Battle lines drawn if you wonder which side speaks the truth
Then look closely to which speaks from pride
I love you, I swear it, I would never lie
But I fear for our lives and I fear your closed eyes
Raeâs hand was clammy and felt weird clasped inside Finnâs hand nonetheless it was comforting to do so, despite the uncomfortable waiting room chair that Finn had wedged himself into. His mind raced as he thought about the events that had brought them to the hospital.
-
âRae.â Finn shouted, panic in his voice as he pleaded with Rae to come out of her trance.
She stood, still glued to the spot and staring at her step-father with a haunting look in her eyes that made Finn shout out for her even more.
âRAE.â
Rae shook her head for a second and suddenly everything snapped back into normal time. Rae reached for the phone and hit â999â.
âHello,â She whispered, âI need an ambulance please.â
-
When they had arrived Karim had been taken through some doors and Rae and Finn were left behind. A passing nurse told them to go to the waiting room and there was any news then they would be informed. Raeâs eyes had never left the closed doors that led to Karim. There had been no opportunity for discussion but Finn didnât care. She had reached for his hand so quickly and so tightly that Finn knew she was still in there, that any darkness that might have been tempting for her hadnât got her just yet. Rae still needed Finn and that was all that mattered. Â
However, except for the few saddened glances that were passed and slight tightening of grips, the silence was a little scary for Finn. He was worried about how Rae would cope if she lost Karim as well; he needed to know what she was thinking.
Finn closed his eyes. Taking a deep breath, he tried to open the connection that had blocked for far too long. He let out a sigh of relief as he felt Raeâs mind opening up to him.
âRae, please talk to me. Tell me how your feeling.â
Raeâs hand tightened around Finnâs and she turned to look at him. Her eyes were filled with unshed tears and the immensity of her vulnerability knocked the breath out of Finn a little.
âFinn, I donât know what to do. I canât⌠I canât lose him too.â
Finn leant forward and rested his forehead against hers in an attempt to give her more comfort. Â
âRae, he will be ok. Heâs strong, healthy and he will fight whatever this is and still be here for you. He loves you Rae.â
Finn could feel Raeâs head shake against his in denial of his words.
âThatâs what I donât understand Finn. Heâs relatively young and heâs never had any health problems⌠so why is this happening? This isnât normal.â
Finn opened his eyes and moved his head back slightly to look at Rae. She looked broken and defeated, like she had lost hope. It scared him, the loss of hope could lead to her dissent into darkness again.
âRae, do not give up on him. He needs you just as much as you need him. You have both lost someone and you need to be there for each other. We know Karim will fight but he will need your help Rae. Fight for him.â
Rae finally opened her eyes and let her tears fall. She nodded slightly and slowly leaned forward, placing a very gentle kiss on Finnâs lips. His eyes closed at the contact. It felt good to finally have her kiss again and it overwhelmed him; he felt his own tears begin to form and squeezed his eyes tighter so that they didnât give way.
There was an uncomfortable cough and Finn and Rae split, looking to the intruder. The doctor was standing in front of them and Rae rushed to her feet.
âIs there any news?â She begged and the doctor narrowed his eyes at her.
âWho are you in relation to Mr Bouchtat?â He asked.
âIâm his step-daughter,â she gulped, âHeâs my legal guardian.â
âWhereâs Mrs Bouchtat.â The doctor asked, checking down his chart.
The doctor looked tired, his hair slightly greying and there were far too many frown lines on his forehead and between his eyes. He regarded Rae with lack of sympathy and patience for an emotional seventeen year old girl.
âSheâs dead.â Rae spoke coldly.
Finn stared at Rae, biting his cuticles nervously and waiting for the doctorâs next sentence.
âRight,â the Doctor cleared his throat, âMr Bouchtat has fallen into a coma. Weâve run all the tests possible and canât find anything wrong with him. Itâs a complete mystery but weâre trying to get to the bottom of it, I promise.â
Rae nodded and turned around. The doctor excused himself and Finn looked at Rae. Rae was crying and Finn pushed himself up so that he was close to her again. He wrapped his arms around her, cocooning her in warmth and love.
âHeâs going to die Finn. I just know it.â
Finn blinked his own tears away; he needed to be strong for Rae.
