Tom and Isabelle were working a shift in the town hall. Tom was typing away on the hallâs laptop and reading daily documents. Isabelle was writing notes in her notebook, and checking her teal notebooks for more information. It was a normal day in the workplace on the island.Â
Isabelle put down her pen and looked up at Tom. She noted Tomâs focused face as he typed on his laptop. She mentally noted how hard he had been working up until this point. He was always a hard worker who failed to give himself the time to rest. He would usually do this through his nephews, but even then, itâs not truly a rest if youâre still looking after children, is it? She wasnât sure. How would she possibly know? She didnât have children of her own.Â
âHey Tom?â She asked softly.Â
âHm? Yes Isabelle?â he replied, looking up. âWhat do you do to wind down after a long day?â Isabelle asked.Â
âHmmâŠâ Tom thought for a moment. âI usually take care of Timmy and Tommy. Helping them close the store, taking them to the house and reading them a bedtime story before tucking them into bed.â Tom explained.Â
âI seeâŠandâŠafter that?â She asked.Â
âWellâŠI usually go to bed myself.â Tom Nook replied. âThis old raccoon needs his rest after the long shifts, yes yes.â Tom Nook admitted with a chuckle.Â
Isabelle widened her eyes. âYou donât read? Or do any hobbies after work?â Isabelle asked.Â
âWell you see, IsabelleâŠwork IS my hobby.â Tom Nook admitted. âI worked hard to get to this place. No time leftover for funny business.â Tom replied.Â
â...Funny business, huh?â Isabelle sat back and crossed her arms. âI personally prefer calling them âhobbiesâ. They are supposed to help you learn more about yourself and add some variety to your life.â Isabelle explained.Â
âWellâŠWork does that same very thing for me.â Tom explained.Â
âYouâve gotta be getting bored of workâŠâ Isabelle reacted.Â
Tom chuckled. âSomething tells me youâre confusing my feelings for your own, hm?â She teased.
Isabelle rolled her eyes. âSureâŠwhatever you say.â Isabelle said.Â
Tom went right deep into his work once again. It was like Isabelle hadnât interrupted him at all! Some things just donât change, do they?Â
Well, Isabelle was determined to change that. Right here, right now.Â
Isabelle got up out of her seat and picked up her seat. With the chair in hand, Isabelle walked up to Tomâs side of the desk. âWhat are you doing exactly?â She asked him, placing the chair beside him and sitting down.Â
âNothing interesting for you.â Tom replied.Â
âOh really? Try me.â Isabelle encouraged.Â
Tom raised his eyebrows in surprise and looked at his screen. âUhhâŠâ He muttered, unsure how to react himself.Â
âTell me.â Isabelle encouraged him again.Â
Tom sighed and scratched the back of his head. âWellâŠIâm working on a spreadsheet of our representatives' earnings in Bells.â Tom explained. âHe has paid me 10,000 bells today, which is 1000 more bells than yesterday.â He explained. âIf [Player] continues giving 10,000 bells everyday, he should be able to pay for his house upgrade in about 197 days.â Tom admitted. âThough, I have a feeling [Player] will pay different lump sums of money daily, which may decrease his loan payment days.â Tom Nook explained.Â
âWowâŠThatâs a lot of work for our representative.â She admitted.Â
âBut telling by their payments, itâs not impossible.â Tom admitted.Â
âAnd youâre charting their progress becauseâŠâ Isabelle asked next.Â
âBecause I like to know about their daily progress.â Tom admitted.Â
âAhâŠâ She muttered.Â
âIs that all you want to know?â Tom asked.Â
âWellâŠâ Isabelle muttered, thinking for a moment. âI do want to know more about you.â She admitted.Â
Tom nodded his head. âAsk away.â He replied.Â
âLikeâŠWhat are Timmy and Tommy like?â She asked.Â
Tom chuckled. âYou say you want to know about meâŠand yet, you ask me a question about the twins?â Tom mentioned.Â
Isabelle smiled and looked away. âMaybeâŠâ She teased.Â
Tom shook his head with a smile. âAlright.â Tom cleared his throat. âTimmy and TommyâŠtheyâre typical children. Outgoing, rambunctious, mischievous little tanuki children.â He told Isabelle.Â
