elvis. You often toyed with the notion that it was the only reason you'd forgotten how you'd acquired this job. And it was good-- being able to pretend that you weren't forced to work for him-- being able to pretend that this was exactly where you wanted to be.
But, as is with all fantasies, yours was shattered in a matter of seconds. For, no matter how much you tried to forget your current circumstances, it was simply impossible.
You tensed up, briefly, upon hearing your name being called once.
Another knock. "Y/n L/n," the voice repeated, tone firmer.
Much to your surprise (and delight), the voice did not, in fact, belong to the one and only Elvis Presley. Walking over to the door and opening it, you were met with an unfamiliar face. By the looks of it, the man before you seemed to know you, though the feeling was not mutual.
"I was instructed to guide you to Mr. Presley's dressing room for designing and fitting." Upon your lack of reply, the man stared at you, eyes bored yet expectant.
"Well, aren't you going to get your things?" He then asked, causing a small heat to spread along your cheeks.
"Oh, um, yes. Just-- give me a minute, please."
In response, the man simply hummed, clearly irritated yet uncaring all at once.
Once you had gathered the belongings that you presumed you needed, the man before you quickly turned around and started walking rather rapidly. You had trouble keeping up with his quick pace, and for a moment considered that that may have been the point.
"Thank you," is all you said once you'd reached your destination, no true appreciation evident in your voice. In response, the man simply nodded, before promptly leaving you to your own devices.
Hesitantly, you knocked on Elvis's dressing room. Your finger tapped nervously on your notebook as you awaited for the door to open.
The door swung open aggressively, revealing a smiling Elvis. In response to his cheery-looking deposition, you feigned a smile, eager to leave as soon as possible.
"Y/n! Come in, come in." Tentatively, you obliged, all but scared of what would happen if you disobeyed him.
"Haven't talked to you in a while, sweetheart. How've you been?" The pet name so easily slipped off of his tongue, you almost missed it.
You let out a small chuckle, and you lied. You lied straight through your teeth. "I've been good."
At your response, Elvis's smile grew impossibly wider, and you sank into yourself. You simply felt so small compared to him-- so terribly insignificant standing in front of him.
"Good! Now, why don'cha take a seat?" Elvis then offered, to which you obeyed. "I'll be right back," he then muttered, before exiting the room.
You fidgeted idly with your hands as you waited for Elvis to return, silently hoping he never would. But, in spite of your wishes, he did.
"Sorry, jus' needed to get something done," Elvis said when he returned, taking a seat next to you.
The designing process wasn't quite as bad as you thought it’d be, and Elvis had this unnerving ability to make everything seem as though it were completely normal and that he had not, in fact, threatened you into working for him. It made even you begin to question if that was truly what had happened.
“All white. I want it to be all white.”
“So the opposite of your last outfit?”
Elvis let out a chuckle at your comment and nodded slowly. “Suppose so.”
You would have been lying if you didn’t admit that you let your guard down– even if only slightly. But who could really blame you? Elvis was a charming man. It only made sense that he could break your walls down so easily.
“So, that’s it? Just an all-white jumpsuit? Nothing else?”
At your question, Elvis bit his lip briefly in contemplation. “What do you have in mind?”
You smiled.
Once you had just about exactly what you needed in terms of design, you cleaned up your items on the table before turning your focus onto Elvis. “Call me back in once you undress,” is all you said before walking towards the exit. Yet, just as you were about to leave, Elvis spoke:
“Actually, could you do me a favor and lock the door?”
You paused, gulped slowly, and stared at said door. “Oh, uh, I’m afraid that I can’t lock it from the outside.”
“I know.”
Elvis didn’t even bother staring at you as those words left his mouth.
Your eyes widened, and yet, in spite of your now erratically beating heart, you obliged, walking up hesitantly to the door and locking it, the click causing your stomach to fill with dread.
Now very tense, your eyes wandered over to Elvis’s, doe-like in their utter confusion and worry.
At this, he seemed to smile as he let out a small, satisfied hum. “Don’t be so tense. S’fine. Go on, take a seat. Loosen’ up a little.” Nervous as to what he’d do if you declined the invitation to sit, you obeyed, though you in no way ‘loosened up’.
Leg bouncing up and down, you nervously stared at the ground, focused on not making eye contact or even stare at Elvis if you didn't need to.
If Elvis noticed your persevering odd behavior, he didn't mention it, instead opting to undress himself in a rather slow manner. At your lack of movement when he finished, he let out a small cough as to grab your attention. "You gonna do this, doll?"
Your eyes flickered over to Elvis's and, nodding, you stood up, grabbing your measuring tape as you did so. You feigned a smile. "Of course."
You tried to avoid skin contact as you measured Elvis’s hips, waist, etc. Of course, when it came to most clients, you tried to do the same— just nowhere near on the same level. The length you went to ensuring your skin didn’t brush over his own outweighed every other time you tried to make sure it didn’t happen.
And yet, in spite of your meticulous attempts to ensure that your skin didn’t make contact with Elvis’s, there was no avoiding the inevitable. Your fingers lightly brushed over his bear skin, and he shivered and let out what you’d argue to be a rather pleased sound.
You didn’t mention it, though— just allowed the moment to fizzle away.
However, it didn’t seem as though that’s what Elvis had in mind.
There were moments that you were sure you felt the ghost of a kiss against your skin, gone before you could truly notice it.
You let out a soft exhale once you had— finally— finished. Slowly backing away, you were quite surprised to feel a calloused hand grip your arm.
Time seemed to pause right then and there. You froze, eyes wide as you felt Elvis guide you towards him, until you were mere inches away from his bare form.
“Elvis?” You questioned, albeit shakily. Elvis’s eyes were distant yet focused as he stared at you. He said nothing.
“Elvis.” Your voice was firmer now, despite your now present discomfort. Once again, Elvis did not respond. It was as if he were in some kind of trance.
It was then that you tried to pull yourself away from him, in vain. Elvis’s grip on your arm all-so-suddenly grew firm, and you found yourself unable to tear yourself away from his vice grip.
In spite of your struggling, Elvis then drew you closer to him. You let out a small whimper as he dug his nails into your skin, successfully putting an end to your squirming.
And, in spite of your fear, when Elvis kissed you ever so tenderly and sweetly, hands cradling your chin and waist in such a delicate and caring manner, you found that you were easily fooled, even if only for fleeting moments. You indulged in his poison, sweet and smooth like honey along your tongue.
It was easy— to imagine that he was someone else— to imagine that he was Steve.
And then, the kiss grew hungry, and Elvis all but devoured you desperately, greedily, as if you were some kind of life force. You tried to push away from his vice grip but found that your efforts were futile as he bit down on your lower lip, nearly drawing blood. You let out a small whimper as he deepened the kiss all the more so, his tongue slipping between your lips and eagerly exploring the insides of your mouth.
Finally, after what felt like an eternity of being glued together, he pulled away and stared at you, a satisfied smile on his face. He didn’t give you so much as a moment to breathe before he suffocated you in yet another kiss.
You hadn’t even noticed that the two of you had moved until your back made harsh contact with a table.
Elvis then moved along to your collarbone and neck, kissing, licking and biting you skin however he pleased. It was only then that you could breath, breaths erratic as you heaved in as much air as possible. You let out a gasp as Elvis’s lithe fingertips brushed over your panties.
It was then that you now yelled out Elvis’s name— an albeit quiet yell, though frantic in its nature. Upon hearing his name for the third time. Elvis seemed to snap out of whatever trance he was in. He stared at you, eyes half-lidded as he did so.
"Yes, baby?"
He stared at you so innocently, eyes swimming with confusion as he presumably wondered what he could have possibly been doing wrong.
"I- uh, I can't--" It seemed as though the words refused to escape your lips as you spoke, your thoughts whirling in such a dizzying fashion.
"Elvis, I-- we can't do this. Not here, not now." Not ever. "This isn't professional."
At your comment, Elvis paused and stared at you, before slowly bringing his hand over to grasp your own. A sly grin made its way onto his face as almost imperceptibly slid on of his hands along your thigh, a mischievous glint in his eyes.
"Oh, c'mon now," he coaxed, "you've just been doin' such a great job at your work so far. Why don't you just lay back and let me take care of you, hmm?"
The suggestion sounded tempting, but you knew it was wrong. "You have a wife!--" The words escaped your lips before you could stop them. "You have a wife, and a family, and..." you quickly tried to think of an excuse to get out of this situation. "I can't be known as a home wrecker. I will not be know as a home wrecker."
"No one'll know we're here. They can't come in, and I doubt they'll be able to hear us," Elvis protested, his fingers barely brushing against your cheek. "No one'll know shit. Priscilla ain't here to bother us. No one'll know."
You could tell that he was getting angry. His brows furrowed ever so slightly and you could see that, by the way his jaw clenched, he was clearly holding back. And so, albeit shakily, you nodded, and allowed Elvis to devour you in yet another suffocating kiss.
You truly didn't know why you agreed, exactly. Mind searching for reasons as Elvis groped and loved you ever so hungrily, you considered that maybe the only reason was because it was all that was expected of you. It only took moments for Steve to suspect such-- the press was bound to think the same thing. So, why not play the role like you were expected to?
The whole experience was all but a blurry memory from there as Elvis stripped you of your clothes and laid you bare, his body warming your own and the odd mix of pain and pleasure, mixing into one powerful feeling. And, despite Elvis's promise to help you relax, you couldn't help but feel as though he was the one truly benefitting from this as he helped himself to you as though you were some sort of possession-- as if he'd earned it.
And, although your memory was fogged, you could remember one moment when Elvis dragged your mess of a person into a standing position, his grip rough as he forced you in front of a mirror. It was as if you acted on instinct when your eyes snapped closed, not daring to stare at him or yourself. You simply couldn't.
"Open your eyes, little girl." Elvis's tone was dark as his breath fanned against your ear, his grip on your arm tightening ever so slightly; a warning.
And, against your every want, you obliged, eyes just barely cracking open before you let out an audible gasp upon seeing your shambled figure. Elvis's grin grew as you did, eyes resembling that of a snake as he stared at you in the mirror.
"Look at yourself. Tell me what you see."
And you did-- you took your time as your stared at you naked form staring back at you.
Well, if you could call it yours, anyway.
You didn't feel like yourself anymore. Your own body didn't feel like your own anymore. It was as if you-- your mind and soul-- were just along for whatever ride your own body was on.
Because you were. You were on whatever ride Elvis was bringing you on. Your own life was no longer your own, either. It was Elvis's.
It was all his.
You wanted to cry now, so, so much.
You understood why Elvis was asking you this.
Your lips quivered as you spoke your next words.
"You, Elvis." Your efforts to not cry were in vain. "I see you."
Elvis's lips curled up into a devilish smirk. "That's right."
You couldn't remember very much from then, could only really remember the moments after he'd finished and the wild grin on his face-- and you were almost sure that you saw something resembling red, devilish horns atop his head for a moment, but they were gone the moment you blinked.
You felt as though you were in some sort of daze afterwards, unable to truly comprehend anything spilling from Elvis's mouth as he presumably spoke to you.
"Y/n? Y/n!--" You did eventually return to reality, and Elvis let out an amused chuckle as you did so. His eyes briefly swept over your exposed figure. "Sorry, baby. I may have gone a bit too hard on ya'. Why don't you take the rest of the day off?"
Unsure how else to response, you nodded, before quickly backing away and searching for your clothing which had been discarded on the floor. You could feel Elvis's eyes on you as you did so, but you tried to pay no mind to them once you'd found all your pieces of clothing and undergarments and slowly put them on.
Once you'd successfully done so, you took a deep breath as you beelined for the door, quickly unlocking it before pausing, your arm just barely hovering over the handle.
You wanted to say something to Elvis-- anything-- to tell him that this was wrong, and that it couldn't happen again. And yet, you couldn't. Your mouth simply refused to move in order to form any coherent words.
Elvis seemed to notice your hesitancy as he sauntered over to you, breath fanning along your neck as he softly kissed your temple. Upon noticing your eyes close in what he perceived to be some form of enjoyment, a pleased hum rumbled from his chest.
You allowed your eyes to open after a couple of moments, wishing-- hoping-- that Elvis wouldn't be there when you opened them. And yet, there he was, standing impossibly close to you.
"I'll see you soon, baby, so don't worry about that." You wanted to laugh at his reassurance. "Plus, uh... I'm sure you'll have to redo my measurements real soon."
Your eyes widened at his last statement, and your face turned in his direction, fear evident on your face as your lips parted. Oh, how much you wish that you could have merely squeaked out one word-- one single word-- you couldn't describe.
Elvis seemed to have once again misread your emotions, as, in one swift moment, his lips were connected to yours again in a deep, chaste kiss, before he allowed you to leave.
And leave, you did, feet scurrying away from Elvis's dressing room in a panicked manner.
