Written from Graceâs POV
Lee!Grace, ler!stratt, ler!carl
ââ
The train rattles endlessly through the Danish countryside as I type away on my laptop. One thing I hadnât anticipated about joining the Petrova Taskforce was all the emails. You know that meme, I became important at work and itâs ruining my life? Yeah.
I hit send and refresh the page. Hmm. I frown and refresh it again. No new emails. Thatâs weird. Itâs been⌠ages since Iâve had no new emailsâeven as a teacher, there was a seemingly infinite supply of angry parents in my inbox.
I take a moment to look around me. The train car is emptyâa privilege of being with the woman who Is The Government, I guess. Speaking of which, sheâs sitting on my right, gazing out the window. I watch her face for a minute as rolling fields pass in our view. Sheâs not doing any work either, her laptop abandoned on the seats across from us with the neon-colored screensaver spinning across it.Â
On my left is Carl. I hadnât noticed he was sitting next to me. Usually he chooses a seat farther away, but the car is small. Or maybe he just likes us. Heh.
Come to think of it, this whole train ride is rather strange. We have the entire military (yes, all of them) at our disposal with more jets and planes and cars than we could ever use, but weâre sitting on a train for 5 hours just to get to an appointment with an expert. Why the sudden lack of efficiency? Itâs not like Stratt.Â
I slump in my seat as I ponder this question, sliding down slightly. My sweater bunches, riding up where my back meets the seat and driving my collar up to my chin. I purse my lips, using my precious free will and free time to let my brain be, well, dumb. I donât notice the amused glance Stratt and Carl exchange over my head.Â
After a few minutes of further silence, Carl clears his throat. I glance up at him over my glasses and raise my eyebrows slightly.Â
âWhat⌠What are you thinking about, Dr. Grace?â Carl asks, thinly-veiled amusement in his voice.Â
I shrug, worsening the shirt-bunching-up situation. I glance down slightly to make sure Iâm decentâmy tummy isnât exposed, only a hint of my sides and back ribs, so Iâm fine. âNothing,â I reply.
Carl gives me a skeptical look.Â
âWhat? I actually am thinking about nothing,â I reply.Â
He smirks slightly at my cheekiness. I see his hand twitch, hesitate, and then something in his eyes hardens into resolve. Before I can process what that means, Carlâs thumb is jabbed into my side where my shirt rode up.Â
I let out a very unmanly yelp and sit up straight, yanking my shirt down. I pretend not to hear the choked and muffled noise of amusement from Stratt next to me and I pretend not to see the amused look they share over my head (again). Mercifully, neither of them question my reaction.
âI wasnât lying,â I say defensively. My voice is slightly high-pitched, dang it. âI was thinking about nothing. Or, how weâre doing nothing right now. Which is weird! Objectively. Yâknow. Weâre always soâŚâ I gesture vaguely, âbusy.â
Stratt finally speaks up. âSo you think youâre being underworked, Dr. Grace?âÂ
Thereâs something in her tone I canât place, something in her eyes that I canât figure out. I think sheâs⌠teasing me? Stratt? Teasing me?
âI- wha- no,â I say, flustered. âN-not necessarily.â
âIâm hearing heâs underworked,â Carl says to Stratt, an air of performance in his voice.Â
âMm, yes, thatâs what Iâm hearing as wellâŚâ Stratt muses.Â
âGuys?â I say, chuckling nervously.
âI have just the thing,â Carl says.Â
Before I can process what that means, Carlâs big, strong hand is tweaking my side. I squeak and flinch, my body twisting away from his hand until Iâm practically in Strattâs lap. âCarl!â I yelp.
Heâs grinning. Motherfluffer. âI didnât know you were so ticklish, Dr. Grace.â
âI- Iâm not,â I deny vehemently. âY-you just surprised me.âÂ
âTwice?â Stratt chimes in. I make a very intelligent grumbling noise in reply, covering my reddening face.
