Stuck in prison for another month

The Mexican judge made his decision: USMC Marine Reservist, Sgt Andrew Tahmooressi is to remain in custody at El Hongo Federal Prison until his next court date on August 4. It was a difficult situation for family and friends, who held out hope that Wednesday would be his last day in prison.

After hours of testimony and explanations, the judge decided that Tahmooressi would remain in custody. The judge plans to travel to the San Ysidro area to view the place where Tahmooressi accidentally crossed over into Mexican territory. But the USMC Sgt isn’t the only one who ran afoul of Mexican laws.

Jill witnessed a “drunken assault”

Jill Tahmooressi expressed to Misguided Children that if it hadn’t been for the prayers of her friends, she might have not been allowed out of Mexico. Why? A ZETA reporter, Inez Garcia, who was covering her son’s hearing, was allegedly assaulted by an American named Len Newcomb, and Jill witnessed the “altercation.”

According to the  ZETA  article, Newcomb, 64, and a former military member and bodyguard named Antonio Perez, went to a local restaurant accompanied by Pastor Luis Benito. Since the hearing had dragged on for several hours, the men felt they needed a break. But then, Newcomb and Perez  allegedly got drunk.

The Pastor knew who Inez Garcia was, and was speaking with her when Len Newcomb, who is a “researcher” [ the word is a translation from Spanish, not exactly sure what it is]  for the  United States, began “harrassing” her. According to the Zeta article, Newcomb “hit her twice,” then fled in a “compact” car.

The definition of “assault” is a little screwy

If this video is the correct incident, Mr. Newcomb merely tapped Ms. Garcia  on the shoulder twice, not hard, and she didn’t appear to be in any way upset about it. Mr. Newcomb does not appear to be “drunk.”

The Mexican authorities are looking for any reason to jail Americans. If this is an indication of a “crime” in Mexico, Americans should start avoiding travel there at all costs.

The article states that Newcomb was not stopped as he fled because Mexican officials had not received “orders from above” to do so. Mr. Newcomb’s “bodyguard” was arrested and brought before a municipal judge. Mexican officials plan to review Newcomb’s legal status in Mexico.

Jill Tahmooressi, as a witness to the assault, could have been detained in the Mexican jail herself. She is grateful for being able to get out at all. .CPlase_panel display:none;
