After he leaves, the timeline resets again, and of course she remembers nothing of what passed between them. That lives in his memory alone—but gives him the strength needed to carry out the final, victorious plan. Afterwards, returning to Earth five years later, he knows he cannot hope that she hasn’t already moved on in his absence.