You were quick to slip your clothes off once more and hop in the shower the moment you reached your hotel room, as if that could wash off the events of the past hour. It had all happened so quickly-- you hadn't even thought-- truly thought-- of the weight of what you'd done.
Fuck, fuck, fuck!
It was the only thing you could think of as you sat down in your shower, your arms hugging your knees as to comfort yourself.
Don't cry, don't cry...
It wasn't even like anyone could see you-- and even if they could, you were in the shower. It wasn't like anyone would notice the extra water streaming down your face. It was more-so your pride which caused you to simply take a deep breath and suck it up.
You really hadn't thought this through, had you? You hadn't thought to use protection, to maybe pause and stop everything before it became all too much all too fast.
You could only let out a dry laugh at that thought. Too late for that now. You supposed that now all you could hope was that Elvis would let you go, having already taken what he needed from you. He's had a ton of flings, after all. Who's to say you weren't just another one?
Something buried deep, deep inside of you told you that wasn't the case. You didn't listen to it.
Instead, you merely turned the shower off and placed a towel over your nude form before slipping on some pyjamas and into your bed, hoping you'd soon forget the events of the day.

It was a late summer afternoon, and the sun had only just set. You and your friends had been saved from the sweltering heat of Memphis, though it was still quite warm inside your car. Luckily, the cool wind blowing through the window saved all of you from the stickiness of the heat.
You and your friend Laura let out peals of laughter at Cindy's joke. You couldn't quite remember what it was about-- but nights like these typically went in that fashion. No one quite remembered what had happened a mere five minutes ago, much too focused on the present.
Cindy, too, joined in the laughter, eyes scrunching up in delight as soft giggles left her cherry-red lips. She was much too focused on her own laughter to notice a deer attempting to cross the road.
Eyes slowly returning to the street, Cindy let out an audible gasp as she rapidly slammed down on the brakes, all while mindlessly turning the car away from the poor animal.
You all but shrieked as the car promptly lost balance and swerved off of the street. It all went so quickly-- one moment you were on the road, giggling like idiots along with your friends, and in seconds, your world was turned upside down-- literally.
For many moments, you just hung in some uncomfortable position, wavering between consciousness and unconsciousness. Eventually, though, you did move, slowly-- perhaps too slowly-- unbuckling your seatbelt. You let out a displeased groan as your head promptly made harsh contact with the car's ceiling.
You stayed in that position for a while, too, the heat blazing from some unknown source slowly drawing you into a deep sleep. You didn't want to move-- felt as if it would take much too much energy and effort
And then, after regaining your barrings and realizing the situation at hand-- because, after all, your life was at stake-- you frantically unbuckled Laura's seatbelt, and then Cindy's. Their heads, too, hit the car ceiling, hard.
"Laura? Cindy? We need to get out of here..." Your voice hardly exceeded a whisper, much too weak to make any more sound. A series of coughs followed your statement, and you closed your now burning eyes-- as if it would help the situation.
You roughly shook their bodies in a futile attempt to wake them up, but found that they didn't move in the slightest.
"Laura!? Cindy!? Please! Please, I can't--" Realizing the weight of the situation, your eyes started to water. You wouldn't be able to drag them out of the car with you, and it was already on fire. If they didn't drag themselves out, they'd surely die.
Frantically, you clawed at Laura's ashy skin. Sobs racked your body. They needed to wake up.
Your breathing was ragged as you attempted to then wake up Cindy, but the heat of the blazing fire was hurting your skin, causing you to give up on the idea.
"C'mon guys-- I can't bring you guys out-- we-- we need to go..." Another series of coughs followed your pleas, and, eyes widening, you realized why they weren't responding.
It felt as though your body moved on its own as you dragged yourself out of the car, despite your desperate wanting to get back in as soon as possible to let your friends out-- despite knowing that, if you did, you'd be just as dead as them.
In moments after barely exiting the car and dragging yourself just off the road, you all-so-suddenly collapsed, your body no longer able to support your own weight. It made sense, too; you were sure that almost every bone in your body was broken. And you were just so, so tired.
Because all you felt was the heat radiating off the car, and your now burnt skin, and your aching bones.
The heat radiating off the car, your burnt skin, your aching bones...
The heat radiating off the car, your burnt skin, your aching bones...
You soon fell unconscious.
You woke up in an unfamiliar place.
A hospital, you'd soon come to realize, buzzing with doctors and employees from just outside your room.
"She's awake!" You heard a voice yell, followed by the presumable entering of another person.
"Leave me to her. I'll call you if I need any assistance," a male voice spoke. You couldn't yet see him, your eyes having not fully opened to accommodate any new light.
"Ms. L/n, I'm going to have to ask you to open your eyes, if you would be so kind," the deep voice then gently coaxed. Nodding slowly, you allowed your eyelids to open, and you blinked harshly at the bright lights shining above you.
"I can turn down the lights if you'd like?"
Nodding slowly, your lips curved into the faintest of smiles as the man did as he said he would.
Once your eyes had successfully adjusted to the softer lighting, you took notice of the man standing before you-- most likely a doctor, by the way he was dressed. Coifed, sleek black hair hung atop his angular head, and a small smile was planted on his lips. He looked no older than his mid-twenties.
"It's glad to see you in the land of the living, Ms. L/n. We weren't quite sure you'd make it," the man lightly joked, a twinkle in his eyes. "I'm your medical professional, Dr. Presley, but I'd prefer you call me Elvis. You were involved in a car crash 'bout a week ago, if you recall-- we got a call from someone who found your body near the site of the crash."
His voice then grew solemn, sympathy lacing his next few words. "Unfortunately, you were the only survivor. The other two didn't make it. 'm very sorry."
Although your recollection of the incident had been only but a hazy memory when you woke up, it all came crashing back at you at the mention of your friends. Your eyes quickly watered up with tears as you stared at the sheets of your bed shamefully.
"Laura and Cindy..." you mumbled, the memory slowly but surely coming back to you. Your hands then gripped the sheets tightly, as though they were an anchor.
Once your mind had fully registered the memory, your eyes widened. Your hands gripped the sheets tighter. Your voice barely exceeded a whisper as you spoke, "I did it, didn't I?" Desperation and guilt laced your voice as you said those words ever so quietly. "I killed 'em. I left them there to die--"
Elvis was quick to notice your almost incoherent mumbling, and all the more so to put an end to it. "You didn't kill them, Ms. L/n."
Your eyes wandered to his own. You shook your head in disbelief. He couldn't be right. You saw them-- they were in there. They couldn't move. If only you'd just been less selfish and saved just one of them! "No, you're wrong. I was there-- I saw them. I could've saved them-- I could have--"
Elvis knelt down and clasped your hand in his own. "Ya' couldn't have done anything. We ran procedures on their bodies. Even if you'd managed to drag 'em out of that car, they would've already been dead. They suffered too much trauma to have been saved by any doctor. You yourself only narrowly escaped with your life. You're incredibly lucky you're still alive. Be proud of that, that's what I say."
It was odd, to think that someone you'd just met could cool your nerves in so few sentences-- and even though you still felt guilty, Elvis certainly made you feel much better about yourself. Though you supposed it must have been part of the job-- he was a doctor, after all. Still, it was sweet-- he seemed to care about someone he barely knew.
"Thank you," is all you said in response, allowing your appreciative smile to speak for you. You were still quite exhausted. Elvis returned your smile warmly, before standing back up and walking further from your bed.
"Your family's been waitin' outside of here for a while. Ya' fine if I let 'em in?" To this, you slowly nodded, and Elvis swiftly exited the room. A silence permeated through the air for lingering moments, before the door swung open.
In came your worried mother and father. Your mother quickly rushed over to your bed, though she hugged you gently. You let out a small chuckle-- the best you could do without hurting your ribcage-- before she pulled away and smiled brightly in your direction.
Your father, stoic as ever, merely smiled at you, though you could tell from the new creases near his eyebrows and forehead that he may have been even more worried than your mother.
And then in came your boyfriend, who maintained a polite distance from you, though you could tell that, if your parents weren't there, he'd be much closer.
"Oh, Y/n! Me and your Pa have been so worried!" Your mother exclaimed, grabbing onto your father's shoulder for support. "We've been here night and day, I tell ya', darlin'-- every procedure, we've been there! We've just been so worried. We're so glad you're safe..."
The confession didn't help with the ever-growing guilt in your heart, and yet, in spite of your own feelings, you smiled warmly at your parents.
"Oh, and of course, this young fella's been here whenever he could be." Your mother pointed to your boyfriend, and you felt your heart swell in your chest at the comment.
"But we're just so glad you're safe... we were so worried..."
The rest of the interaction with your parents went on something like that until they eventually let you have some alone time with your boyfriend.
"Hey, honey. How's a' going?" Caring as ever, he sat at the foot of your bed and placed one hand on your leg carefully, rubbing comforting circles with his thumb through the sheets.
"Well-- everything just kind of... hurts." You let out a faint chuckle as your boyfriend stared at you sympathetically.
"Okay, I guess, I just," your voice dropped to a whisper as you continued, "I guess I just feel guilty. For, you know." You didn't want to utter their names-- felt as though doing so would make everything more real. The grief was still heavy on your shoulders.
Laura and Cindy were your two closest friends, and now they were gone, and you were left to fight the grief on your own. You felt angry at them, in a strange way, but you could never really be angry with them. You felt like you lost a part of yourself upon hearing of their deaths, and it hurt you. Even if you couldn't have saved them, you still felt such a pang of intense guilt that ate away at your flesh.
Because all you could wonder was, what if I had saved them? What if I had convinced them not to go to that restaurant?
What if...?
What if...?
What if?
You hadn't even noticed you were crying until you felt strong yet gentle hands engulf your fragile figure in a soft hug, and you let out a soft sob into your boyfriend's shoulder as you leaned into it. "It's okay, honey. It's not your fault. I just wish I had been there too..."
Your family and your boyfriend, after much convincing on your part (as they needed to get back to their own lives and take care of themselves), did eventually leave, though not without promising to visit almost every day. Knowing you wouldn't be able to convince them otherwise, you nodded in defeat and offered each one of them a supportive smile as they left. You were sure your parents needed the sleep, anyway.
Life in the hospital was odd, but it was nice-- nicer than one would expect. Your doctor-- Elvis-- was kind and thoughtful, more-so than he needed to be, you liked to think. He'd often sit in your room during his lunch break and eat and chat with you, which you always appreciated greatly.
The both of you bonded over practically everything, and you found yourself growing quite fond of the man. Had circumstances not drawn the two of you together so late in your life, you would have openly admitted that, had you met him before, you would have most certainly been the closest of friends with him.
"I actually wanted to be a musician when I was younger."
After some gentle prodding into Elvis's passions, he finally told you about them.
"Oh yeah?" You titled your head, invested in his next response. "Why'd you become a doctor, then?"
To this, Elvis shrugged and sank into the seat beside you. "I tried my hand in the music industry, but I jus' don't think it was for me. My music wasn't half bad, but people didn't like the way I moved."
"The way you moved?"
"The way I danced-- I liked to wiggle my hips a little. The audience wasn't much of a fan. Figured I oughta get a safer job with better pay." He shrugged. "Here I am."
"So, what-- you just gave up on your dream?"
All but surprised by your comment, Elvis stared at you, eyes swimming with confusion. "Well, I gave it my best shot, it just didn't work out."
A mischievous expression twinkled in your eyes. "One try and then it's over? That sounds like giving up to me. How about this-- you sing me a song, and I'll tell ya' if I think it's good or not.
An awkward silence settled as Elvis made his decision. And then, slowly, he nodded, and closed his eyes, as if to think of something. You stared at him in wonder as he sang.
"And yes, I know how lonely life can be," his voice weak on the first few words, but quickly grew in strength.
"When shadows follow me, the night won't set me free," his voice sounded like honey, sweet and smooth as he sang every word.
"But I don't let the evening get me down, now that you're around me."
Upon his eyes reopening, you clapped, impressed thoroughly by his musical ability. "That was wonderful!" You praised earnestly. It surprised you that Elvis gave up on a dream like that-- with such a talented voice, it seemed like a waste.
Elvis merely stared back at you, a dazed expression on his face, before slowly smiling and accepting the praise. His voice was quiet as he muttered a quick thanks, before exiting and saying something about getting back to work.
It was early in the morning when you woke up and found a gift at the side of your bed, accompanied by a card with a stamp shaped like a heart. Curiously, you first read the card and found written into it:
I remembered you mentioning that you loved stuffed animals and the color blue, so I thought I'd get you this. Although it cannot express well enough just how much you have filled my heart as of late, I hope it can somehow relay the message.
With love, Yours Truly.
You then opened the gift to find a blue stuffed bear inside. Your heart warmed at the thought of your boyfriend leaving you such things-- let alone remembering such small details about you! Abashedly, you had to admit, you yourself weren't quite as good at retaining that kind of info, so it made you feel all the more special.
