Today I was watching this TED talk from Sir Ken Robinson on how schools (and parents) are squashing kids’ creativity. Here’s the anecdote from the end: Gillian Lynne (CATS and Phantom of the Opera choreographer) was horrible at doing school work. The teachers told her parents to get her evaluated because she basically was distracting everyone and getting nothing accomplished- they assumed she had a mental disorder. At the end of her evaluation, the shrink said he needed to talk to her mom and left the room but turned on the radio. Outside, the shrink had Gillian’s mom watch her. She was moving. The shrink told her mom - “Your child isn’t crazy or dumb, she’s a dancer. Take her to a dance school.” She did. The rest is history. I think about how many parents and colleagues lower expectations - they won’t admit it but it’s apparent in meetings- for kids because they have (or think they have) ADHD or they move to much for their liking. Imagine if everyone responded like the shrink instead! We have to let our kids dance, do sports, play music, make art, whatever it is they think of to be creative. Just a friendly reminder from a former wiggly kid and a mom of a current one. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iG9CE55wbtY&feature=share #creativekids #musicisamust #letthemplay #letthemdance #tedtalkseducation #justjstrong #rockstarlearning https://www.instagram.com/p/CB-4dB4hpuzd2ynPUBZT1qu1lwpYebAKA8WVAU0/?igshid=9c35xlechwpl