Unfortunately this blinds me to the shared look of mischief between Stratt and Carl, who nod once and then start tickling me. In. Earnest.
I absolutely explode with sound, somewhere between a laugh and a surprised squawk. âNo- NO! Come ohohohon- GUYS!â Strattâs nimble fingers worm their way under my sweater and the buttoned shirt underneath, scribbling diligently at my tummy. Carl continues the pinching and tweaking motions up my sides. Iâm nearly hysterical.Â
âWhatâs that, Grace?â Stratt muses calmly. âI canât hear you. Youâre going to have to use your words.â
âNoho- NOHOHOHO⌠Donât use my ohohown exprehehessions on me!â I squeal. Itâs a very masculine, put-together squealâuh, what do my students say?âTrust.
I try to curl my knees to my chest and armadillo my way out of this one, but Carl puts a stop to that pretty quick by pinning my knees down with his free hand. He also squeezes my knees and thighs a few times, coaxing a few snorts out of me. Stratt actually coos at my reaction, which if I wasnât being tickled to death I would find shocking.
My laughter goes silent when Stratt sticks a finger in my bellybutton and swirls it around. I have a death grip on her wrist, but I canât find the strength to push her away. My brain isnât letting me. Traitor. I squeeze my eyes shut so I donât have to look at the smug grins on their faces.
She stops, though, mercifully. Carl takes the hint and reduces his awful squeezing along my sides. I get about 20 seconds to breathe before Strattâs hands wander up under my arms for a grand finale.Â
âOh- Christmas Eve!â I yelp. My eyes shoot open and my elbows tighten to my sides, trapping her hands.Â
âOh, Iâm stuck,â Stratt says, her bottom lip sticking out slightly in a faux-pout.Â
âN-nahano, youâre not stuhuck, just gehehet out-â
âSheâs trying,â Carl adds unhelpfully as Stratt wiggles her fingers around in earnest, right into the hollows of my armpits. Iâm wheezing. Thank God sheâs not doing this under my shirt, or Iâd have actually died.
âI think we have a hostage situation,â Stratt remarks, changing technique to scratch her nails lightly up, down, up, down⌠Itâs maddening. Fresh rounds of giggles burst out of me at every motion of her fingers.
âDonât worry, backup is on the way,â Carl says, bringing his walkie-talkie to his mouth to mime calling for help. Itâs not like I receive much help, because then heâs pulling up my shirt and digging one hand, poised like a claw, into my lower belly.Â
Iâve always had a slightly soft stomachâno matter how much I work out or ride my bike to work, thereâs always a little bit of pudge at the very bottom of my belly under the abs Iâd worked hard to maintain. And, of course, Carl abuses this feature. Ruthlessly. His fingers vibrate into the soft skin, making me squeal and my arms loosen to grab at his hands. This action frees Strattâs hands (where they were never really trapped, letâs be honest). As soon as Stratt is free, they both stop.Â
I suck in greedy lungfuls of air. Vaguely, I process that thereâs moistness at the corners of my eyes from laughing too hard. I can also vaguely sense that theyâre both smiling at me. I tuck my knees to my chest, hide my face, and let out an embarrassed groan. âNe-never do that again.â
âNo promises,â Stratt says.Â
âOkay, Iâm asking you againâam I expendable? Is that why youâre keeping me around? Because I almost just diedââ
âSo dramatic,â Stratt murmurs, cutting me off. Sheâs smiling wider than Iâve ever seen her smile. I stop my flustered rambling, just looking at her smile in awe. I glance the other way to Carl, whoâs sporting a similar grin.
