Building a Climate Change Unit Using ClassCraft
I have an idea for a unit that I want to build into the program “classcraft”. In my first lesson I introduce the overarching question for the unit: “How can YOU bring balance to Mother Earth and by doing so, help families who are at the front lines of the climate crisis?” For the culminating project, I want students to create a legend or story of the impact of climate change on future generations of First Nation’s Communities in Northern Ontario. Students can create this using the show-what-you-know model and use any sort of medium to present their story/legend. For one of the lessons we will go out and map out a plot of trees in the forest near the school. Students can use their phones to identify the species of trees using "Google Lens”. The purpose of the lesson is to determine how much carbon the trees are storing and to identify trees/biomass as a one main type of carbon sink. Students can reflect on this experience by writing/recording a reflection post in a google doc, or by posting in the stream on google classroom. Another idea I had for a lesson activity for this unit is to set up students with VR headsets and airpano.com (thank you Joanna M for the idea!) students to explore the different biomes in Canada.
