so he's a Jedi Investigator in sw right. so here he's a covert specialist turned private/corpo investigator, which basically amounts to data extraction, corporate theft and espionage, etc etc
he grew up in a company town a long way from Night City, raised by dad + neighbors, gained a healthy resentment of corps but also clear understanding that "making it" means trading morals/ethics for the security of working for one. this will persist even when he moves to NC and gets out from under the thumb of the corp that owned his hometown
anyway. dad dies, debt left behind, family friend moves Bastra to Watson. goal of paying down debt and getting stable enough to support himself. started rubbing elbows with suits and eventually lands a job with a data acquisition corp
he starts in security, ends up specializing in covert ops. covert ops risky! but he's good at infil/exfil and undercover work. does a lot of stealing data from other corps. job inevitably goes wrong, he loses his position
stint in corporate custody in there
in the interest of not pledging loyalty of another corp, he transitions to contract work. develops a rep for expediency and discretion. he's eventually scouted by Takemura to take on a test job for Arasaka. if he passes, they'll bring him back
something about the double edged sword of earning the privilege to work for Arasaka but then you have to work for Arasaka,,,, an opportunity you can't really say no to,,,,
part of the appeal of working all those corp contracts is that they free him up to take on individual cases from time to time at a significantly discounted rate, and he does so as often as he's able. very Very community oriented. Watson is all tied up in his identity, though he gives the gangs as much space as he feasibly can. the occasional run in is inevitable
what else
he keeps the core of his character, of course. still a little standoffish, a little stiff, a little short-tempered. less formal than in sw, more willing to cause problems on purpose. still charming when he wants to be and perfectly able to be scary when the need arises
I always try to make ocs fit the context I put them in, especially when I'm pulling them out of their original fandom, so little tweaks just come with the territory. he loses his affinity for swordsmanship, for example, but he's damn good at CQC and a crackshot
in my heart, everyone who's anyone knows Mama Welles. so he's semi-regular at El Coyote Cojo, unsuccessfully batting eyes at Pepe
Robert Rainwater is his go-to ripperdoc, part because he's talented, part because they antagonize each other to no end. they are besties
Coach Fred ropes him into his boxing club, but he isn't a frequent participant
Viktor Vektor is a neighborhood staple, obviously. not his primary 'doc, but a good resource for the latest chrome or a beer after hours
his work with Arasaka comes with a netrunner assigned to shadow him. this netrunner is a massive pain in his ass, especially since this netrunner doesn't seem to know shit about the city his corp has a stranglehold on. who cares if this netrunner is easy on the eyes. certainly not Bastra

he very sincerely admired Vik's boxing career. never was much of a boxer himself but man That Shit Was Cool
he used to insist that "Eyes" was just a nickname he didn't ask for, or even a persona he used to compartmentalize. it didn't take long before he wound up more "Eyes" than "Des", even (especially) to himself
he isn't particularly afraid of death, but he's terrified of cyberpsychosis. maybe because he knows he's right on the cusp, might even be past the threshold, but he'll cling to whatever mental stability he has left with teeth and nails