Later, when your boyfriend visited you that day, you thanked him for the gift, to which he confusedly explained to you that he did not, in fact, buy you a gift. You delicately changed the subject after that and managed to convince yourself that he must have simply forgotten.
And yet, you couldn't help but wonder how could he have simply forgotten something like that?
Regardless, you were thankful for the present and found your gaze lingering on it quite often.
It wasn't even a week that had passed by the time you got a second one.
You opened the envelope of the card to find-- not a card, but a letter, and in it, inscribed a heartfelt and meaningful poem. You couldn't help the smile that grew as you read it, and found yourself blushing at many of the comments written in it.
You then opened the present to find an opulent necklace, littered with the finest of diamonds. Now, this drew your attention. Of course, you knew your boyfriend's job had quite decent pay, but this must have been worth at least a few months of wages. And so, you had to wonder: how could he have gotten all that money?
You thanked him and asked him about it, and once again, he was as confused as ever, leaving you to predict that perhaps it was not he who had given you the presents. But then you had to wonder: if not him, then who?
Deciding to ask Elvis since he must have had some insight into the subject (after all, you doubted anyone was sneaking in and leaving you a present), during your shared lunch together, you inquired about the gifts. At the mention of them and your expressed lack of knowledge on exactly who was giving them to you and your initial belief of it being your boyfriend, Elvis grew quiet for a long, hard moment, before replying, "I really don't know."
Slowly nodding, confusion evident on your face, you allowed the topic to fizzle out into a different conversation with Elvis.
As weeks passed in the hospital you didn't receive any more gifts, though you had started getting into therapy for walking and using your limbs after so long, which you picked up relatively easily. Still, the nurses who specialized in the field ensured you were careful, not wanting to provoke your injuries whatsoever, which you supposed made sense.
After about a month or so passed, the nurses finally decided that you were ready to return to your home so that you could resume your daily life, to which you were more than glad. Other than bi-weekly checkups, you'd finally be free of the hospital that you'd been stuck in for ever so long.
"I'm gonna miss ya'," Elvis said, offering you a gentle hug. You rolled your eyes fondly as you accepted it, knowing full well he was being overdramatic.
"I'm still going to see you every week, Elvis. Twice."
Still, the goodbye left you feeling somewhat bitter, knowing you wouldn't be able to see Elvis daily from now on.
Life at home felt normal, in a sense. Of course, you weren't out and about quite as much as you'd been before the crash (and although you hated to think about it, it would make sense since your friends were gone), but it was nice to be able to live your life without the confines of a hospital.
Letting out a content sigh, you opened the door to your porch, keen on spending some time outside and getting some well-needed fresh air. That was, until you found a gift in front of the door.
Your brows laced together as you stared at the gift, and the letter on top of it, which so clearly resembled the ones you'd gotten at the hospital. You'd be a fool not to conclude that they were both from the same person.
Cautiously, you looked around you to see if anyone was watching-- because as paranoid as you may be, you were still getting love letters from an anonymous source who now apparently knew the location of your house-- before taking the present and card and slipping into your home, locking the door behind you.
Firstly opening the letter, you found another quite beautifully written love letter (this much, you had to admit), though what concerned you was what was written on the bottom.
To my dearest Y/n,
I know you love candies, I've seen you at that small bakery just down the street from your house, so I truly hope you enjoy this gift. I got it just for you.
You know, I find it quite odd how you wander around those stores and buy so little baked goods, but I suppose that's my purpose, and I in no way oppose that duty. I simply hope that someday we'll be able to go together, just so that I can make sure I buy your favorites.
With love, Yours Truly.
At the mention of the bakery you frequented, your stomach twisted with unease; you'd only gone there less than a day ago.
Once you opened the present, your heart only sank deeper into your stomach. Inside was a box of heart-shaped chocolates from said bakery-- a warm gesture, had you known who it was from at the very least.
But that was just it. You didn't. Whoever was sending you these knew both where you lived and where you went, which only unnerved you all the more.
A loud knock at your door quickly startled you out of your thoughts, and you quickly hid the chocolates and wrappers upon hearing your parents beckon for you. You'd forgotten that they said they were coming over.
The rest of the evening went by relatively calmly, your mind buzzing with worried thoughts and your parents cooling your nerves. Dinner was all but one of the best ones that you had, though you couldn't deny the sinking feeling in your stomach that grew upon saying goodbye to your parents.
Of course, you knew they'd drop everything and anything in the blink of an eye to stay with you had you asked, but you couldn't find it in your heart to ask them to do so-- they'd already given up so much for you.
And so, once they left, you quickly closed your door and locked it, and ensured all the windows to your home were locked, too. You didn't need any other things to keep you awake at night.
And yet, in spite of your trust in the blinds that covered your widows and the locks that sealed your doors, you simply felt exposed. And, sure, it was dramatic, but you simply couldn't shake off the feeling of being watched as your head hit the pillow and as you were slowly lulled into a deep sleep.
Despite your recent unease, life carried on as it always did. You had checkups with Elvis twice every week, your boyfriend would be over at your house constantly, making you dinner and such, and your parents would insist on visiting you nearly every day.
And yet, the ongoing buzz of the passing days was not enough to quell your buzzing mind and your thoughts of more pressing and recent matters.
The death of your friends was still something you felt the burden of, and regardless of the irrationality of the whole ordeal, you felt as though it was somehow your fault that they weren't still alive, living and breathing.
You also couldn't take your mind off the gifts you'd been getting, and the letters that were growing increasingly personal. They'd mention places that you'd been to mere days before and mentioned things about your past that not many were heavily informed on.
There were some nights when you'd go out and would find things like dresses and purses which you had all but glanced at the stores, and after about ten seconds of deciding whether or not you desired them to be your own, deemed them too expensive, but then later found them at your doorstep. Those types of gifts unnerved you incredibly, especially since they'd sometimes appear on your doorstep before you even came home.
There were also times that, after hanging out with your boyfriend or someone you'd met recently, the letters would lightly suggest that you stopped spending time with them, and would often go into detail as to why. And, although you didn't often listen to them, you certainly considered it.
You'd also considered calling the police about the issue several times, but what would you say? Hey, someone's been leaving me an excessive amount of presents in the past weeks. I don't know who they're from, so could you please track them down and tell them to stop? The question simply seemed preposterous.
And so, with a heavy heart, you kept it all to yourself-- only went so far as to suggest that your boyfriend stay the night with you so that you'd feel safer. Of course, you'd never tell him the real reason, only spun harmless white lies that you didn't quite need, anyway, as he was always willing to drop anything for you.
It was about an hour before noon when you went to get your presumably last checkup, and you were overjoyed. you'd finally be able to completely return to your normal life-- almost. Of course, you couldn't forget what you lost in that crash, but you were glad at the prospect of no longer having to visit the hospital, a place that constantly reminded you of your losses.
Walking into your designated room, Elvis turned around and smiled in your direction, and gestured for you to come closer. You obliged, and Elvis walked towards you and began running the normal procedures.
"You sure seem happy today," he remarked, to which you smiled wider.
"Yeah, I'd say so."
"It isn't because you're glad of gettin' rid of me, is it?"
As the question, a small giggle erupted from your lips as you shook your head.
More witty banter ensued as Elvis did your checkup, and you appreciated it-- his seemingly natural ability to make you forget your circumstances and to simply focus on the moment.
Once you were just about finished with your checkup, Elvis shot you a grin and a thumbs up that seemed to indicate for your departure, but none was such the case. Just as you waved goodbye and spun on your heel in an effort to leave, Elvis spoke, his voice quieter than usual.
“Hey, Y/n, I was actually been meaning to ask you something before ya’ left.”
Turning around at the statement you were all but taken aback at Elvis’s seemingly nervous demeanor. He’d never been anything short of confident since you’d met him, so you were curious as to what he was going to say.
“Shoot.”
Elvis cleared his throat before he spoke. “What do you think about… getting dinner sometime? With me?” He paused, cleared his throat. “A date.”
The question rendered you speechless for quite some time. Ever since you’d met Elvis, you’d assumed that he was married– if not already settled down with some children. After all, why wouldn’t he be? He was charming, kind, and you had to admit that he was easy on the eyes.
“Oh, um, Elvis, that’d be wonderful, but…” You shifted awkwardly in your place. You never liked delivering bad news. “I’m– I’m sorry, but I have a boyfriend.”
At the rejection, Elvis’s eyes flashed with an emotion that you couldn’t recognize and he opened his mouth as if to speak before it quickly snapped closed. Solemnly, he nodded and gestured to the exit.
You didn’t like saying goodbye to someone with such bitterness, but you knew no amount of solace or apologies would mend the situation. Truth be told, you had never expected Elvis to develop romantic feelings for you, and you felt utterly despicable for rejecting him after everything he'd done for you, but you knew it had to be done. You had a boyfriend, whom you adored, and you wouldn’t have had it any other way.
Unfortunately, you later found that that wasn’t your decision to make.
A single letter was left on your doorstep the following morning.
There was no gift in sight, which both calmed your nerves while simultaneously sending them into an erratic frenzy.
You'd grown used to seeing the letters attached to some paper-wrapped box, but never had you seen one, alone on your doorstep.
You'd never noticed how dark the red of the heart-shaped stamp was, not until today. Or maybe it just wasn't that color until today. You didn't know, but you did have to admit that it did resemble the color of blood.
You shook your head at the thought of the ominous detail, successfully scattering your thoughts. You were merely overreacting.
And yet, your heart pounded fiercer than ever as you brought the letter over to your table. You were much too preoccupied with examining it to remember to lock your front door.
Slowly, fearfully, you opened the letter, sliding it out and taking a deep breath before reading it. Your breath caught in your throat as you did so.
Y/n,
I am truly very disappointed that you denied my proposal! I love you, as I am sure you must know by now, and it breaks my heart to see you choose him over me.
I realize now that I must take control of the situation. I had initially expected for things to go smoothly, but I suppose nothing goes quite as planned.
I'll see you soon.
With Love, Yours Truly.
You felt sick to your stomach. The letter slipped out of your hand, and you let it. Slowly walking backward, you recounted your interactions with Elvis.
But how could it have been him? He seemed so nice, and he seemed so respectful, too. And yet, looking back on it, it all made sense. From how he got your address to the fact that the gifts temporarily stopped when you brought the subject up to him--
You bumped into something warm.
You froze for a moment before you tried to quickly move away from it. Your attempt was futile, however, as the figure, much faster than you, wrapped one arm around your torso and the other rested firmly on top of your mouth, successfully pulling you impossibly closer to him.
You tried to let out some kind of scream-- a sound-- anything to alert someone that you were in danger-- but your voice was muffled by the figure's hand.
"Now, darlin', do you really think anyone's gonn' hear you?" Elvis's voice was deep as he whispered those words into your ear, the warmth from his breath sending a shiver down your spine. It sounded almost as though he was scolding you.
Your attempts to scream came to a halt and you felt a satisfied hum rumble from Elvis's chest. "Good girl."
To say that you were shaking would have been an understatement. You were trembling, your breathing ragged as your hands quivered. You were unable to do so much as to lean away from the man who held you ever so firmly in his grasp.
There was silence, for a long moment-- a silence that you did not dare to break.
"Y'know, Y/n, things could have gone by so much easier if you'd just gone out with me," Elvis then said, one of his hands idly toying with your clothing and brushing over your skin. You didn't even bother trying to pull away-- you knew you wouldn't be strong enough. "But now-- look what ya've done! You messed this entire thing up. This entire thing."
His hand traveled lower along your body, slowly, almost imperceptibly.
"I liked this dynamic-- doctor and patient? Would've liked to have kept that up."
Both of Elvis's arms then detached from your body, and he walked in front of your figure. He cupped your cheek and rubbed what would have been soothing circles along your skin, had the current circumstance been different.
"Oh baby, why'd you have to go choosin' that son of a bitch of a boyfriend of yours over me? Don't you know how much I've invested in ya'?" Elvis let out a scoff. "Probably more than he's made in a lifetime."
You didn't respond-- felt as if he didn't specifically want you to. Elvis paused, his anger slowly fizzling into an almost pleased sort of emotion.
"But it's fine. I took care of him, so you won't have to worry about him getting in our way. You hear that? He won't bother you no more."
At his statement, your eyes grew wide, having an idea of his implications. At your reaction, Elvis seemed to grin even wider-- as if your fear offered him even more pleasure.
"You look so pretty like that..." He then muttered mindlessly, his eyes slowly wandering to your lips. He brought his hand over to them and brushed his thumb over them. He smiled slyly, his eyes resembling that of a serpent.
And then, slowly, tenderly, he kissed you, and you let him-- kissed him back, even. It wasn't like you had much of a choice, so you gave in-- drank his invigoratingly sweet poison. You allowed Elvis's hands and tongue to roam your body as he did so before he deepened the kiss-- turned it into something hungry and desperate.
