In this season of giving thanks, I’m being reminded that God isn’t only in the big things, but He’s in the little things, too. If I truly believe what James says, “Every good and perfect gift is from above…”, then even much needed unexpected AWESOME coffee is one of those good and perfect gifts!
The other day, I was having an extremely busy start to my day - no time for a coffee stop en route to my first responsibility, and a nonstop morning once I’d arrived at my destination. Upon leaving and beginning a line-up of errands in the midst of terrific holiday traffic, getting from place to place to meet deadlines was eating up my time. Thus, no time to grab Starbucks. At 3:00 PM I was finally positioned near a coffee shop, but decided no need to stop since I was meeting friends for linner at 3:30 PM. And, I really needed to return a lightbulb I’d purchased the day before only to realize it was broken when I got home…
I pushed through hoping the lack of caffeine wouldn’t plague me in the form of a headache later in the day…or pose a problem with staying alert during Bible Study post-linner! Pondering this thought, I parked my car and moseyed into Bed, Bath, & Beyond, definitely not walking at my usual brisk speed.
After sharing my plight with the gal at Customer Service, I began to make my way to the lighting department for a replacement bulb. Suddenly, a glorious sound fell upon my ears when I heard a clerk ask the lady ahead of me, “would you like to sample some coffee?" She politely declined and I suddenly found some sprite in my step at the thoughts of being a taste tester and curing a need for caffeine. When approached by the clerk, I jubilantly jumped at the opportunity!
As she brewed me a FULL CUP - not just a mini sample cup - of a delightfully creamy (even without the presence of milk) smooth dark roast bursting with caffeinated joy in a cup, I couldn’t wipe the smile off of my face and found myself silently saying - “THANK YOU, JESUS - YOU HAVE SO MET MY NEED, EVEN A MINOR ONE!” The Lord had provided. It was a wonderful cup of coffee - hot, tasty, AND FREE!Â
As I was in my car sipping the final drinks of my reviving brew, I thought, “is it irreverent to assume that God had provided the coffee?” My final conclusion - NO, I think too often we take things for granted and don’t acknowledge that God is in the little things, too. He is at the very center of our existence, our living , and our provision. He is Jehovah Jireh! He gives me breath, yet He also meets our tiny supplications, like a hot cup of coffee. You may think I’m crazy, but I’m taking it as a reminder to me - “Hey, I’ve got you, Rebekah! Remember EVERY GOOD & PERFECT GIFT IS FROM ME! Don’t leave me out of your daily comings and goings, I’m on this journey with you!”
So, as Thanksgiving week comes to a close, I’m giving thanks for all those things for which I’m grateful - family, friends, life, Jesus, and…coffee! Finding deep JOY in each day!
