          claudia  has  dreamed  of  how  she’d  handle  this  moment  since  she  reentered  the  world .     different  plans  and  strategies  and  scenarios  have  raced  through  her  head  as  she  tries  to  sleep ,  knowing  that  she  will ,  one  day ,  see  him  again  -- she  has  to .     learning  that  he  had  returned  to  lestat ,  their  captor ,  their  gaoler ,  had  stung  more  than  she  had  anticipated ,  but  she’s  allowed  herself  to  feel  it ,  to  ache .     but  now ,  standing  in  front  of  him ,  any  planning  she  had  done  flies  away ,  replaced  only  with  feeling ,  with  the  human  pain  known  as  emotion .     every  inch  of  her  small  body  goes  stiff ,  even  as  her  muscles  scream  to  run  to  him ,  to  throw  her  arms  around  him ,  to  claim  him  as  her  own  once  again .     but . . . is  he  her  own ?     she  once  knew  the  answer  to  that  question  in  less  than  a  second ,  but  now . . . now  she  doesn’t  know .     her  mouth  hesitatingly  opens  to  speak ,  trembles ,  trembles -- and  closes  again ,  closes  as  blood  tears  tint  her  vision  with  red ,  obscuring  her  view  of  the  only  person  she’s  ever  wanted  to  see .     she’s  lost  in  the  moment ,  lost  in  her  thoughts ,  lost  in  what  to  do  -- but  at  least  he’s  there .

          those  words  from  louis ,  so  often  a  comfort  to  her ,  don’t  hit  home  quite  the  same  this  time  --  not  when  she  knows  them  to  be  untrue .     not  because  she  accuses  louis  of  lying  to  her  --  no ,  she  knows  that  he  would  never  do  such  a  thing .     but  because  the  things  armand  said  to  her ,  the  things  armand  showed  her  within  her  own  mind ,  had  told  her  a  very  different  story ,  one  with  a  progression  that  will  leave  her  stranded  and  alone .     these  thoughts  bring  panic  to  her  cold ,  dark  heart ,  reinvigorating  it  only  to  harm  it .     her  fingers  begin  to  shake  by  her  sides ,  and  she  balls  them  into  fists  to  hide  that  fact .          “  you  will ,  i  know  you  will  --  you’ll  go  to  him ,  and  i’ll  be . . . i’ll  be  alone .  ”          her  voice  nearly  breaks  on  her  last  word ,  and  she  curses  herself  for  her  weakness .     her  anger  mounts ,  at  the  situation ,  at  the  world ,  at  the  existence  she  was  forced  into ,  and  her  next  words  are  snapped .          “  you  will  have  a  new  companion ,  and  you  must  make  me  mine .  ”

                    𝐴  𝐺𝐸𝑁𝑇𝐿𝐸  𝐸𝑋𝐻𝐴𝐿𝐸 ,  𝐻𝐸𝐴𝐷  𝐿𝐸𝐴𝑁𝐼𝑁𝐺  against  father’s  jacketed  arm .          “  you  are  eternally  feeling  guilty  for  one  thing  or  another ,  louis ,  ”          she  admonishes  gently ,  glassy  eyes  closing  for  a  long  second .          “  it  is  endearing ,  of  course .  ”          as  everything  louis  does ,  has  ever  done ,  is .     nothing  louis  has  done ,  has  ever  done ,  could  anger  her  --  how  could  it ,  when  she  loves  him  so  dearly ?     she  had  realized  long  ago  that ,  if  she  couldn’t  hate  him  for  the  greatest  betrayal  he  had  committed  in  his  part  of  her  creation ,  she  could  hate  him  for  nothing .     he  could  stab  her  through  the  heart  and  she  would  wrap  her  hand  around  his  on  the  hilt ,  holding  his  hand  one  final  time .          “  it  is  not  your  fault ,  you  know .  ”          a  momentary  pause ,  her  chin  pressing  against  his  arm  to  be  able  to  look  up  at  his  face .          “  nothing  to  be  guilty  over ,  nothing  to  hold  onto  as  you  have ,  as  you  always  do .  ”          a  smile  given ,  pointed  teeth  on  full  display ,  but  with  louis  it  is  not  a  threat ,  never  a  threat  --  a  loving  look ,  a  reminder  of  what  they  are ,  what  they  will  always  be .

                    she  makes  a  noncommittal  noise ,  settling  down  into  his  coffin  beside  him .     the  ship  rocks  below  them ,  a  lulling  motion ,  a  second  constant  companion  other  than  her  father .          “  it  depends  on  your  definition  of  world ,  i  suppose ,  ”          she  muses ,  small  fingers  reaching  out  to  wrap  in  louis’  hair .          “  my  world  has  never  been  big ,  louis ,  not  until  now .     though  it  has  certainly  been  mean .  ”          a  coy  smile  spreads  on  her  lips ,  thoughts  on  the  way  that  she  --  she !  --  had  played  a  significant  role  in  her  own  world  opening ,  had  been  an  agent  of  change  --  the  princess  stabbing  the  dragon ,  with  the  knight  nearby  to  set  the  body  alight .          “  will  you  do  it  with  me ,  hm ?  ”          she  turns  onto  her  side ,  to  be  able  to  look  into  the  deep  green  pools  of  louis’  sad  eyes .          “  will  you  laugh  at  the  world  by  my  side ,  every  day ,  as  we  explore  it  together ?  ”
