Religion: Is it crazy to Believe?
In the book, Slaughter House 5 there are many complex and interesting themes however the one that stood out to me the most was the theme of the afterlife. In the book, the Tralfamadors believe that a being does not die they simply exist in a different time meaning that they believe that a Tralfamador has a soul and an afterlife. This is a topic that has puzzled even the brightest minds. It has also been one of the biggest mysterious of the universe that no one has been able to answer and possibly never be able to. However, even though the concept believing in a religion is complex even the most ancient civilizations had different ideologies from multiple gods to only one supreme god. From the early caveman to the great Romans they believed that everyone had a soul. But since the beginning of the modern age and the advancements of science more and more people have become convinced that there is no such thing as a divine spirit or some all power cosmic ruler. Also, in our society if one believes in some sort of religion they are seen as fanatics and are not capable of making relational conclusions. This is a topic that affects many aspects of society because if a person is in a position of power and they identify with a religion it can affect their political career or they can abuse it to advance their career. Obviously, this is not the only reason why it is relevant. The other reasons that makes this topic relevant is because it sparks constant controversies that our country must face such as gay marriage rights and abortion. Due to the bad publicity that religion has been identified with it has caused people to longer identify with a religion because people, above all, fear judgment. So, this paper will explain why it is not ridiculous to believe in a religion like society would claim it is.
In the world today there exists many different religions that believe in many different versions of the soul and afterlife. For example, Roman Catholics believe âWhen by death our soul has been left in its state of pure intellectual substance, though still with a constant inclination to its former body, it will then be capable of pure intellectual speculation without having recourse to the medium of the senses and to the material images which in life accompany all our thoughts.â (Cardinal Henry, Knowledge of the Departed Human Soul) While, Buddhists believe in that the soul returns as a different being and the level of your good karma determines it. According to The Washington Post as of 2012 sixty percent of the United States population identified with some sort of religion however this number used to be much higher in 2005 with seventy-three percent formerly identified with a religion. However, a new revolutionary idea has emerged that makes it seem as though the idea of believing in a soul or afterlife as a rational concept. This idea is called biocentrism which is a new theory that life creates the universe rather than the universe creates life, which has been the popular theory amongst atheists. Dr. Robert Lanza is a major leader of this new movement he writes âThis new model â combining physics and biology instead of keeping them separate, and putting observers firmly into the equation â is called biocentrism.â (Dr. Lanza, Biocentrism)  This concept gives a rational perspective to the idea of an afterlife or a soul because if life created the universe something had to create life and so if something created life that something had to create something after death. Dr. Lanza also believes that we all have souls not in a metaphorical regard but in a spiritual sense. Dr. Lanza says âOf course, in most spiritual and religious traditions, a soul is viewed as emphatically more definitive than the scientific concept. It is considered the incorporeal essence of a person or living thing, and is said to be immortal and transcendent of material existence.â (Dr. Lanza, Do we have a soul?) If even scientists have begun to question the theories that once explained how the universe created life if even the most educated no longer believe fully then anyone can.
However, the fact remains that many people do not believe in an afterlife or a soul because it cannot be proven, a person cannot see, or touch it. This is a common tactic used by those who do not believe in any sort of idea of having a soul and the existence of an afterlife that if it cannot be seen it cannot exist. Yet there are many things in life that we do not understand but can be explained if we are willing to suspend our disbelief and have faith. Dr. Lanza says âWe think life is just the activity of atoms and particles, which spin around for a while and then dissipate into nothingness like a dust funnel but if we add life to the equation, we can explain some of the major puzzles of modern science, including Heisenberg's uncertainty principle, the double-slit experiment, entanglement, and the fine-tuning of the laws that shape the universe as we perceive it.â (Dr. Lanza, Do we have a souls?) This idea is very thought provoking because I understood as so much can be explained if we just believed in some sort of religion that tells us why something exists. For example, Catholicism explains the creation of the planet as well as the first humans. Although it might not be true it is still an example how
Another major factor that has caused religion to become despised is the rise in political leaders that claim to be influenced by their religion. These high ranking officials has caused to make religion seem that it is only for the fanatical who will never put aside their beliefs to the point that they will not join the ideas of others if they do not identify with their religion. When, the United States was being assembled by the Founding Fathers they agreed that there should be a separation between church and state because if there wasnât nothing would get accomplished because of all the contradicting ideals. However, in modern politics in the United States some politicians use the idea of being religious as a way to obtain voters such as Mitt Romney and other GOP candidates. These politicians make it impossible for bills to pass because they claim God would not agree and it is because of these politicians that make any religious person seem like they are closed minded and ignorant. To conclude if these people exist but they are not the majority of religious people instead a small minority of the religious population.
To finalize, believing in a religion should no longer be thought as preposterous, because even scientists have begun to question whether the universe was created by life with the idea biocentrism. Also, religious fanatics do not truly represent what believing in a religion really signifies they are only identifying with a religion to gain favor with the people to ensure their career. Finally, believing in any sort of religion can cause people to be better not only to each other but to bring change to the world.
         Annotated Bibliography
Cardinal Henry, Alexis âKnowledge of the Human Departed Soul.â Chapter II of Part II of "The Unseen World: An Exposition of Catholic Theology In Reference To Modern Spiritism". Published by Benziger Brothers 1929. This helped to know the different ideologies of one of the major religions of the world. Also, it was interesting to see how different ideals are shaped and formed.
Lanza, M.D., Robert. "Do We Have a Soul? A Scientific Answer." The Huffington Post. TheHuffingtonPost.com, 20 Apr. 2011. Web. 11 Dec. 2013. It was interesting to see how some scientists have changed their view on how the universe was made. It helped because it is difficult to find a scientist who agrees with the view of change.
Lanza, M.D., Robert. "âBiocentrismâ: How Life Creates the Universe."Â Msnbc.com. Msnbc, 6 May 2009. Web. 11 Dec. 2013. I did not know this theory had existed and it really helped because I did not believe I would find this made by a credible source like a doctor. This was relevant because it worked with the idea that times are changing.
Winston, Kimberly. "On Faith."Â Washington Post. N.p., 13 Aug. 2012. Web. 11 Dec. 2013. It helped with knowledge about how people are viewing religion in todayâs society. Also, statistical data helps to solidify the claim that people no longer believe.
