đ âShowtime Comfortâ
(Ler!Devan | Lee!Dandy)
The backstage lights flickered faintly, their hum mixing with the muffled cheers of the crowd beyond the curtain. Props were scattered everywhereâconfetti cannons, stage cards, spare microphonesâbut in the middle of it all, Dandy sat on a crate, slumped and silent.
The flamboyant performerâs usual shine was gone. His hat lay in his lap, his sleeves rumpled, and the glow in his eyes was dim.
He let out a shaky sigh. âThey keep tellinâ me to âwow the crowd,â Devan,â he murmured, voice cracking a little. âArthur says I gotta âshine brighter,â and Delilahâshe just keeps smilinâ and sayinâ Iâm fine, but I can tell sheâs not happy. I canât even tell if Iâm doinâ good anymoreâŠâ
Devan stood nearby, adjusting his white vest absently as he listened. His brow softened, a rare break from his usual composed demeanor.
âDandy,â he said gently, crouching down to eye level. âYouâre you. Thatâs what everyone loves. Not because youâre perfect, but because youâre you.â
Dandy gave a small, humorless laugh. âHeh⊠I donât feel like âmeâ right now. I feel like some broken toy thatâs just makinâ noise.â
Devanâs expression flickered with sympathyâthen a tiny spark of mischief. âA broken toy, huh? âŠMaybe I can fix that.â
Dandy blinked. âHuh? Whaââ
Before he could react, Devanâs hand reached out and gently squeezed Dandyâs side.
âEEPâ!!â Dandy jolted, a startled squeak bursting out of him. âW-WAHAHAIT!! Whahatâre youâhEHEHEHEHEHEE!!â
Devanâs calm, knowing smile grew as he lightly scribbled at Dandyâs ribs with practiced precision. âThere you are. I missed that sound.â
âDEHEHEHEVAN, DOHOHONâTâ!!â
âOh, I think I will,â Devan teased softly, his tone full of warmth rather than mockery. âYou were lookinâ way too serious. We canât have the star of the show all gloomy, can we?â
âTHIHIHISâIS NOHOHOTâ!! FAHAHAIR!!â Dandy squealed, his face flushing bright pink.
âFair?â Devan chuckled, moving his hands up to poke gently under Dandyâs chin and around his neck. âWho said anything about fair, sunshine?â
Dandy kicked weakly, laughter spilling out in high, hiccupy bursts that made Devanâs grin widen just a little more. It wasnât loud, playful chaosâthis was soft, grounding laughter, the kind that melted away tension like sugar in tea.
âDehehevanâ! I cahahahanâtâ!!â
âShhh.â Devan slowed his hands to a gentle flutter along Dandyâs shoulders, voice low and kind. âYou can laugh, Dandy. You need to.â
And he did.
The giggles came easier nowâless frantic, more free. Dandy leaned against him, still shaking with quiet laughter, but the tightness in his chest had eased.
When Devan finally stopped, Dandy was smiling againâgenuinely this time. He wiped at his eyes, still giggling softly.
âY-youâre terrible,â he sniffed.
Devan smirked. âAnd youâre radiant again.â
ââŠYou really think so?â
âI know so.â Devan straightened his tie, helping Dandy to his feet. âThe crowdâs waitinâ for that smile, you know.â
Dandy chuckled, adjusting his hat and taking a deep breath. âHeh⊠guess I shouldnât keep âem waitinâ, huh?â
Devan nodded, patting his back. âThatâs the spirit.â
As Dandy stepped toward the stage lights, he turned to grin at him. âHey, Devan?â
âMm?â
âIf I knock âem dead out there⊠Iâm blaming you for the warm-up.â
Devanâs grin turned wry. âDeal.â
And as the curtain rose, the familiar energy returned to Dandyâs eyesâsparkling, bright, and alive againâall thanks to a quiet moment, a few gentle laughs, and the calm care of one steadfast friend backstage. đđ