At that point, you tried to push him away, tried to stop this from becoming all too much all too soon, tried to gain some distance from him-- but his grip on your body suddenly grew firm to the point where you were sure you were going to get bruises by the way his fingers dug into your skin, and he bit down on your lip, hard, as if to scold you.
And then, after what felt like an eternity, he finally pulled away, but lingered inches away from your face. Unease crept up your spine as he stared at you, passionately, intensely, before saying, "Grab your things."
You didn't know what to say before Elvis pointed to your bedroom. You then simply nodded and ran upstairs. To both your surprise and delight, Elvis didn't follow. And so, heart palpitating in your chest, you walked up to your bedroom and closed the door as silently as you could before locking it.
You had to get out.
You quickly searched your bedroom for a phone of some kind-- anything to contact the police or the outside world and to alert them that you needed help-- but found that it was nowhere to be seen.
Your stomach sank. I need to get out of here.
Loud, heavy footsteps hit your ears as you searched for some different way out. They were slow, but calculated, and took their time between each step.
It was then that you realized: he was baiting you.
Still, you wouldn't let your moment go to waste. Your eyes flitted to your bedroom window.
Bingo.
You rushed over to it and unlocked it, before trying to pry it open. And yet, despite your efforts, it wouldn't budge. You pushed and pushed and yet it remained firm in place, strong as ever.
Oh god, you couldn't breathe. Why on Earth wouldn't it move-- the one time you needed it to open? You weren't oblivious to the footsteps coming closer as you tried to do anything to make the goddamn window open. You didn't care if you needed to break some bones on the way out-- you just needed to get the fuck out of here.
"Y/n?" Elvis's voice beckoned for you as he approached, like a predator teasing its prey. "You almost done in there?"
You didn't speak-- you couldn't speak. You were so close-- so close-- to being able to leave, to calling the cops, anything. And yet, it seemed as if the universe found it entertaining to taunt you with the impossible.
The footsteps were suddenly put to a halt, and Elvis knocked on the door. "You still in there?" His voice was calm, peaceful, in a way. It lacked any sense of urgency or worry.
It was then that you realized: you weren't getting out. You didn't know how, but you did know that, somehow, Elvis planned this-- after all, why would he be so calm in this situation?
Elvis tried to open the door, but the lock stopped him from doing so (one thing that actually worked in your household). You could hear him let out a small, quiet chuckle before he spoke, amusement prominent in his voice.
"Y/n, the window's locked."
At that simple statement, you froze. Your hands shook as you ceased all movements and just stood there in shock. How did he know? How could he see you?
Elvis knocked on the door once more which-- you had to admit, you almost found funny, because why would he offer you the courtesy of opening the door to your own bedroom and not the door to your own goddamn house?-- before saying, "Baby, would ya' mind lettin' me in?"
Maybe, if you could move, for fear you would have, but you couldn't. You only stared at the door in terror, unease settling uncomfortably in your stomach. You wanted oh-so desperately to move, to speak, anything, but you were paralyzed, trapped inside your own body and your own mind.
"Oh Y/n, c'mon now. I know you can open this door, and there's no way outta' that room." Your body finally released you from its firm grip of paralysis at that statement, and you were able to move once more.
And then, finally, you opened your mouth to speak. "Elvis...? Why are you here?"
Your voice was shaky, but the words managed to get through eventually. The fear was evident in your voice as you spoke. You stared at the door, afraid of what his answer might be.
"Baby, all I want is to take care of ya'. Isn't that all you've wanted? Someone to take care of you and to make you feel safe?" His tone was sincere, and you found yourself almost falling for his deception. And yet, you were no fool-- you were now aware of the duplicitous man he was.
Elvis let out a small, light-hearted laugh before continuing. "Now, why don't you open the door and let me in? There's nowhere else you can go." The ending sounded more like a threat than a reassurance. Still, you didn't open the door-- only hoped that by some miracle the moment would end.
This, as it turns out, was a large mistake.
Elvis's tone turned from soft to infuriated in a matter of seconds as he banged loudly on the door. "Y/n, you better open this goddamn door right now." You let out a small, panicked sound at the harshness of his voice as you curled up in a ball and closed your eyes, as if that could somehow make you feel safer or make him leave.
You didn't listen to what he said next, only heard the loudness of his words that banged against your skull. And then, the loud slamming of a door opening. You let out a pained cry as you felt rough hands pull your hair in their direction.
"You just can't make this goddamn easy, can you?!" A loud voice screamed into your ear. "I've given you do goddamn many chances, but you just think you're so high and above them! Is that it?!"
Elvis tugged harshly on your hair at your lack of response. "Answer me, goddamnit!" But you couldn't-- could only let out a muffled whimper as he did so. He then paused, chest heaving for breath, and let go of you, slowly.
Elvis sat down beside you and placed one hand on your cheek, lovingly, sweetly, as if the moments just minutes prior hadn't occurred. "You look so pretty when you cry..." He muttered, guiding your face to look in his direction. "But you have to do what I say when I tell you. You got that, baby? Whatever I say, every time-- or I'm gonna have to go out and hurt some people, and neither of us wants that, do we?"
Head slowly shaking side to side, you agreed. Elvis smiled. "Good girl. Now, I didn't want to have to do this, but seeing as you've misbehaved so much, I'm afraid have to." Staring at Elvis fearfully, he offered you a sympathetic glance. "Don't worry, it won't hurt for long."
It was then that you felt a stinging pain in your neck. Unsure as you what exactly was happening, you attempted to pull away, but Elvis's grip grew tighter as he held you in place. Despite knowing that your efforts would be in vain, you thrashed against him, but he only held you closer, fingers digging deeper into your skin as you did so.
And then, slowly, you felt a certain exhaustion run through you as you eventually leaned right into Elvis's arms and were lulled into a deep sleep.

Pleasure was never something that was perfectly pure.
"Tell me what you want, and I'll give it to you. I'll give you everything."
You shivered at cool metal brushing against your bare skin, slender fingers gliding along your vulnerable body ever so delicately.
"I want you, Elvis. Only you."
You could practically see his smile grow as you felt his fangs penetrate your sensitive neck, teeth barely piercing your skin. He was teasing you.
"Well, I'm right here, baby," he muttered, before allowing his sharp fangs to break through your skin. Deep inside of you, they went, and you let out a groan as Elvis's free arms roamed your body, heating your body impossibly more.
Pain, as you'd come to learn through so many late nights, was very similar to pleasure. It was almost sweet, yet so desperate, and you found yourself enjoying it-- enjoying the pleasure and pain mixed into one hazy blur. You enjoyed the feeling of Elvis sucking your own life force out of you.
You savored the feeling of Elvis's tongue, wet against your neck, greedily taking what he could from you-- savored the feeling of his teeth gently biting your lower lip, just enough to draw some blood. And then, after some time that felt much too soon, Elvis must have decided that it'd been enough, and you let out a displeased groan as he did so.
"Oh, c'mon on now," he coaxed, crawling off of you and choosing to lay beside your figure. A tangle of legs, you smiled as Elvis moved impossibly closer to you, eyes focused intensely on your facial features. "Can't bleed you dry all in one night. I love ya' too much for that."
At the last comment, you smiled widely, and Elvis did the same as he devoured you in a hungry kiss. You could still taste your blood on his tongue as he did so, the taste salty and metallic on your own. You completely and utterly adored it.
It was nights like these that you truly loved, you and Elvis, alone with no other distractions. It was because of nights like that that you forgot about his numerous crimes. And it was because of nights like these that you felt oh, so guilty.
Because, no matter how many times you tried to forget about the deaths, to forget about the bodies, to forget all of it, you couldn't. You couldn't simply let something like that go.
You tensed in front of Elvis, who, after noticing your resistance towards his affection, albeit reluctantly, pulled away.
"Baby?" he questioned softly, a perfectly confused expression present on his features. His hand traveled up to cup your cheek at your lack of response.
"Y/n, darlin', is anything wrong?"
You wished that you didn't reply at all, wished that you had merely shaken your head and let him continue, wished you would have simply indulged more of his intoxicating poison. But you didn't, simply muttered something about needing to go to the bathroom as you slipped out of the sheets and over to said room.
You closed the door and locked it behind you, knowing your heart was now beating much faster than it was before-- knowing that he could hear it, could hear the blood rushing through your veins and your ragged breath and your quiet coughs.
But that didn't matter. Not now. You needed a moment to breathe.
From outside the room, a deep voice beckoned for you. You knew he knew. This always happened. But you couldn't help it. You couldn't simply let it go.
You'd convinced yourself that Elvis loved you, a while back. Convinced yourself that everything he did-- all the bad and the good-- it was all for you. It was to make you happy.
But, staring at your unnaturally light skin tone and fragile figure, you knew that wasn't the case. You knew those had only been ideas that Elvis had implanted in your mind.
Elvis was always so good at that, you'd learned over the years. He could fabricate such sweet, blissful lies that would make you give anything for them to be true.
And, with help from Elvis, they were.
But you knew that this delusion of his-- the delusion that you'd learned to accept eagerly-- was crumbling. A delusion of affection and serenity. A delusion of love.
But infatuation was something very different to love, and so was obsession. This was something that most could understand conceptually, but could not grasp in the real world. Treating someone as if you possessed them-- as if they were some prized artifact that had to be isolated from the outside world-- was not love.
Elvis beckoned for you once more, this time with a more stern tone. An uneasy feeling slithered down your spine-- a venomous snake, waiting for its moment to attack.
You didn't reply-- you should have, but you didn't. You merely stared at the ghost of your reflection in the mirror, all but disappointed. You had to wonder, how could things have gotten this bad? How could circumstances have gotten so bad that you couldn't tell the difference between love and his own infatuation with you?
A knock was heard on the door. You froze. You wouldn't reply. You couldn't reply.
"Y/n, darlin'," Elvis's tone was dark; a warning. And yet, you stood paralyzed by fear, frozen by the simple idea of what he'd done to get you where you are right now.
"I'm gonn' have to open this door if you don't let me in."
You wished that you could simply move your body to unlock the door, but your limbs refused to move.
"I'm gonna count to three," his voice was threatening. You knew he was mad. You knew he would be even madder if you didn't open that goddamn door, but you were frozen in your fear. You were completely utterly terrified of Elvis-- of the man he truly was.
"1..." One. You remembered the first time you'd met Elvis-- so handsome and charming, he could have fooled anyone with just a smile.
"2..." Two. That was the time it happened. 2 in the morning. He didn't expect you to be awake, or even at your home. You'd told him that you'd be out for the next couple of nights, anyway.
"3..." Three. The number of dead bodies sprawled on the floor that very night, bodies that he'd killed. You couldn't speak or move when it happened, could only watch as he drained the life out of your own family-- your own flesh and blood.
It all felt so surreal, now-- it felt as though you were reliving the moment in its entirety.
Your limbs finally moved when the door was busted open, but not in the way you wanted them to. They buckled underneath your own weight, no longer able to support your fragile figure.
You would have been lying to yourself if you didn't say that it was all his fault-- your current condition.
In came a furious-looking Elvis who, after noticing your shaking figure on the bathroom floor, allowed his expression to soften. He knelt down in front of you, wiping tears off of your face that you hadn't even realized you had shed.
"Oh, Y/n..." he muttered, guilt heavy on his chest. He didn't want to see you like this-- he hated it. He only wanted to keep you safe.
"You..." The accusatory words refused to leave your mouth, and as you tried to pull away from Elvis-- to create some distance between the two of you, his grip on your face suddenly grew firm. You let out a soft whimper as he brought your face closer to his own. You'd never wanted things to end up like this.
"Why don't we go back to bed, hon'?" Elvis's grip was brought from your chin to your arm as he softly tugged it.
You didn't know what had overcome you in that moment-- perhaps fear, perhaps rage, or maybe it was simply a sadness so incredibly intense that you couldn't stop it-- but at the suggestion, your eyes widened and you jerked your arm away from Elvis, backing yourself against the bathroom wall as you screamed in protest.
Because you were scared of him. Because you were angry at him. Because you knew that he wasn't the soft man that he portrayed himself to be.
Elvis's normally electric blue eyes became dark and stormy as he approached you-- a quivering mess on the floor, hardly able to breath as tears blurred your vision.
You knew the weight of what you'd done. You knew what was to come next.
You snapped your eyes closed, and in moments, a hand was felt across your cheek, with a stinging pain to follow. Another sob escaped your lips as you hugged your bare figure tightly.
"El-Elvis-- P-Please..." You managed to stammer out the plea after a pathetic amount of time, your sobs prohibiting you from muttering any coherent words.
At the mention of his name, Elvis just stared at you, blankly.
He wanted an apology.
"I-- I'm..." Your breathing was shaky and your voice fluctuated in tone as you spoke. It didn't help that your body was all but trembling. "I'm-- s-sorry."
You didn't look up-- you didn't need to in order to know that Elvis was smiling.
