Or you could go the Gai and Yamato watch their son/brother figures be flustered and oblivious and they try to help as best they can but if something hits too close to home they both have war flashbacks, therefore telling the story of how they got together and the story of his Lee and Sai get together at the same time

Or you could do Lee and Sai set up their sensei/older brother figures with each other.

Plus, there’s the Lee promising to protect Sai scene that can inspire so many aus. Lee is Sai’s bodyguard on a mission. Sai could be Lee’s bodyguard. They both could be bodyguarding someone and unintentionally sneaking away to make out (I don’t think they’d do it on purpose). Sai and Lee could be bodyguarding Gai from an old enemy and Yamato shows up too and now we have a clusterfuck of weird emotional messes.

I think it would be hilarious to see Yamato and Sai both sighing over Gai and Lee respectively while Gai and Lee furiously cry over how hard they’re trying to date them but Sai and Yamato are both so oblivious they don’t realize they’re being wooed.

Oh god, Neji, Tenten, Sakura, Naruto, and Kakashi’s reactions.

Neji: So, I saw Lee give Sai flowers today. And then Sai gave Lee a kiss on the cheek.

Tenten:

Sakura: …they both thought it was platonic didn’t they?

They're friggen adorable. Lee has chemistry with pretty much everyone because he's so open and kind and Sai NEEDS open and kind. He absolutly needs someone understanding and sweet because there's still so much he's learning about interacring with others.
