I love what one of your anonymous commenters picked up on in the Lackadaisy pilot. The aspect I love the most, is the sound of the oncoming freight train worked into the accompanying music during Rockyās recital. You can hear the horn and the sound of the wheels against the tracks at various points. Itās not an anxiety inducing buildup, but it hints that the train IS comingā¦ and soon. Thatās such a fantastic detail and brilliant manipulation of sound.

One of the things that constantly impresses me about the Lackadaisy pilot, something I'm trying to learn from as I'm working on my own thing, is how it never lets a moment go to waste...how it's always putting the setting to work. We hear the distant train coming and there are several layers of reasons why.
It adds to the industrial, old time atmosphere and the view of the city at night. It gives Rocky's vantage point on the tracks a feeling of being more than just a neat aesthetic choice, but something being purposeful and alive.
Like you said, it adds a sense of danger, both real and metaphorical. It's not here yet, but it will be soon.
It tells us that Rocky's the type of character who can play violin on the train tracks and not care that he can hear the train coming.
The brilliant sound, the setting, the story, it all works together. It's just so intelligently done, and it's brilliant.
I was alerted to an anonymous person mentioning one of my characters in one of your asks, claiming that they thought Alastor may have been inspired in part by said character. I just wanted to state that, although they share very similar traits (red, spiky hair, a sharp smile and evil countenance), I donāt think thatās the case. And as far as Iām aware from my own interactions with Vivienne in the past (forgive me, Iām old now), she lead a very isolated existence within her own Zoophobia fandom. I donāt think she was engaged enough within the furry fandom to have noticed my artwork at all to be honest. At least, thatās what I tell myself.
I just wanted to say that I donāt bear any grudge, because this has been mentioned several times before, but I donāt generally get involved in online drama and I donāt really think itās the case. Itās really kind that people still remember my characters though, and defend my work in that way.
Also, hey! I read your blog from time to time. I got into reading critical blogs after people started putting Lackadaisy into the same bucket as Vivienneās projects, which doesnāt sit too well with me. Tracy is an old artist friend and to me thereās no comparison other than theyāre both indie projects. Again, Lackadaisy existed long before Hazbin Hotel, so this is all very surreal. We (Tracy and I), both come from the āearly daysā of the online art world and all the hysterics of the āart sceneā of today areā¦ something to behold. For sure!
Thanks for the clarification! I didn't engage with the Zoophobia fandom at all or even realize Zoophobia was a thing, and god knows history gets muddled, so stories from people who were there are invaluable.
Also, has it really been that long since Lackadaisy began? Time marches on.
Yes, itās amazing isnāt it? Tracy halted work on her comic while focusing on the animated pilot (originally not intended as such), and I think people just kind ofā¦ forgot about it? And younger people didnāt seem to know it existed at all. Back on Foxprints (Tracyās first forum), we always said that the Lackadaisy characters would just suit animation perfectly. Her style was seemingly ready-made for that method of storytelling. Every character is so unique.
Iām so glad that Lackadaisy is breathing new life through such a well-loved art form (Not that webcomics arenāt well-loved too! Iām still old school on that front. I melt over a beautifully crafted webcomic - storyline and artwork combined!) š
I think it's interesting that as long as I've been aware of Lackadaisy and especially now that it's got an animated pilot, I've known more than a handful of people who couldn't tell you if you promised them a million dollars who created Lackadaisy. They know the name, the style, what it's about, the characters, but not the creator. I guess in a way that's sad, but I think it also speaks volumes to the kind of work Lackadaisy is.
Tracy's got an intensely devoted following and I'm sure some of them would follow her across the world to start an isolated farming community if she asked them to, but she doesn't act like it. She just knows her craft, does what she does, and does it very well.