âDonât say that Rae. You donât know it and heâll be ok.â
âHow can you possibly say that Finn?â
Finnâs eyes met Raeâs and they stared at each other for a little bit, sharing emotions silently. Finn wrapped his arms around Rae tighter and placed a kiss against her forehead.
âWeâll do something, I promise.â
His mind jumped to Archie and he made a promise to himself that heâd ring for Archie or something, get him to the hospital as soon as possible. He just needed to hold Rae a bit longer.
âSit here.â Finn whispered a few moments later and he sat Rae down in the chair.
Pacing over to the pay phone, he slotted a couple of twenty pences into the machine and dialled Archieâs number. It rang a couple of times before Archie picked up and Finn sighed yet another breath of relief.
âArchie!â He cried, âYou have to get to the hospital.â
-
Archie and the rest of the gang walked hurriedly into the waiting room. Izzy, Chloe and Tix immediately ran over to Rae, each placing a hand on her shoulder in an attempt to comfort her. Finn made his way over to Archie and Chop.
âArch, thanks for coming mate. Rae really needs you to do this.â He tried to bring a small smile to his face but he couldnât manage it.
Tix grasped Raeâs shoulder tightly âRae, we all looked through the house and we found nothing out of the ordinary, nothing that could cause Karim to be this way.â
Finn noticed that Tix gave Rae a pointed look and the slight nod that Rae gave in return but before he could ask by what she meant, Archie stepped forward and spoke out to Rae.
âRae, I promise I will try my hardest to help him.â
Rae smiled small and nodded at Archie. She grabbed his hand and stood, and started leading Archie towards Karimâs room.
âHeâs through here,â she whispered.
The group of friends walked into Karimâs room and all stared in horror at the sight before them. Karim, usually so full of life and vibrancy, was lying on the hospital bed looking pale and drawn with tubing coming out of every available space of his body. A sob escaped Rae and Finn leant forward, placing his arms around her and taking her into a tight hug. She couldnât stand to look at Karim so broken, all those machines attached to him. Rae buried her face in the crook of Finnâs neck and cried.
-
The whole scene was horrible, and Archie swallowed the lump that was forming in his throat and stepped forward. He was about to place his hands on Karim when he could feel the eyes of every one of his friends on him, waiting for him to give them the hope that Karim would be ok. He felt his nerves begin to rise in his body and his hands started to shake. He took a deep breath but the nerves didnât subside. He just needed to be alone.
He turned to his friends. âGuys, Iâm sorry but can I do this alone? I need to concentrate.â
Chloe, Tix, Izzy and Chop all nodded and turned to leave the room, whilst Finn was gently whispering to Rae, gradually leading her through the door. Once he was alone Archie felt he could breathe enough to do what he needed to do. He closed his eyes and placed his hands on Karim, one on his head, one on his heart.
Delving into Karimâs body he headed straight to Karimâs heart. It was beating strong; nothing wrong. Karimâs lungs looked as though they had taken a beating; slightly red and bruised but with a little persuasion they healed almost immediately. Archie then searched the rest of Karimâs chest and found nothing wrong. He checked Karimâs mind and but again, there was nothing there to show why he was in the coma.
He searched through the rest of his body and found nothing. Archie drew himself out of Karimâs body and pated for breath. He searched and searched and found⌠nothing. He couldnât understand why Karim was this way; there was nothing inside him to indicate the reason behind him coma.
Archie stood and walked out of Karimâs room and into the waiting room. Six heads raised as he walked into the room and when they noticed Archieâs beaten expression, all their hopeful expressions dropped.
Rae stood and walked over to Archie, âArchie, tell me heâs ok. Tell me heâs awake.â Raeâs voice shook and the tears began to stream down her face.
âIâm sorry Rae. I found some bruising on his lungs but I healed that and then, nothing. Heâs fine Rae, I donât know whatâs wrong.â
Rae began to shake violently, âNo youâre wrong! There has to be something!â Raeâs voice began to rise and she moved restlessly around the room, âyou must have missed something, he canât be like this for no reason!â
The small tables in the room began to shake as Raeâs emotions started to spiral. Â
Chloe stood and walked over to Rae, placing a gentle hand on her shoulder. âRae, please-,â
Rae shrugged off Chloeâs hand and turned to her sharply, âNo! There has to be something! He didnât look properly! He couldnât have!â
Finn walked over to Rae and turned her to him.
âFinn, why is he like this? He shouldnât be like this!â Again, Rae buried her face into Finnâs shoulder and tried to subside her tears.
Archie looked at Finn, âIâm sorry. Weâll put some protections on the room but then I think we should all go home and get some rest.â
Rae looked back up at Finn. âI canât leave him, I canât leave-â
âShh, Rae itâs ok. We can stay here as long as you need.â He whispered against her forehead as he placed a single kiss there.
-
The rest of the gang went back to Karimâs room and placed some protections all around him, warding off dark power and sending power to Karim, hoping that he would awake. As they made their way back to the living room, they quickly made their excuses and goodbyes to Finn and Rae.
As he left Archie whispered to Rae, âIâm sorry.â
She didnât answer.
As they snuggled together in the waiting room, Rae soon fell asleep. Her head rested on Finnâs shoulder, her energy finally leaving her after a wearing night but Finn was still awake, feeling hopeless and dreading what might be about to happen. Tixâs stern look at Rae stuck in his memory and he couldnât help but wonder what was going on.
Another shot of whiskey, canât stop looking at the door
Wishing youâd come sweeping in the way you did before
âDo you remember that time when we went to the park, yâknow near the universities? And we just hung around for ages thinkinâ we were getting drunk off two bottles of WKD Blue?â Finn laughed as he took a sip of his beer.
Stacey cackled, her head tilting back and her mousey blonde hair falling down her back. âWhat were we, thirteen? How did we even get those bottles?â
âJamieâs Uncleâs-â
âFriendâs girlfriend! Oh yes, I remember now.â Stacey smiled, âthose were good times.â
âThe best.â Finn grinned back.
Those times definitely did feel a lot simpler than as things stood now. It was like a dream that sometimes, only in a fleeting moment, Finn wished he could return to. Just as Finn was thinking about his past, the pub door blew open and his present walked in. Rae and Chloe hurried in out of the cold air, giggling with each other. Finn noticed Stacey tense up beside him and his eyes wandered between his girlfriend and his ex. It was a strange place that heâd never thought heâd be in.
Rae eyed them suspiciously and Finn watched as Staceyâs face turned into a grin. He knew her well enough that it was fake; probably from the death stare that Rae was giving the two of them as they sat alone in a booth.
Calm down.
He tried to reach Rae but he could tell that his messages werenât being received. He grew angry; it was clear that Rae had blocked his messages and he hadnât even done anything. He had thought that things were slowly getting better, especially after taking the boys advice.
âRaeâŚâ He started but Rae immediately turned on her heel and was out of the door a lot quicker than sheâd entered.
He ran after her, not caring about the fact that heâd abandoned Stacey sitting at the table. As he made his way to the door, he was about to reach for the handle to push it open but Chloe positioned herself between him and the door. Anger flashed through him as he stared at Chloe. He was ready to shove her out of the way but, as his hand made his way to touch her, he remembered that one touch could send him to his death.
âWhat the fuck are you doing?â Chloe barked, her eyes dangerous with rage.
âWhat do you mean Chloe?â He asked, crossing his arms across his chest and staring moodily at his friend.
âWhy the fuck are you with that?â She asked, sending a dismissive scowl in Staceyâs direction.
âDâyou know what⌠I canât be fucked with this right now Chloâ. Not when me girlfriend is clearly upset.â
âWell youâd better because youâre doing an awful lot to piss MY best friend off.â Chloe spat.
âI havenât done anything!â Finn insisted.
âFuck off back to your precious new girl.â Chloe said with a flippant wave of her hand. Â âIâm going to go find my best friend and see if sheâs ok, Iâll see you at circle. If you come after us right now, Iâll touch you.â
Her eyes were darker than usual and Finn couldnât help but wonder if her threat was more than just a threat. She made her way out of the pub and Finn was faced with two dilemmas; either to run after them and risk death, or sit back with Stacey and do nothing wrong.
He went for the second option.
As he went back over to sit with Stacey, she had a bright smile on her face. He smiled back quickly before taking a slurp of his beer and sitting upright, not even caring how uncomfortable it was. He needed Rae to open up to him, something was happening and he just couldnât tell what.
