RAH-66 Comanche
via
Boeing-Sikorsky RAH-66 Comanche
In 1982, the LHX (Light Helicopter Experimental) program was initiated, with the intent to replace the US Army's UH-1, AH-1, OH-6, and OH-58 helicopters. This program was later refined to remove the utility helicopter role, and emphasize scout/attack roles. Boeing-Sikorsky and Bell-McDonnell Douglas were finalists, with the Boeing-Sikorsky design being chosen in 1991.
The first RAH-66 took flight in January, 1996, with two prototypes being built and flown. Stealth features on the helicopter reduced radar Cross Section (RCS), minimized infrared signature, and quieted rotor noise. Sophisticated electronics were to enable operation in night/bad weather, and weapons ranged from a 20mm cannon in the nose, to missiles in retractable weapons pylons. If stealth was not a necessity, external pylons could carry heavier weapons loads.
In February, 2004, the Comanche program was terminated by the US Army. Many reasons have been given for cancelling the program - risky technologies, rapidly rising costs, and concern about the survivability of the helicopter being among them. Ultimately, nearly $7 billion was spent on the program. The two Comanches built are today on display.