"Good girl," he praised, bending down and gently picking up your frail form. You wanted to smile as he kissed your temple ever so delicately, but found that you lacked the strength to even curve your lips into the slightest of smiles.
"Now, how about you relax and let me make it up to you, hmm?" He whispered into your ear, and you nodded, giving him permission to lay you back on the bed and to forget your troubles once more.

. summary / request : you're a pretty small and local fashion designer, so you are both thrilled and nervous when you get a call from a long-time friend of yours, steve, who tells you that he's got a job for you in vegas for no other than elvis presley. when the two of you meet, sparks fly, but you can't help but notice a more sinister underlining to your friendly relationship as time goes on.

It came to you as quite a relief how Elvis didn't mention anything about the previous day to you the next time you spoke, and the time after that, and the time after that. You were initially terrified at the prospect of the topic being used as the subject of a conversation, or for it to somehow be mentioned, but it never was. You were even beginning to question if what happened was a figment of your imagination-- if you were simply stretching the memory in your own mind to appear as if it were more surprising than it was when it really happened.
Regardless, you did your best to distract yourself from the topic as you finished working on Elvis's leather suit. You were almost embarrassed to admit that you'd only indeed be comfortable once you were able to leave the show once it was finished and join Steve and his crew, but it was true. As much as you appreciated Elvis's company, you would be lying if you didn't say that you considered it possible that what happened that day couldn't happen once more.
Your mind wandered to Steve. You and him, much to your pleasure, had been getting closer over the past couple of weeks. You spoke to him daily, and never forgot every subtle flirty comment he made or every time his skin would brush against your own. Your stomach would erupt with butterflies each and every single time it happened.
Mind delved deep into your work, you didn't notice when the door opened and a man entered. "Looking good, Y/n," a voice commented, and you turned around to face no other than the man you had only just recently been thinking about.
"Do you mean the suit or me?" You questioned boldly, eliciting a small chuckle from Steve. "Both, I suppose," he replied, causing the room to erupt in light-hearted peals of laughter.
"Well, thank you, I suppose," you said once it had quieted down.
"Always."
There was a moment of silence, and you and Steve just stared at each other, each equally engrossed by the other.
"You know, Y/n, I've been meaning to ask you," Steve walked up closer to you and lingered mere feet away. "I was thinking you could end your shift a little early and come have some dinner with me."
You were surprised, to say the least. Although you knew this day was bound to come, you didn't expect him to ask so soon. Still, you were pleased by the question and nodded your head eagerly. "That would be wonderful, Steve."
Steve grinned to himself, satisfied. "I'll come by your office at 4," he said and was gone within the second.
Now even more pleased with yourself than initially, you smiled, unable to hide your rapture as you continued your work.
To say the very least, you couldn't wait for 4 o'clock.
It was nearing 12pm once you'd finished Elvis's leather suit, and you were proud to say that it came out perfectly.
You allowed yourself to take a short lunch break before working on some other less important costumes, and let out a content sigh as you took a bite out of the lunch that you'd packed, glad that everything seemed to be workout out for you at the moment.
"Someone's lookin' mighty pleased with themselves," a husky voice behind you spoke, and even though you tried to restrain it, you simply couldn't help the smile that tugged at the corner of your lips. You'd tried to remain more cautious around Elvis recently, but you couldn't help yourself today.
"I finished your suit," you explained, causing Elvis to quirk an eyebrow as he took a seat in front of you. "Well, can't wait to try it on," he spoke.
At your lack of response to his comment, Elvis tilted his head in curiosity. He observed your perfectly unbridled smile. "You sure there isn't anything else?" He then asked, surprising you. You quickly--perhaps too quickly-- shook your head and allowed your smile to drop.
"Oh, c'mon Y/n," he coaxed, "There has to be somethin' else."
To this, you merely shook your head and averted Elvis's gaze in a feeble attempt to put an end to the conversation. "There isn't."
"Don't lie to me."
You were surprised by the sudden outburst and stared bewildered at Elvis whose expression was angry and determined.
"I- uh--" Fearful due to his change of demeanor, you stammered out whatever you could. "Um, someone asked me out."
Elvis's normally bright blue eyes were now dark and stormy, and his expression caused a shiver to run down your spine. "Who?"
"Steve," you squeaked out the response before you could stop yourself.
Elvis seemed to pause after this, and his attitude suddenly shifted once more. He feigned a smile and offered you a curt nod, "Well, 'm glad to see you so happy," before a silence arose between the two of you.
It unnerved you, truly, how quickly he was able to change his demeanor. Still, you plastered on an albeit shaky smile, afraid that, if you'd do anything else, you might provoke him in some way. "Yeah, I am..." you averted his gaze once more, a certain uneasiness making its way through your body.
"So, are ya' gonna show it to me?" Elvis's previously cool composure was all but forgotten, replaced by a talkative, cheerful one.
You stared at him incredulously, "What?"
Elvis stared back at you, a certain confusion swimming in his eyes. It was as if you were the crazy one in this situation. "The leather suit? You gonna lemme take a look at it?"
Elvis's tone was sincere, and in mere moments, you began to doubt that he even had an outburst-- even the most convincing of actors couldn't pull off something like that.
"Oh, um," your movements were strained as you moved to get up, and all the more so when Elvis followed you. You opened the door to your closet, the normally spacious room rendering you suffocated with him sauntering behind you. "It's here."
Elvis brushed past you as he walked over to the leather suit, his eyes twinkling with admiration. "Wow..." he trailed off as he glided his fingers over the black fabric.
"This is..." he turned back to face you. A smile painted his features. "This is wonderful, darlin'."
You felt your throat go dry at the pet name, and yet you smiled all the same. I'm sure he calls plenty of people that. Must just be a force of habit. You didn't even bother mentioning it, nor did you bother thanking him for his compliment, instead opting for a brisk nod.
And still, much to your dismay, there it was. That same intimate gaze directed at nobody but you, proving your efforts to cause disinterest to spark in Elvis to be futile. You felt so small as he stared at you, raking your body like you were some piece of artwork.
Contrary to the last time, however, you weren't going to let Elvis take advantage of your surprise. "I'm sorry to cut this short, but I think I'll have to be getting back to work," you stated, averting Elvis's intense gaze, though not missing the fact that he was practically boring holes into the back of your head once you did.
"'Course. My bad." Is all he replied, his icy demeanor from moments before returning. You crossed your arms in front of your chest as if to protect yourself, and you watched Elvis exit the room, albeit quite slowly. You let out a breath of relief once he finally did.
"Fuck," you muttered to yourself, taking a seat at your table as you idly toyed with your food. You didn't want to eat anymore-- felt as if the short-lived moment with Elvis had taken away your appetite. "I'm going to be glad when I'm able to leave this place." And it was true. Your ever-growing feeling of discomfort never seemed to cease, and you were glad to know that you'd be across the country soon.
To say that you were nervous for the moment Steve was bound to walk into your office was an understatement, but there weren't any words strong enough in the English dictionary to quite explain your excitement mixed with your high anxiety levels. Your leg bounced up and down in a manic way as you stared at the door, eyes hawkish and incredibly focused.
When an all but silent creaking reached your ears, you shot up and were pleased to find that Steve was there, perfectly on time as he always was. "I was beginning to think you wouldn't show," you joked, a mischievous twinkle in your eye in spite of your nervousness. Steve smiled, "I considered it..." you tapped him playfully yet on his shoulder, feigning the expression of hurt on your face. "But then, figured, hey! Why miss a date with such a pretty girl?"
Butterflies erupted in your stomach at the comment. Steve grinned as he shook his head and linked your arm with his own, guiding you to his car and opening the door for you.
"Such a gentleman," you muttered to yourself as you took a seat.
"I'd like to think of myself as such." You smiled. You loved this, loved seeing the cheeky side of Steve, loved your playful banter.
The drive there was only filled with more witty banter, and peals of laughter echoed throughout the inside of the car until you exited it.
"You cannot be telling me that you've liked me all these years," you said, baffled by Steve's recent confession. He simply shrugged and nodded in response. "I was too scared to ask you out when I was younger. Didn't think you liked me, so I never mustered the courage to ask you on a date."
To this, you shook your head in disbelief and let out an airy chuckle. "Well, I liked you back then too, and I sure like you a lot now." It seemed almost instinctual to lean up against Steve, and it felt right when he kissed you ever so tenderly, hands cupping your cheeks in such a gentle manner that it made you smile. Kissing him felt like finally connecting that last puzzle piece and creating the perfect picture-- it simply felt right and needed. And by the way your lips meld together, you decided that it was safe to say that he was the one for you, your person. And you were as much his as he was yours.
In the shadows, a man stood, ever so quietly, unperceived by even the most prying of eyes.
His gaze rested intently on the embrace of two figures, and he took note of it, before slipping further into the shadows as if he were never there.
Steve grinned once the two of you pulled apart. "I've been wanting to do that for a long time," he whispered into your ear, before taking your hand in his softly and leading you into the restaurant.
Steve didn't hold back on any sarcastic comments, nor did he brush over any compliments that make your heart swell. Although heads turned at the loud laughter emitting from your table in the quiet restaurant you were in, neither of you truly cared, too focused on the conversations at hand.
Neither you nor Steve took any notice of how late it was until Steve briefly glanced at his watch, and you observed curiously as his eyes grew wide. He quickly ushered the both of you out of the restaurant after paying the bill, before explaining to you how it was incredibly late and he knew that you'd have to get up early the next morning. To this, you merely shrugged, accustomed to getting minimal amounts of sleep.
He dropped you off at the hotel and gave you a sweet, slow kiss before driving off to who-knows-where.
You quickly walked into your bedroom and collapsed on your bed the moment you got your pajamas on, much too tired to think about anything else and blissfully unaware of the pair of eyes carefully watching your figure.
Things only seemed to get better from that day.
Though the relationship remained mostly secret from everyone else, you didn't mind it, not in the slightest. You found it exhilarating, the idea of keeping something so seemingly important from anyone but you and Steve. It made everything all the more intimate, too.
There was one day, however, that you would have not considered part of the all-time high that was now your life.
You stared, shock overtaking your actions as the TV continued to play, declaring that the president was dead. Everyone was frozen in the room, scared to utter a single word. Even Elvis, one of the most talkative people you knew, was silent, staring blankly in front of himself.
"Steve," a man then whispered, staring at the said man with a sullen expression. "We gotta get back to work."
"Work?" Steve's eyes remained glued on the TV, before he carefully walked forward and turned down the volume. You could sense the conflict that was running through him.
"Listen, I, uh..." he started, eyes now stuck on the floor. "I just wanna say that-- that this nation is hurting. It's lost, you know it... It needs a voice right now to help it heal." His eyes flitted from the floor directly to Elvis. His gaze was intense, determined. "We have to say something. You have to make a statement, E.P."
You'd never really seen the Colonel before, never understood why everyone really hated him besides the fact that he took such a large portion of Elvis's paycheck. It only took moments for you to finally understand. An old man, most likely having eavesdropped on the conversation, walked inside.
"Mr. Presley does not make statements," he spoke incredulously. Everyone turned towards him as he let out a humorless laugh. "He sings 'Here Comes Santa Claus' and wishes everyone 'Merry Christmas and goodnight'." The television was off in seconds.
You tried not to allow your anger to surface as he shot a gaze at each and every one of you before leaving, tried not to yell at him or punch him, simply clenched your jaw and narrowed your eyes when his gaze landed on you for fleeting moments.
You were never quite sure if Elvis did make a statement after that day, you didn't want to bother checking only to be disappointed and find that he didn't. And so, after the Colonel left, you too slipped away, later joined by Steve in a comforting embrace.
It felt like a lie to say that it was the last day you'd be working for Elvis, but you were glad. You could hardly keep the grin off of your face all day, that is, until the man himself approached you.
"Y/n," you hadn't even noticed the man enter the room-- much less did you notice his proximity to you, and it caused uneasiness to run down your spine. You all but whirled around, eyes wide in fear to stare at the man. He didn't seem to notice the fright in your eyes-- eagerly mistaking it for surprise.
A wobbly smile took its place on your face. "Mr. Presley," you greeted. You never did like being alone with him.
"How've you been? Haven't seen much of 'ya recently."
That was the point, you wanted to reply, but you were too afraid to do so. "Good, really good, actually." It was an earnest response, but you didn't provide him the details.
"Good," he smiled, "good." He allowed silence to follow before he continued.
"Then I suppose you wouldn't mind me asking you if ya' wanted to come work for me?"
You all but gaped at the sudden question. Work for him? Was he out of his goddamn mind? Working for him for the past couple of weeks had been bad enough. The only thing really keeping you there was Steve. You certainly didn't want it to become something permanent.
"Mr. Presley, I'm flattered, but I'm afraid I'll have to decline." You feigned a polite smile.
At your response, Elvis narrowed his eyes and slowly nodded, and as he turned around to leave, you felt a weight getting lifted off of your chest.
Thank fucking god.
But then, just as you were he was about to open the door and exit the room, he paused, seemed to linger before he turned back to you.
"If you don't mind, of course, may I just ask ya' why?" And then, in moments, there it was. The one question that could be the bane of your existence.
"Well, uh, I actually already accepted a job offer." Instead of nodding and finally leaving you alone, Elvis only walked closer to you. "From who?" he asked, a certain suspicion lacing his voice.
And, not wanting this to be like a repeat of last time, you answered quickly. "Steve."
An uncomfortable silence followed, and your vision remained glued to the floor as Elvis stared at you for a long, hard moment.
"Y'know, I could pay twice as much as he's payin' you."
At the comment, you stared at Elvis in disbelief and quickly tried to think of an excuse. "Well-- um, that's very generous, Mr. Presley, but it would be much too rude to tell Steve that I'm going to be working for you the day I'm supposed to fly out. The tickets have already been bought too."
"I can pay for the tickets."
"That's-- thank you, but I simply cannot. I've already accepted. It just wouldn't be right."
You expected him to finally fold-- to accept that he'd lost, but he simply couldn't.
Or maybe he just wasn't losing.
"Y/n, what does your father work as?" The question caught you off-guard, and you stared at Elvis, almost frightful, as you hesitantly responded. "Oh, um, I'm not sure, exactly..." You lied. You hated lying, but it was necessary. It was necessary to lie in this instance.
"He's a car dealer. I'm right about that, aren't I?" You stared back at Elvis in shock, unsure of how on Earth he could have received that information. He then nodded to himself, a satisfied smile gracing his lips.
"He is. You know, I think I actually have a buddy who is pretty high on the board of your dad's company. Owns quite a bit of it too. 'm sure he knows your father." You let out a small breath at the end of his statement. Breathe. You had to remember to breathe.
"Oh-- is, is that so?" You stammered out, unable to move anything but your lips. Elvis was now full-on grinning.
"Yeah-- I think he even mentioned him once! Said he was a real nice guy. I'd hate to see him out of work. But, y'know, jobs are running short nowadays." The sympathy at the end of his voice didn't soothe your conscience, only added to your unease mixed with fear. You opened your mouth to reply-- to answer with something, anything, that would make him change his mind, but found that no words left your chapped lips.
And so, you folded. Letting out a shaky breath, you slowly nodded, accepting the job. You knew you were being overdramatic, knew that no one would truly sympathize with your situation, but you couldn't blame them. After all, what woman wouldn't want to work for the Elvis Presley?
And it seemed so illogical, to say that you didn't want to do so because he merely tried to kiss you, but you were sure there was something else behind those blue eyes-- something darker. Something dangerous.
You froze when long arms wrapped around you in an embrace, but then sank into it, looking for comfort of any sort. Of course, you didn't want the man who put you in this situation in the first place to be the one to offer you the most comfort, but you know no one else would.
And so, you allowed yourself to imagine he was Steve, and that you were states away from him, even if only for fleeting moments, blissfully unaware of the sickeningly dark grin that had spread across his face.

As it turns out, designing clothing for the one and only Elvis was no easy feat.
One would reasonably expect it to be simple in some which way— after all, the man seemed to always know what he wanted and would always strive to get it— but sitting in a deafeningly quiet room with the musician after you had just asked him if he had any ideas for an outfit defied all of your expectations.
You’d originally imagined the conversation would be smooth like it was, similarly to when you’d first met him, meaning Elvis would come in and tell you any ideas he had or looks he wanted to go for and would possibly ask you for some advice, but none was such the case. An uncomfortable feeling permeated throughout the air as the silence drew on, and after a couple more moments of almost unbearable tension, you simply couldn’t take it anymore.
"As I'm sure you must know, Mr. Presley, costumes and style can be a great way to express yourself in your show, and even in your real life sometimes," you'd often go on tangents like these with clients, hoping to inspire them in some way. "I found myself in my work, in my style, and I'm certain that you can do the same and find yourself again. It may not seem like much, but picking the right costume is very important. Now, do you have any possible ideas? A look you're aiming for?"
Elvis's eyes flitted to you as he shifted slightly, eyes focused intensely on nothing in particular.
It didn't take you long for you to realize why Steve had spoken of you being needed to help get Elvis back on his feet-- it was like, between one movie or another that he'd merely been thrown into, he'd truly forgotten who he was.
"Well, I think..." Elvis sighed and ran a hand through his coifed hair. "Colonel's been wantin' me to dress up in a Christmas sweater, but I sure as hell ain't doin' that..." He bit his lip in contemplation. "Steve's been thinkin' that something revealing might be good, or something dark blue to contrast with all o' the Christmas colors..."
“Is that what you want, Elvis?” Elvis paused briefly, supposedly stunned by the question. Considering the fact that you had said it in a somewhat odd manner, you said:
"Let me rephrase that, actually-- what do you want? Not Steve, not Colonel, not anyone. What do you want to wear on that stage? What do you want to perform in? This choice is up to you, and it should only be yours. Don't let anyone else sway your opinions."
Elvis took a deep breath as he racked his mind and he tried to figure out what he wanted, what he desired. One would imagine it’d be plain and simple, but after a life of being burdened with the needs of others, one would easily forget their own, no matter how stubborn one could be.
“I want something...” Elvis's eyes snapped closed as he pondered your question. What did he want?
“I want something... edgy.” You didn’t miss the smile that lit up on Elvis’s face when he came up with the word. “Something raw, something...” his voice trailed off and he narrowed his eyes as he flit through his unorganized thoughts. "I want it to be dangerous, intimidating..." A boyish sort of grin adorned his features. "I want it to be me," he finished.
You merely nodded, quickly jotting down some things in your notebook before staring back at Elvis.
"Leather, that's what you need," you decided, leaning over to reach for the black material among the others that were spread out on the table. "Good old-fashioned leather. It's risky, intimidating, hard, but most importantly, it's you."
Elvis felt the leather material in his hand, brought it up near his eyes to examine it closer, and narrowed them, before bringing it further away and rubbing the material between his thumb and forefinger contemplatively.
Realizing your possible mistake, your cheeks heated up ever so slightly. "But, of course, if you're not a fan--" you were quickly cut off by a loud "--No!" followed by a quick apology. "It's- it's perfect. It's exactly what I need," Elvis explained, "I just didn't realize that you'd figure it out all so soon."
You took this as a compliment and offered Elvis a meek smile. "Well, it's what I do, so I'd sure hope I’d be okay at it after almost a decade of doing it."
At this, Elvis stared at you with an undecipherable expression written all over his face and opened his mouth to speak, but it seemed as if the specific words had died on his tongue the second he cracked his jaw open. He slowly shut it closed and allowed the silence that once was to return, though you certainly weren’t going to allow it to remain as long as it did before.
Worried that you'd overstepped boundaries by using a bit too much sarcasm, you changed the subject. “Now that we’ve got the materials down, I do believe we’ll need to think of a specific design,” you said, grabbing your notebook as you sat down in your seat. “Do you have anything in mind? Just general concepts can go a long way.”
Elvis stared at you briefly with a certain intensity that almost brought butterflies to your stomach, but the expression was quickly forgotten as Elvis spoke.
“I’d like it to be unforgivable,” he said, his eyes wandering around the room in thought. “Unforgettable. Something iconic, like a leather jacket.” To this, you nodded, and said, "Is that it? Of course, a leather jacket is iconic, but it's an icon that many men have tried on."
"Well, what were you thinkin', then?"
You smiled, "A full leather suit." You showed him your notebook and pointed to the sketch. "There can't be anything more unforgivable than that."
To this, Elvis grinned and bit his lip with a certain satisfaction, and nodded.
“But just to make sure, that’ll be one hot suit, especially if you’re going to be doing some dancing numbers in it. You sure you’ll be okay with that, Mr. Presley?”
In response, Elvis's grin only grew wider, and in a deep, velvety voice, he said, “Perfect.”
Spending time with Elvis proved to be even more enjoyable than you’d initially anticipated.
Although your work together led to some long silences, it never hindered either of your abilities to keep up a lengthy conversation. You could imagine yourself talking with the musician for hours without ceasing if his or your own work didn’t beckon the two of you away from each other. Ah, yes. It was truly ironic how the very thing that brought the two of you together was the exact thing that also drew you apart. But, alas, Elvis’s workload never faltered, and the same could be said about yours.
As you worked on a couple of pieces of clothing some of the dancers were going to wear, your mind inevitably wandered to Elvis’s wife, Priscilla. Though you’d never met her, you couldn’t help but feel bad for her. Elvis had a couple of times spoken to you of how he craved to spend more time with her— and yet, it seemed as though the forces that be did not wish to see the two of them together. He spoke of his guilt, explaining how his work seemed to have completely taken over his life, and you couldn’t blame him.
It was never quite easy, being famous. People always relied on you, depended on your presence. Days off were not standard for people like Elvis, this much, you knew.
And while, yes, the days you spoke ever so much may have blurred the lines between your professional relationship with Elvis and your personal, you convinced yourself that it was for the best. If Elvis viewed you as some sort of confidant, you had no issues obliging to the role, though you wouldn’t bend down to his wishes of addressing him by his first name.
Not yet, that is.
And so, when Elvis knocked on your office door and entered in, tired and battered, you made no protest when he sat down on one of the chairs beside you.
“Whatcha workin’ on?” he asked in a raspy tone, that of a man that you assumed must have only recently just sung his heart out.
“Just some outfits for some of the dancers,” you replied, continuing your sewing work though offering a glance towards Elvis.
“D’you mind if I have a look?” You moved as to allow Elvis to view the piece you were working on, who walked up beside you and stared at it and then at you, in admiration.
“You’re real good at this, y’know,” he complimented. “Steve wasn’t kiddin’ when you said that you were the best in the industry. You got some real talent.”
At the high praise, your cheeks burned a bright pink, and you tried to hide it as he stared at the piece of clothing. “Thank you,” is all you replied, not trusting yourself to say more.
“No need to thank me. I’m just tellin’ the truth.” No longer could you hide your blush as you smiled abashedly and let out a small chuckle.
And then, suddenly, you paused, eyes wide as you glanced at the clock behind you.
“Shit—” you mumbled, momentarily forgetting you were at work. “I mean— sorry, Mr. Presley, but I have to get going.”
“Now what’s got a lady like you in such a hurry?” He asked, staring at you curiously as you raced to grab your things.
“Steve told me to meet him at twelve.” Elvis’s aura seemed to have changed slightly at the comment, but you didn’t pay attention as you absentmindedly searched for your purse in a frenzied panic.
“Pickin’ you up for lunch?” You didn't even notice the slight malice that laced his words, as, by the time he’d spoken them, you’d just found what you were looking for, so you assumed the question was simply an inquiry.
“No. Don’t know what it’s for, but it’s probably got something to do with work or something else important like that.” You didn’t bother mentioning how you would have truly appreciated it if that were the reason, as you didn’t see the situation fit for such a confession to your still relatively new client.
Besides, as close as he occasionally got with you, you still expected yourself to remain professional at all times with him. Though he was a friend, he was still someone you worked for, and that meant you had to keep a somewhat fortified barrier between your life and his.
At your reassurance, Elvis’s demeanor duly shifted, and he shot you a charming smile. “Well then, Y/n, suppose I’ll see you around.” He offered you a wave and was out the door in the blink of an eye, seemingly more pleased with himself than moments ago, but for the life of you, you couldn’t figure out as to why.
Alas, you couldn’t dwell on the matter for much longer as you rushed out your door and towards where Steve had told you to meet him.
Elvis was never a very jealous man.
Or, at the very least, not often, and especially not when it came to romance and love. He knew that women practically worshipped him--he wasn’t blind to the way that they looked at him, what they thought of him.
And, besides, he was married to the most wonderful wife anyone could ever have, so it was almost surprising to him when he felt such a sour emotion at the simple prospect of you and Steve being together. After all, he had his own wife at home.
So why, he would ask himself, did he feel jealousy, especially in such an intense way? And why did he still feel it? You made it seem pretty clear that you and Steve clearly didn’t have anything going on, so why did he still feel such vigorous anger?
Elvis sat in your office, pondering these very questions. Of course, he knew what the Colonel would do if he found him off-task, but he couldn’t find it in his heart to do anything about it. Either way, it wasn’t like the Colonel knew of his true plans. He was sure his anger due to his lounging in your office would be nothing compared to his anger should he discover Elvis’s deceitfulness when it came to his true intentions of how the Christmas Special would play out.
Regardless, after he’d decided that he’d spent enough time flitting through his thoughts, Elvis decided that it was time to return to the studio to see what the others would need from him. He was certain they were searching for him now.
"Steve, I'm really sorry I'm late." You apologized as soon as you walked in the door. "I must have lost track of time."
In response, all Steve gave you was a brisk nod, and seemed to invite you to sit down. "It's fine, it happens," he then said, taking a seat in front of you. "Plus, I only called you here so we could talk about your job so far." He smiled. "How is it?"
You were surprised that all Steve wanted to do was chit-chat, but you were relieved, too, as you realized your lateness was not as unprofessional as you had initially thought it to be.
“It’s pretty great, actually. It’s definitely been fun— plus, I enjoy seeing this part of the country. As you can tell, I’m not around these types of areas very often.” You smiled all but embarrassedly and let out a small chuckle. The man in front of you's gaze was distant as you slowly allowed your giggles to dissipate.
“D’you you like traveling?” Steve then asked, to which you nodded.
“You know, Y/n, I was thinking,” Steve adjusted his posture ever so slightly as he spoke. “You don’t get all that many clients back in your town, do you?”
Your brows furrowed as you shrugged somewhat hesitantly. “Not specifically, no. I get a decent amount, considering the size of my town, but relatively, no.” You replied.
“Have you ever wanted to travel a bit more? See more of the country?”
You quirked an eyebrow. “What are you saying, Steve?”
“Well, like you said, you like it here, right? Like seeing new parts of the country?" He leaned back in his chair. "I’m proposing you come work with me and my crew.” You opened your mouth to reply, but Steve beat you to it.
"You could travel with me and my crew and work on costumes for shows and sets we help produce and direct. Of course, you'll be able to go home for holidays and those sorts of things, but you'll mostly be traveling around the country."
"Oh, Steve, that sounds like a great idea, but..." You tried to protest at first but soon found your arguments fell short in every instance. To add to that, your eyes caught each of Steve's muffled expressions of disappointment or hurt when you brought up yet another reason to decline, and so, you caved. You gave Steve your word that you'd think about it and consider making the arrangements to make it happen, such as discussing it with your parents, and the two of you knew that this practically meant you had already arranged the plans. You'd never hint towards your answer being a no to a yes unless it was certainly one of the two.
"Great!" He gave you a satisfied smile, and you couldn't help but feel your own lips upturn at his infectious expression. "You know, if you choose to say yes, I know you'll love it, Y/n. It's nice-- being able to work with so many icons in so many different places."
"Sure sounds like it."
Steve nodded, "Plus, I wouldn't mind having you around a bit more," His smile shifted from satisfied to coy. "I feel like I don't get to see you as much as I'd like to."
It didn't take a genius to notice the shift of the atmosphere in the room, and you felt a funny feeling in your stomach at the comment. Of course, you weren't one to get in over your head, but looking at the way he was staring at you, you'd be a fool to say the gaze wasn't the least bit tender.
"Yeah," Your own stare fixed onto the floor all but abashedly. "I could say the same."
The rest of your day went by relatively quickly, your mind buzzing with thoughts of Steve and your future. It excited you, truly, to think that, after all of these years of having shown no more than a little interest in you romantically, he seemed to suddenly have had a change of heart.
You hummed along to one of the Elvis songs playing in the background as you worked on organizing some of your materials. Everything was scattered into different nicks and crannies, and though you were able to find it all, it still appeared as if something had exploded in your office.
And, although you didn’t want to admit it, you wanted to look at least a bit organized to anyone who dared to enter your den.
You all but jumped when you heard someone enter ever so suddenly, and turned around to face no other than Elvis. Your brows furrowed. It was funny, almost-- you hadn't even noticed the music come to a halt.
"Hey," he greeted, offering you a charming smile as he walked up to you. "I was told to come in here--well, 'bout now?"
Your eyes wandered to the clock as you slowly nodded, and returned his smile. "Of course, just stand right there and I'll get everything I need."
Measuring someone, as you'd come to learn, was a very intimate act in many ways. Stripping until you were near-naked for someone else who you most likely barely knew proved this with ease, and it was always so quiet-- so slow. Every mannerism seemed so tender when one would think about it.
You felt an intense gaze practically tear through your soul as you took your measuring tape and took the measurements for Elvis's waist, hips, height, etc. You made an effort to not look back up at him, but you could feel his eyes boring into the back of your head with such a ferocious aura, it intimidated you.
You could have sworn that every time your hands brushed against Elvis's bare skin, somehow, he seemed to linger in that position-- to pause and allow the moment to resonate with the both of you. You weren't sure how exactly it happened, but there was certainly no denying that it did.
Once you had finished up, you offered Elvis a simple nod and said, "I'm done," before turning around to allow Elvis to put his clothes back on.
"Y/n?" You all but froze at the sound of Elvis's deep voice, though didn't dare turn around to face him. He let out a chuckle before opening his mouth once more. "Y'know you can look at me, right?"
You mistakenly took this as a sign that he, somehow, had already gotten dressed, but you were most certainly mistaken. You shifted awkwardly in your place as you stared at his almost naked figure. "Yes, Mr. Presley." You mustered on a shy smile, not feeling very comfortable in any which way.
"Good," he then said, a satisfied smile planted on his features. You didn't know what to say in return, just let the silence permeate throughout the room.
Elvis's gaze then morphed into an intense, intimate one. You didn't even notice as he took slow, calculated steps toward you.
"What I wanted to tell you, Y/n, was that you've been doin' a real amazing job here," he complimented, his expression not faltering in the least.
You offered him a tight-lipped smile in return, still feeling somewhat nervous as to what exactly was happening. "Thank you."
"Never seen no one like you," he grinned, his pearly teeth glinting dimly. "Not one."
Unsure of how to answer this, you merely nodded.
It was at that moment that you noticed the lack of distance between you and the man before you when his hand cautiously made its way up to cup your cheek. You were surprised at the contact. It unnerved you, almost, to think that he could traverse such a long distance and go unnoticed by someone staring directly at him. "Never realized how pretty your eyes were," he muttered. You stood, frozen in your spot, as he spoke. "Never seen you this up close before. Didn't realize what I was missin'..."
He leaned it, and you just stood paralyzed, stunned by the surprising turn of the situation. And yet, just as you were sure Elvis's lips were about to have a taste of your own, a knock on the door paused the moment. You let out a gasp as Elvis pulled away from you in milliseconds, eyes wide as he stared at the door.
"Son of a bitch," he grumbled, as he angrily threw on his clothes and opened the door. You didn't hear very much as he stormed out of the room and slammed the door, only catching some tidbits but allowing yourself to take a moment to process the situation.
You were stunned, to say the least.
You and Elvis were friends, of course, but you never expected the situation to escalate on such a high level. You'd never expected him to possibly consider you in a romantic way. After all, you were merely his costume designer. And, as an additional reason, he had a wife and a newborn child for crying out loud.
You decided to head over to the bathroom to take a minute. You let out a sigh as you washed some water over yourself and stare at your reflection in the mirror.
You knew you'd be flat-out lying to yourself if you said you weren't attracted to Elvis, but every girl was. There was no denying that there was certainly some charm to his infectious grin and that his dancing certainly did arouse some erotic feelings within you, but that didn't mean that you wanted to kiss him-- though you were sure he had much more in mind than just kissing.
And, besides, you weren't that kind of girl. You wanted a real man and a steady relationship, not some one-night fling with your new and temporary boss who you'd only just met recently. Of course, he was a perfectly kind and considerate man, but you could tell that he did have some trouble harnessing his emotions.
And so, your eyes wandered to the floor as you left the bathroom and you decided to make sure the event did not become a topic of discussion for you or Elvis, whatsoever. You just hoped that he'd never bring it up. You'd continue work as normal as if nothing ever happened, and you wouldn't have to worry about it once you left to work with Steve.
How wrong you were about your future, you'd later learn.
. summary / request : you're a pretty small and local fashion designer, so you are both thrilled and nervous when you get a call from a long-time friend of yours, steve, who tells you that he's got a job for you in vegas for no other than elvis presley. when the two of you meet, sparks fly, but you can't help but notice a more sinister underlining to your friendly relationship as time goes on.
. notes / warning : swearing, usage of drugs (i.e. cigarettes), nothing too dark for this chapter. though i have to say that elvis isn't seen very much in this chapter as i was setting things up, but he'll certainly be much more prominent in future chapters. and, i was wondering, i'm pondering between doing a slowburn and more of a quickly-paced fic, so if you have a preference, please leave it in the comments! thanks, and enjoy!

You'd always loved designing and sewing clothing. Even when you were younger, you remember picking up knitting remarkably fast with your grandmother, who, of course, loved to teach you. Scarves were a thing of the past in only a month, and you had the impressive ability to knit sweaters and stuffies when you were only seven. Sewing, however, proved to be more challenging, as your grandmother managed to teach you the basics of it, but died before you turned ten.
Although, instead of discouraging you from pursuing your passion in clothing, this only motivated you to improve quicker. You could remember going to every library and bookstore in town and finding ever book you could find on sewing to try to get better at the meticulous craft of clothing design and making, and it without a doubt paid off. By your teens you near-perfectly knew the ins and outs of making clothing, and already new some things about design.
You had always appreciated your parents' supporting of your passion in the clothing industry. They eagerly payed your college fees once you had been accepted into one of America's top fashion design schools, and listened intently when you spoke of your future as a clothing designer. You always felt so fortunate to have such wonderful parents in your life.
During your time in college you made many friends, including a certain Steve Binder, and although he didn't technically go to your school, you did spend a great deal amount of time with him as he was skilled in the art of helping anyone find themselves, which not only helped you a great deal when it came to designing clothing that you loved, but made you realize that style was another outlet for just that.
After college you were welcomed home with many job offers, a couple of which you accepted, but you found that you didn't appreciate the stress and pressure that came to being in the public eye of the fashion industry. A little disheartened, you searched for other types of jobs to pursue for people with your type of skill. Luckily, you were able to land some gigs as a personal fashion designer for some somewhat wealthy people near your hometown, and soon found that you greatly enjoyed designing personal outfits for people, and so, you decided to pursuit a career that line of work.
It didn't take long to start climbing the social hierarchy, you soon found out, as in no less than a year you were working for some rich fellows and occasionally some people leaning more on the famous side, all while remaining under the radar of the general public.
And now, almost a decade later, you were happy to report to anyone and everyone that you still love your job, although you had to admit that it could be lonely at times, but you always had music to accompany you.
Swinging your hips side to side as you softly hummed the tune to the song that was currently playing on the radio, the name of which you couldn't quite remember, you smiled as you stared at your newly finished piece of clothing. Mr. Wilson would most certainly love it, this, you were sure of. The suit was perfectly formal but not too over-the-top, and managed to capture the man's essence in it effortlessly.
A wringing from your phone snapped you out of your thoughts, and you hastily walked over to it and picked it up.
"Hello, this is personal clothing stylist Y/n L/n speaking, how may I help you?" you recited, your smile never once faltering. You'd learned through your years of work that smiling while you were talking was crucial when it came to sounding friendly, even when the other person couldn't see you.
"Ah, Y/n. It's been a while, hasn't it?" a familiar voice on the other line spoke. Though you couldn't quite decipher it immediately, once you eventually did, you let out an amused chuckle and muttered a "hey Steve," into the telephone.
"How have you been?" asked your friend.
"Good, good. Busy, but I suppose that's always a good thing. You know what they say: if you love what you do, you'll never work a day in your life."
"Well said, well said."
"And you? How's your work been?"
"Same as yours. Been able to travel quite a bit," you heard Steve let out a quiet laugh. "Actually, that reminds me, I've got a job for you."
"Oh yeah?" You tried not to hide the slight disappointment in your voice as you spoke. It wasn't that you were disappointed by the fact that he had a job for you by any means-- you'd simply let your hopes go up and assumed that Steve was calling you for leisure, not work.
It was irritating, truly-- to think that your small crush on the man from when you were younger had developed over the years, and although you had come to accept that he simply wasn't that into you, but you couldn't help but hope something would suddenly change out of habit-- that a fire would somehow spark in his heart for you and he'd realize after all these years that you were someone that'd he'd consider liking as a bit more than a friend, but you were glad to have him as a friend, nonetheless.
"Yeah. Got an especially big client this time, too. Says he wants to find himself again. I couldn't help but feel like you could help him with just that."
You felt your cheeks heat up at the complement.
"I'm flattered, truly, Steve, but I must ask, how can I really help with something like that? Clothing can only help people so much, and I can't help but feel like whoever you're talking about may need something more than just a new change of clothes."
"I'd agree with you if the situation were different, but this one's pretty special. My client has a show coming up, and he's trying to change up everything and anything he can. The outfit is definitely going to be an important part of that, and I couldn't think of anyone more skilled in the art of making the perfect clothing for the perfect person other than you."
You felt your hands grow clammy at the high praise. You knew Steve was never one to bullshit, and he'd worked with many people like you in the movie industry, so when he said that, he meant it. He truly believed you were one of the -- if not the best clothing stylist in all of America. "Oh, you mean it, Steve? Little ol' me?" You shook your head and couldn't help but grin widely. "Who is this client, anyway?"
"Elvis." He didn't offer up more info, and you couldn't help but gawk at the news.
"Elvis-- you mean the Elvis Presley? The king of rock-and-roll, sole owner of the heart of every woman in America? That Elvis Presley?"
"The one and only." You couldn't understand how Steve seemed so calm about this.
"And me? You want me to be the one to make his outfit? Steve, I don't think I'm very qualified for this position..." You simply couldn't believe it. Though you'd worked on some attire for some people with some important titles, you'd never done something this big. It all felt so surreal. You, a local clothing stylist, were being offered to make an outfit for the Elvis Presley.
"The gig's in California. The flight'll be paid for and so will the hotel, so don't worry about the bill. Can I book you a plane ticket for tomorrow?"
"Tomorrow!? That early?"
"Be at the airport at 7:30am at the latest. Wouldn't want to miss your flight and be late. I'll make sure you get your ticket before the ride. I'll be there to pick you up once you land."
You attempted to protest, but your efforts were futile as Steve had already hung up the phone.
The sneaky bastard.
You tried to think ill of Steve as you started packing your things for the next day, but much to your dismay, you couldn't help but feel thankful that he'd given you such an amazing opportunity. After all, it wasn't just anyone who had the opportunity to design an outfit for the one and only king of rock-and-roll. You couldn't think badly of him for providing you with something like that, even if he was cutting the timing a little short.
Letting out a sigh, you stared at the finished suit that you had only recently just been completed. I'll have my parents send it over, you thought to yourself as you folded your clothing. Your parents had always been good with that.
The night before your flight to California was, arguably, one of the worst night of your life in terms of sleep. You hadn't even managed to fall asleep until around 3:00am, thoughts of meeting Elvis Presley buzzing through your mind. You had tried many times to settle your thoughts and tried to convince yourself that you were barely going to spend much time with the man, and that the most interaction with him that you'd surely have would be a conversation on the topic of what he wanted and a brief period to measure him, but nothing could cease your restless mind.
When you had, in fact, woken up at 6:00am, (which was annoying, as you would have preferred to have gotten up earlier and to have been much more early when you came to the airport) you were without a doubt completely and utterly exhausted. You wished that Steve would have been kind enough to provide you a week to prepare, or to at least get ready to meet one of the most famous men on the planet, before you had to jump on a plane ride to California. But, alas, Steve was never truly one for waiting-- this was something that was undeniable.
Your limbs ached as you brushed your teeth, threw on some clothes, brushed your hair, and even when you ate breakfast. Once you had finally been able to get on the road, you found yourself pressing abnormally hard on the gas pedal as you knew you were cutting it short on time, since the airport was about forty five minutes away at best.
Once you had, in fact, gotten there in one piece, you dashed towards the front to have yourself and your luggage checked in, which was able to be done in a somewhat timely manner. You were sure you must have concerned the woman at the front desk you were talking to with your franticness, but you tried to pay no mind to that fact as you entered the plane as you sat down between two older gentlemen (which, mind you, felt very awkward and uncomfortable).
Regardless, you couldn't help the gradually increasing excitement you felt as the plane got closer and closer to Burbank. You could hardly remain still on your seat once you had finally landed-- it took everything in you to simply take a few seconds before you unfastened your seatbelt and sprung up from the seat you had been confined to for ever so long.
Once you had left plane you were in, you were pleased to find Steve standing only a few meters before you, offering you a friendly wave.
"Hey, Steve," you greeted, offering the man a kind smile. He, in turn, did the same.
"Y/n! Good to see you."
"Not like I had much of a choice."
Steve raised an eyebrow and gave you a slight smile. "So would you have denied the job if you were given the chance?" A more cheeky smile spread its way across Steve's lips-- something rare that wasn't perceived by many, but something you has the opportunity of seeing-- in response to your silence. "That's what I thought. Now, why don't we get in my car and head over there?"
The drive itself wasn't too long, but similarly to how the plane ride felt, seconds seemed to last for an eternity. When you two had eventually arrived, you were practically shaking in your boots. Though you knew you'd most likely have some time before you met Elvis, just being in the same vicinity as the musician spiked your anxiety.
Steve seemed to have noticed this, however, as he offered you a reassuring smile. "Don't worry. EP's a nice guy, trust me. I was just as nervous when I first met him."
At his confession, you let out a skeptical chuckle. "I can almost guarantee you that you were not as nervous as I am right now."
Steve merely shrugged at this, before slipping a cigarette out of his pocket with his right hand and a match with his other. He plopped the cigarette into his mouth and lit it. "Now, let's go find your hotel room," he said, and you didn't miss the way his hand was placed delicately behind your back as he lead you inside.
"Oh wow-- this place is quite extravagant," you mumble mostly to yourself as you stare in awe at the gorgeous architecture and the high ceilings. The fancy jewels and furniture that were placed around the room alone would have most likely been worth more than all of the money you'd ever made.
"Yeah, well, I supposed the Presley Enterprises thought it was wise to have everyone stay in the same hotel, which I suppose is nice." Steve's hand was slipped into his pocket as he abruptly stopped. "We've arrived."
His hand then came right back out of his pocket as he handed you a key. You smiled timidly as you accepted it and placed it into the keyhole, and you felt yourself smile as a satisfying click was felt once you inserted it in and turned it.
To say that your breath was taken away once you entered the room would have been an understatement, and although you were sure that this room was one of the cheapest the hotel had to offer, it was beautiful nonetheless.
"Feel free to run up room service as much as you'd like. I'll leave you here for a couple of hours but I'll come back around noon. You can catch up on sleep or prepare for anything you feel needs to be prepared for."
You smiled, "Thanks, Steve. This means a lot."
The man, in question, shrugged and gave you a small smile in return. "Don't mention it."
Once your friend had left, you placed your room keys somewhere safe and started unpacking the fabric samples that you had taken out for Elvis Presley. You'd decided to only choose the most expensive materials as you knew something cheap would never suit a man with his kind of title.
Once you had made sure they were thoroughly organized, you let out a tired yawn as you dragged yourself over to your new bed. You took a solid moment to stare at the neatly tucked in sheets and the meticulousness that must come from whoever laid the bedding, and felt almost guilty as you ever so carefully ruined it and slipped underneath the covers. You didn't bother putting on any pyjamas-- you were simply much too tired. And, besides, you'd have to get up soon enough, so what was the harm?
Though short, your nap was somewhat enjoyable. The bags under your eyes (which you'd only learned were there once you'd decided to go to the bathroom right before your head hit the pillow) were less pronounced, though you still hastily chose to add some foundation and powder to make them seem less noticeable before Steve came.
Having nothing much to do as you weren't very tired, nor did you need to organize or prepare anything else before you inevitably met Elvis Presley, you placed on some high heels and started fidgeting with your hands. It had always been a habit of yours that you could never quite shake off, but you were fine with that, you supposed. It was much better than many of the vices that some of your colleagues and friends had picked up.
A knock on the door startled you out of your thoughts, and you smiled meekly as you walked up to the entrance of your room and greeted no other than Steve.
"Glad to see you're ready," he said, taking a quick peer into your hotel room. "We're just going to set you up at the studio today, so you can bring your materials and supplies with you. I'll explain how things will work when we're there." You nodded attentively and grabbed your things when your friend finished explaining the current situation.
You came outside and noticed that there is already a cab inside, and when the driver spotted the two of you, seemingly having expected Steve's arrival, he beckoned for the both fo you to enter to which you obliged.
The drive-- luckily-- didn't take very long, and in roughly ten minutes you were standing in front of an NBC studio. It practically screamed for attention, the letters and light all around in flashing in a hypnotizing manner.
"After you," said the man beside you, who, you ever so suddenly noticed, was not beside you any longer, rather, he was opening the door open. You muttered your appreciation as you walked through the studio doors, and all but gaped at the large interior. While, yes, you'd expected to studio to be large, nothing could compare to its truly colossal size.
Steve didn't even bother staring you as he, too, gazed at the room.
"Pretty big, huh?"
You let out a sarcastic chuckle. "Huge."
You followed Steve through the studio as he started meandering around the halls.
"Were are we going?" You asked curiously, after a couple of moments.
"Just to your new office. Then I'll lay some ground rules." At this, an eyebrow of yours quirked.
"Ground rules?"
"Yup."
Steve didn't offer you any more information about the topic.
Once the two of you finally entered what you presumed to be your new office, Steve motioned for you to take a seat, and so, you did just that. You stared up at him, with a hidden interest as to what his next words would be.
"Ok, so, ground rules," he starts, pacing around the room in a peculiarly formal manner. "Firstly, you aren't to speak to the Colonel to tell him what you are designing." To this, your eyebrows raised, and you stared at Steve in a way as if to say, please explain.
"The Colonel is Elvis's manager-- you know this much, yeah?" You nodded at his statement. It was unlike any normal person not to know the Colonel. He was a publicly hated figure, known for practically stealing Elvis's pay check and being the most greedy man on the face of the Earth. "Yeah, well, the thing is, he doesn't know about Elvis's plans. He believes that Elvis is supposed to and is going to do a Christmas special."
"A Christmas special? Elvis?" You echoed incredulously, resulting in a nod from Steve.
"That's what the Colonel and the investors believe. But, as I'm sure you could imagine, Elvis isn't a fan, so he's decided to take on a new path to this whole thing-- but the Colonel doesn't know, not just yet. I'll try to make sure he doesn't talk to you, but if he does, just talk about something Christmas related you've got in the works." Your brows furrowed. Was this job even legal?
"Now, since most of the clothing is made, your job is simply to provide the perfect outfits for Elvis--" Upon seeing your now worried expression, Steve tried to offer you a reassuring smile. "--Who you'll meet today, but won't yet work with, so don't worry about that too much right now."
"That-- that's good. Yeah. That works." Your heart was racing at the mere prospect of being in the same building as Elvis-- so the simple idea of meeting him made your knees weak. You could barely speak without fumbling over your words.
Of course, you weren't quite like how some girls were when it came to fawning over Elvis, but there was no denying that you loved rock-and-roll, and you never minded a pretty face to accompany it. And, after all, you were going to be meeting America's most popular icon of the decade. It was only natural to be a bit nervous.
"Alright," Steve seemed to nod to himself. "I'll give you about... ten minutes? Then I'll introduce you to Elvis."
The moments that followed felt much longer than when you were on that plane ride.
You wasted no time in unpacking your materials and placing them in an orderly manner around the room. Once you had finished, you sat back down in the chair you had previously been seated on. Your knee bounced up and down as your mind wandered and tried to find something interesting to think about.
Unfortunately, however, your mind was clouded with thoughts of Elvis. You tried to bury them deep down as you occasionally readjusted your tightly-fitted dress and toyed with your hair. More than an eternity seemed to have passed before Steve had finally entered the room, and didn't give you so much as a word as he nodded in your direction, as if beckoning for you to follow him, to which you obliged.
Upon seeing the back of a black-haired man in a suit, your eyes nearly flew out of their sockets. He was presumably waiting for the both of you-- and with slicked back and an iconic greasy hairstyle, there was no denying who the man before you was.
Elvis Presley.
"Elvis," Steve greeted in a formal tone. The man, in question, turned around, and right you were. It was undoubtedly no other than Elvis Presley.
"I'd like to introduce you to your new clothing designer, Y/n L/n. She's the best that I've ever seen in the industry." Now, this peaked Elvis's interest. He knew how stingy Steve was when it came to compliments, so you truly must have been something.
Elvis's eyes briefly raked over your body, and, feeling unable to help it, you pulled down your dress as low as you could and offered a small, shy smile.
"It's a pleasure to meet you, Mr. Presley."
Elvis could only shake his head bashfully at the formal greeting, and in a deep, husky voice, said, "Pleasure's all mine," and offered you the most charming of smiles. "And, please, call me Elvis."
Once Steve had left and allowed you two to chat for a little while, you knew that you were visibly shaking, but Elvis was kind and tried to offer you as much reassurance as he could, and it was endearing-- his humbleness, his caring nature. Conversation flowed like a river between you two when the ice finally broke and you were able to become a little bit more open.
Regardless, the two of you had to cut the conversation short when Elvis got called over by his manager, and he bid you a quick farewell and offered you a grin before leaving you to your own devices.
And watching him walk off, you couldn't shake off the sense that something had just blossomed between the two of you-- something new, something raw. Something that you couldn't quite decipher the connotation of, but you knew would grow.
Your thoughts didn't get too far as you were immediately called over by Steve, who assigned you to a couple of tasks before claiming you were done for the day. At this, you, of course, after a long day, practically ran to your hotel room and collapsed on your bed when you got there. Although you were most certainly excited by the day and had whatever one could consider as "fun" considering you were working, you were still exhausted by your lack of sleep the previous night, so you wasted no time in changing into your pyjamas and clambering back into your bed.
And when your head hit the pillow, your eyes closed as you let fatigue take you over, but couldn't help your whirlwind of thoughts about the show, and Steve, and Elvis, before you truly lost your consciousness.
