In an extremely unfortunate incident, which also highlights the urgent need to cover open wells in Maharashtra - a pregnant #Leopard who was rescued from a 40-feet deep well from Borwadi village, Junnar district by team #WildlifeSOS passed away few hours later due to severe stress & internal bleeding.
If you haven't before, please take a minute to sign our #petition urging concerned authorities to cover or fence off open wells in India before more such innocent lives are lost; http://bit.ly/2mfbfYj
In a shocking repeat incident, a female #Leopard was forced to abandon its baby in a sugarcane field by the local villagers. Several attempts were made by the Forest Dept. to reunite the lost cub with its mother; however, the leopard failed to return to the site in search for her missing cub. The 10 week old Leopard cub was rescued and is currently in its new home at the #ManikdohLeopardRescueCenter. At the #WildlifeSOS #ManikdohLeopardRescueCenter, we have more than 30 leopards under our care. These leopards have been rescued from various man-animal conflict situations for eg. Orphaned as cubs, needing to be fostered, entered a village and gotten injured, etc. Our attempt is to nurture these animals till they are fit to be released back into the wild, however when this is not possible we provide them lifetime care at our center where we encourage these animals to display natural behavior. With a goal to help people co-exist with #Leopards with increased tolerance and to diminish fears that have manifested due to ignorance and misconceptions about these magnificent creatures we have also been conducting workshops, seminars & awareness campaigns around affected areas in #Maharashtra, India.
#Shivani was just 3 months old when she was discovered from a sugarcane field in Belha Village, Maharashtra, in 2009. Possibly separated from her mother, the tiny helpless cub was alone, starving and unprotected when we brought her into our care. The day of her rescue, this unlucky cub lost a paw to an unfortunate accident- forcing her to adapt to life with just three limbs. But, under the dedicated care of the staff at the#ManikdohLeopardRescueCenter, Shivani’s strong, fighting spirit helped her become the independent, amazing animal she is today!

Meet Gul! Almost 17 years old, she is one of the most popular leopards at the #ManikdohLeopardRescueCentre in Maharashtra. Gul was rescued in 2003, after her desperate search for food led her to stray into a landscape overpopulated with hostile humans. This spotted cat is most active in the early hours of the morning and she begins her day by climbing on to platforms and stretching herself.