OKEY SO likeâ it would be so silly to see more lee!Grace and ler!Stratt or ler!Carl because I feel like it's so underrated WUGH

Reader is a worrywart and Grace and Carl only see one solution.Â
âââ
âGrace?â I call out anxiously. âGrace, I messed upâŚâ
The scientist pokes his head around the side of the big, makeshift model-box we had made to simulate astrophage migration to Venus. In my periphery I see Carl become alert at my anxious tone. âWhatâs wrong?â Grace asks.Â
âI- I lost the astrophage,â I say, chewing my lip.Â
âWhat do you mean, you lost it?â He asks.Â
âLike, they moved off the slide. Theyâre somewhere in the box.â My lip starts to bleed.Â
âOkay⌠okay,â Grace says slowly. âOkay. Well. We still have them inside the box. So.â
âCould be worse?â Carl pipes up.Â
âIâm so sorry,â I stammer.Â
âStop apologizing,â Grace says absentmindedly. âHow do we fix itâŚmaybe⌠put the box in a box?â
I look around. âWhat? What bigger boxââ
Carl points silently at the lab within the warehouse.Â
Grace snaps his fingers. âBingo.â
Itâs a whole operation to get the astrophage out. Carl and the other security people help us block all light out of the lab. Then we put our box simulation inside the lab. Grace goes in and Carl and I hold our breaths as Grace retrieves the astrophage. The tang of iron floods my tongue as I worry my bottom lip even further between my teeth.Â
Carl and Grace get swept up in the excitement of the moment as we discover that the astrophage successfully bred inside the container. I stand there, the activity and excitement swirling around me as Strattâs people come to collect us. Grace, Carl, and I are shuttled through about 15 modes of transportation to get to Strattâs Vat, a giant carrier ship swarming with scientific activity.Â
Later in the day, Grace and I finally have a moment of peace in our new lab. Stratt had sort of kidnapped us permanently for Project Hail Mary. Itâs a lot to take in. Iâd moved on from chewing my lip to picking at my cuticles, which are now a bloody mess.
Carl is the first to notice. Iâm watching them move a piece of heavy lab equipment, and when theyâre done, Carl forcibly removes my hand from the other to stop me from picking.Â
âWhatâs up with you?â Carl asks. Grace stops what heâs doing.Â
âIâm fine,â I say. Itâs not very convincing.Â
Grace walks over and puts his hands on his hips. He looks at me over the rims of his glasses. âTell us whatâs wrong.â
âI- itâs nothing. I just feel underqualified.â
Grace gives me a skeptical look. âIâm serious. Itâs been so⌠busy on this carrier. Everyone seems to know who they are and where theyâre going. And- and I made that stupid mistake with the astrophage earlierâŚâ
âYour stupid mistake helped us figure out how astrophage, yâknow, do the deed,â Grace says. I can tell heâs trying to make me smile. âAnd it wasnât just you who didnât realize they would move off the slide.â
âOkay,â I say, unconvinced.Â
Weâre at an impasse. Grace stares at me, eyebrows raised, as if calling me out on my bullshit. Carl looks between us, eyeing us warily. Itâd be comical if I wasnât being scrutinized.Â
âListen,â Carl says, breaking the silence. Graceâs and my head swivels to him. âThis carrier is full of very confident, very arrogant, and very smart people. You two are the most humble smart people on this ship.â Then, to me: âWill you stop being stupid and feel competent already?â
Iâm slightly shocked. Iâm not sure if Iâve ever heard Carl speak that many words to me before. âI- okay,â I stammer, a little more convincingly this time.Â
âSeriously? All it takes is Carl?â Grace mumbles. Carl and I both chuckle slightly at his petty complaint. Carl starts to turn away, seeing his mission as complete, but Grace speaks up first.Â
âNuh uh. Weâre not done here until youâre smiling. Or laughing. Preferably both.â
I let out a slight huff of a laugh. âWhat?â