âI see. What else?â She asked.Â
âTimmy is the most quick-witted little tycoon I have ever met.â Tom Nook admitted. âAnd Tommy is a sensitive mastermind. And together, they are the perfect duo to take over the Nooks corporation after I retire.â Tom explained. âI am very proud of the tanukiâs they have both become.â Tom Nook admitted.Â
Isabelle smiled and patted his shoulder. âIf they are wonderful kids like you tell meâŠthen just wait until theyâre fully grown!â Isabelle reacted.Â
Tom closed his eyes with a smile under his little snout. âDonât make me get ahead of myself, Isabelle. They wonât be pups forever.â Tom warned her.Â
âI wonât, I promise.â Isabelle replied happily.Â
Isabelle looked at Tom out of the corner of her eye. Tom spoke so highly of the twins, and it was adorable. But he rarely ever gave himself enough of the credit.Â
Tom could feel Isabelleâs gaze on him. â.....Do youâŠneed something?â Tom asked.Â
âAre you ticklish?â She asked absolutely out of nowhere.Â
Tomâs body froze in place. His typing paws had paused in place, and he had stared at the computer for a little longer than he was expecting. He didnât even have anything to say in response. The only thing he was able to really say was: âUuuuuhhhâŠwhy?â.Â
Isabelle smirked. âOh, just curious.â She replied.Â
Tom closed his laptop and turned to look at Isabelle. âI know you're planning something devious. Youâre not exactly stealthy.â Tom told her.Â
Isabelle giggled and poked his side a couple times. âIs that so?â She teased. âTell me, Tom: What exactly am I planning?â She asked.Â
Tom jumped and attempted to push her hands away. âIsaBELLE-â Tom squeaked as a claw poked him square in the ribs. âStOP-â He tried and failed to cover his sides. âPlease! We both have work to do!â Tom reacted.Â
Isabelle chuckled. âCome on, Tom. You havenât even answered me.â Isabelle told her.Â
Tom stared at her. âA-About what?â He asked.Â
âI asked you âAre you ticklish?â earlier.â She reminded him.Â
ââŠYou wanted an answer?â Tom asked for clarification.Â
Isabelle leaned her head back and laughed. âWhy else would I ask you?!â She reacted.Â
âI donât know!â Tom reacted.Â
âYou donât know if youâre ticklish or not?â She teased as she poked and scratched his furry sides.Â
âThatâs nOTWHAT-â Tom threw his head back. âBAHAHA-?!â He reacted, surprised by his own cackle.Â
âI think youâre very ticklish!â She declared. âAnd personallyâŠâ She shoved her paws into his armpits with pure excitement on her face. âI think you need a break from work.â She told him.Â
Tom threw himself against the back of his chair and cackled rather hysterically. âHAHAHAHAhahaha!â He squeezed his eyes shut, showing off a few of his eye wrinkles as he wiggled around in an unintentionally aggressive manner. âIHIHISABEHEHEHELLE PLEHEHEHEASE!â He yelled.Â
âGoodness, youâre louder than I thought youâd be!â She reacted.Â
âSHUHUHUHUSHHH!â Tom yelled back.Â
âBut shushing wouldnât be as fun! And you know this.â Isabelle replied confidently.
Tom attempted to curl up similarly to how Mayor Tortimer wouldâve curled up into his shell.Â
âTrying to hide from me?â Isabelle teased before moving her paws to his neck. âWell I hate to break it to you, but youâre not going anywhere.â She declared proudly.Â
Tom gasped and widened his eyes. Oh NO! âP-PLEASENO-NOT THERE!â He pleaded.Â
Isabelle smirked. âNot where? Not here?â She poked his neck. âNot this sensitive neck right here?â She scritched his neck insanely gently. âNot this exposed, fluffy little neck?â She kept teasing in a voice only her twin brother wouldâve heard.Â
âNaaaAAAHAHAHA! EEEEEEHEEEHEEEHEEEHEEHEE!â Tom screeched and squealed.Â
Isabelle was thrown off by this reaction at first. Isabelle and Tom had been friends for ages by this point. So seeing a serious businessman completely lose control of himself, was so out of character! Tom had always tried to present himself as a reserved, charismatic businessman. So it was almost shocking to see him squealing and losing his composure! Is this the same person?! Whereâs the proof? How can we be so sure that this is the same person?!
It didnât matter if Tomâs words were coherent or notâŠIsabelle seemed to have an answer for every single comment.Â
âPLEHEHEHEASE-â Tom pleaded.Â
âGoodness, youâre giggly! Does it really tickle that much?!â Isabelle asked.Â
Tom attempted to nod his head amidst his giggly laughter.Â
âHow ticklish?â She asked with a smirk as she fluttered her paws up his neck towards his chin.Â
âWAHAHAIT WAITWAIT-!â Tom squeaked and struggled to cover up his ultra sensitive chin.Â
âOn a scale of 1 to 10, how ticklish is your chin?â She asked curiously.Â
Tom gasped as her finger presented itself mere millimeters away from his chin. He knew that if Isabelle so much as touched his chin, it would be all over. He would lose all his composure, and surely die from the embarrassment alone! And all it would takeâŠwas a tiny, simple touch.
The claw finally touched downâŠbut it was only for a second. But that second was all it took for Tom Nook to disappear. The ticklish coworker she had been playing with in the town hall, had suddenly disappeared from her field of vision.Â
Isabelle widened her eyes and pulled her paw back. The desk chair that was seating the raccoon had become completely empty. What the- Where did Tom go?! Isabelle looked around the room, flabbergasted by his sudden disappearance. Did he teleport?! Thereâs no wayâŠno one can teleport like that. Not even the representative is capable of teleportation!Â
Suddenly, the back door opened, revealing an exhausted, slumped-over Tom Nook. He was holding a cup of water in his right paw, while leaning against the doorframe with weariness written all over his face. The man looked like he just ran a marathon.Â
âOh my gosh- Are you okay?!â Isabelle asked, running up and offering to help carry him. She gently grabbed his arm and tried to wrap it around her shoulders, so she could place part of his weight onto her.Â
But Tom didnât interpret her actions like that. He assumed that her actions were part of her new elaborate plan to tickle him all over again. So naturally, Tom doubled over and pulled away before falling down. Isabelle took his water cup and let him fall. Isabelle watched as Tom curled up into a little ball the moment his body hit the floor. He wasnât even able to stop the extra giggles from leaving his snout. It was somewhat adorable, and still quite out-of-character for the man.Â
Isabelle smiled and continued to watch as Tom sat himself up. When Tom reached for the water, Isabelle gave it to him. Tom drank the rest of the water in one big gulp, before huffing. âAre you happy with yourself?â He asked, looking up at Isabelle with a loopy smile.Â
Isabelleâs heart dropped for only a second. Did she do something drastic?! Were her actions out of line?!Â
âŠbut the Shih Tzu felt immediate relief the moment she saw Tomâs crooked smile. Everything seemed to be okay. He wasnât angry at herâŠand she was thankful for that.Â
Tom got up onto his feet and got himself some more water from the water jug. âWhat time is it?â Tom asked.Â
Isabelle looked over at the analog clock up on the wall. âIt isâŠ10 to 5.â Isabelle said.Â
Tom hummed and speed-walked to his desk. âI promised the boys I would make them fish and chips for dinner.â He admitted.Â
Isabelle raised an eyebrow. âAnd you have the time to do that?â she asked.Â
âI will as soon as I leave.â Tom replied.Â
Isabelle laughed and watched as Tom closed the laptop and put his book away. Then, he pulled out his Nook Phone. âThat must be the boys.â He said before picking up the phone. âHello?â He said.Â
Isabelle turned her ear to the right, to attempt to hear what the boys were saying to him.Â
âIâm on my way now, Timmy. Alright?â He told him.Â
Isabelle smiled as she closed her notebook and schedule.
âI know my voice sounds groggy, but thatâs none of your concern.â Tom told them.Â
Isabelle looked up, and giggled silently into her paw. Unlike the boys, she knew EXACTLY why Tomâs voice was a little raspy.Â
âAlright, Iâll see you in a few minutes. Bye.â He said, before hanging up. âAlright. Thatâs my cue to leave.â He told Isabelle. âSee you in an hour, Isabelle.âÂ
âBye Tom!â Isabelle replied, waving until the double doors closed.Â
