I heard from many of you that you didn’t know what was going on or how to respond, so I put together this resource with help from @glaad @chasestrangio of @aclu_nationwide and my friend & long-time collaborator @mabellechell so y’all could better understand and take action in this moment of crisis. This is part 1 of 4 and it’s meant to be an introduction to the greatest legislative challenges facing us right now—several of these bills have already passed and are being signed into law as you read this. I’ll be be posting more in-depth guides on the individual topics of #ReligiousExemption #AntITransMedicalCare and #AntiTransStudentAthletics every day this week. According to a 2017 report by the @uclalawschool @williamsinstitute there are over 150,000 trans kids ages 13-17 in the USA (I’m certain that number has increased in the past 5 years), and that same age group also represents the largest percentage of the trans population overall. These transphobic bills, if passed, will lead to greater discrimination, harassment, and bullying of trans youth as well as increased self-harm, emotional distress, drug abuse, and suicide attempts by trans kids. I know this because I was one, and I’m still recovering from the trauma of having my body targeted and my existence invalidated throughout my entire young life. We are talking about children here. We are talking about innocent young people who just want to be themselves without the state intervening to criminalize their healthcare and extracurriculares. We have actual threats to combat in our society, and trans kids are not one of them. There are not enough of us trans people to win this battle on our own. We need you, cis allies, to pick up the slack and fight for trans youth. Show them you care.
