Robert E. Lee, sectionalism, and his loyalty to the Union: 1857 January 9.
This Day in Robert E. Lee History: 1857 January 9.
Lee writes to Edward Vernon Childe. Lee was then stationed in Texas and Childe was living in France. Lee praised Edward's father's efforts to oppose the forces of sectionalism that were growing in the United States. Lee said, in part:
"On that subject my resolution is taken, & my mind fixed. I know no other Country, no other Government, than the United States & their Constitution."