Grace opens his arms wide as if inviting me for a hug. Carlâs mouth ticks up at one corner in a slight smile. I fidget, stammer out a few confused mutterings, and then step closer for a hug. I grunt softly as Grace squeezes me tightly.Â
Just as I start to relax into the hug, I feel something prodding up my sides. Fingers. Definitely fingers. âGraceââ
âShh,â he shushes me. âResistance is futile.â
âWhat- nohoho- Grace. Câmonââ I whine, struggling slightly. Damn him and his stupid biceps.Â
âWait, are you ticklingââ Carl cuts in, but heâs interrupted by a loud squeal that erupts from my mouth before I can stop it.Â
âOh, geez, I got a squirmer on my hands,â Grace teases nonchalantly. I feel my world tilt as he pulls me down with him onto a bench.Â
âSure seems like it,â Carl remarks, barely able to disguise the humor in his voice.Â
âLet me gohohoâŚGrace, Iâm FIHIHINE, I donât need thihihisââÂ
Grace doesnât reply. He just flips me around to sit properly in his lapâhow is he maneuvering me so easily?âwhich exposes a lot more of my tickle spots. I kick out as he digs into my tummy with the hand thatâs not holding me in place. Loud cackles fill the lab.Â
I feel his chin dig into my trapezius so he can murmur in my ear, âIs this helping? Are you feeling better? Hmm?âÂ
I ignore him. âCarl- hehehelp me, God damn it!!â I shriek.Â
Carl shrugs. âSorry, kid. I think the tickle monsterâs got you.â
âWhat- nohoho donât say it like thahahatâŚâ
âLike what?â Grace asks, slipping his hands under my shirt so he can scribble gently at my ribs. âThe tickle monster?â I cover my face in embarrassment. âOh, you donât like that, huh?â He asks, and I can hear the grin in his voice.Â
I shake my head desperately. âAww,â he coos. âThatâs too bad, because the tickle monsterâs here⌠and heâs gonna get youâŚâÂ
âNo!!â I protest. My face is so red. I nearly scream when Grace pinches and massages at the muscle that connects my ribs and armpitsâhe knows human anatomy very well, if Iâd ever doubted that. Carl laughs openly at Graceâs shenanigans.Â
âTickle monster is feeling hungry,â Grace declares before he sticks his face in my neck and nuzzles. âFUCK!!â I squeal, pushing at his head and twisting in all sorts of directions to try to free myself. âNo- nohohot hungry- GETOUTGETOUT!! GRAHAHACE- thereâs literally Skihihitlles over thehehere! StohohopâŚâ
Carlâs smiling ear to ear at the display. âI donât know if Iâve ever seen someone so ticklish,â he muses, stepping closer. My eyes are squeezed shut in laughter so I have no warning for when his hand makes a claw and squeezes right into the middle of my belly. I struggle a little harder, but between the two men, I have no hope of getting out. I can tell theyâre both being gentle with me, though, which only makes my cheeks redder.Â
âPleasepleaseplease guys I cahahanâtâŚâ I whine.Â
Grace moves his hands up to my armpits, wiggling his fingers gently enough to be maddening but not to make me scream. âCanât what?â He asks.Â
âBut isnât this so much fun? Iâm having a great time,â Grace teases. âTickle monster hasnât had his fill yet.â
âTickle monster is gonna actually kill me!â I outburst.Â
Both Grace and Carl laugh at that. Carl stops completely and Grace keeps me on his lap, fingers in my armpits, until I can breathe normally again. When he stops and lets me go, Iâm so embarrassed I donât know what to do with myself. I go straight to the mess of experiments weâd left earlier and start cleaning up, looking to keep my hands busy.Â
âHeeey, donât be like that,â Grace says, trailing after me. He leans against the table next to me. âThe point was not to embarrass you.â
I donât reply. âCâmon,â Grace says, poking me a few times. He looks gratified when I squirm for him. âIt was cute. Stop stressing.â
I give him a flustered look. âCute?â
âYes,â Grace says. He opens his mouth again as if to say something more, but decides against it. Probably to avoid embarrassing me more.Â
âOkay,â I finally say, no less embarrassed. âIâll stop stressing.âÂ
Carl and Grace return to moving lab machinery around. I catch bits of their conversation:
