Post-traumatic stress disorder is a mental disorder that occurs in individuals upon experiencing traumatic events. Events such as severe disasters or sexual, physical, and mental abuse may trigger PTSD, but it is mostly commonly found in victims returning from war. While reading “Slaughterhouse Five,” the reader becomes introduced to many traumatic events with the main character, Billy Pilgrim, who seems to share parallels with author, Kurt Vonnegut. During World War II, it was a common practice for young males to become drafted into the war, which is how Billy Pilgrim became involved with it at the age of 21, while Vonnegut volunteered to fight in the same war in 1944 at age 22. Both Vonnegut and Pilgrim shared identical war experiences such as being stationed in Europe, being present for the Battle of The Bulge, and the Bombing of Dresden; where they both became captured and held as prisoners of war. These events, in which Vonnegut had experienced firsthand, were written with vivid details in order to be addressed as plots for the main character, Billy Pilgrim. Although it had never been confirmed in the novel, the leading character evidently suffered from PTSD, which gave Vonnegut reason to create Billy as a method of coping with his own personal disorder.
The symptoms of this syndrome included features such as fixation on the trauma, constriction of personality functioning and atypical dream life

The average soldier returning from war would typically be able to live a normal lifestyle but those living with severe post-traumatic stress disorder cannot handle the average life with their mental capabilities. Billy Pilgrim’s PTSD is not severe in the sense of physically expressing his disorder, but instead he uses his mind to escape from the reality that he has to live with. Billy finds himself abducted several times by aliens from the planet Tralfamadore. After becoming a constant victim of these aliens, they decide to permanently capture him and to hold him in a habitat specifically designed for humans. Earlier in the book it is revealed that he holds an attraction to a pornographic star, Montana Wildhack, which he sees on the cover of a magazine in the city. One day while in his habitat, the aliens reveal a new friend to enter his “home” which turns out to be Montana Wildhack. His subconscious attraction to Wildhack allowed himself to make his ideal woman to stay isolated with him as he if forced to live there. When Billy returns to planet Earth, he attempts to convince his daughter that what he experienced was reality, yet no one believes him because it seems to be a hallucination in which he uses to cope with his disorder.