Rae, Iâm sorry.
Yet again he got a feeling that the message wasnât being delivered and he groaned inwardly in frustration. He was brought out of his thoughts by a question that made him choke on the beer as he drunk. Spluttering over the table, he stared at Stacey with wide eyes.
âPardon?â
She giggled, âSilly billy. I asked, what is a circle?â
âWhat do you mean?â Finn replied, âI donât know what youâre talking about.â
âThat blonde bitch, her name Chloe?â
Finn nodded. âSheâs not a bitch though.â
Stacey continued, âShe said something about seeing you at Circle? Whatâs circle Finn? Some sort of cult youâve joined since youâve moved to the middle of nowhere?â
Finn laughed uncomfortably, âNo. What makes you say that?â
âI donât know Finn. Things are just a little weird since I got here⌠like, that girl. Youâre like obsessed with her and she doesnât seem all that great.â
âRae?â Finnâs face screwed together in annoyance; âRaeâs amazing and I love her⌠thatâs why I might seem like Iâm obsessed with her⌠but Iâm going to spend the rest of my life with her and I just know it.â
There was a silence between the two of them. Finnâs mind raced back to his vision when heâd seen Rae and him living a happy long life together. All the future that they had ahead of them and all the happiness that could be.
âWhatever you sayâŚâ Stacey replied, leaning back into the booth and watching Finn carefully.
He squirmed underneath her gaze.
âSo what is a circle? You havenât actually said.â
Finn searched ever crevice of his brain for a decent excuse or something that she couldâve misheard but he came up with nothing.
âOh its nothing, just a gameâŚâ He mumbled as he stood up, draining his beer and placing the glass back down on the table⌠âIâll go get us another drink.â

âWhereâs Rae?â Finn croaked again, unable to register without her beside his side. He reached up to fiddle with his hair, but his hands fell upon his bald head.
âFinnâŚâ Finnâs dad shuffled closer to his son, pulling his sonâs hands down and into his. Suddenly, everything zoomed back into focus for Finn. Itâd been a dream; Raeâs flowing hair, her smile, her laugh, her tears, her fears. Everything had been a dream⌠everything except Rae.
âWhoâs Rae?â Archie asked again, and Chop looked at Finn with puzzlement on his face. Finnâs heart beat faster as he remembered everything about reality. Finn was a cancer kid; heâd lost his hair to chemo, his strength weakened by radio-therapy.
âRaeâs a girl I met in chemo.â He whispered, his voice was raspy which caused his dad to reach for a cup of water and press it to his lips. After taking a couple of sips of the cool liquid, Finn felt slightly better as it ran down the back of his throat. âSheâs great.â He whispered, a small smile coming onto his mouth.
Finn walked into the chemo room, he scowled as he plucked the earphones out of his ears out of request from the nurse. He had started to lose his hair that morning, it started to fall out in clumps while he was standing in the shower. Heâd cried and his eyes felt red raw, only making his bad mood worse. He collapsed into the chair and let the nurse hook him up, he wouldâve felt like a recovering addict getting his fix if he didnât feel so bloody sick during the treatment. His eyes caught the gaze of a girl who sat opposite him. Her hair was completely gone, but her wide hazel coloured eyes captivated him.
âAlright?â He asked and she smiled slightly at him.
âAlright?â She replied.
âHow come you never told us about her?â Chop asked and Finn shrugged. He saw that his dad was starting to look uncomfortable beside him, shuffling slightly in his seat.
âSo what happened to me?â Finn asked, ignoring his dadâs twitching.
âYou kinda just fell asleep and didnât wake up for two weeks. Lazy bastard.â Archie smiled, causing a smirk to fall onto Finnâs face.
âSo what did ya used to look like, before they pumped ya with chemicals?â Finn asked as they sat playing with a couple of beer mats he had in his bag. He missed drinking, but the very stench of alcohol made him want to throw up these days. She suddenly leaned forward, reaching for the sick bowl and throwing up. Finnâs hand jumped up as if it to pull her hair back but he then felt stupid as there was nothing to hold. Instead, his hand fell on her back and he patted it awkwardly. After sheâd finished throwing up, she leant back in the seat.
âUgh, I look terrible.â She moaned, taking a wipe and cleaning her face. Finn reached for a chewing gum and passed it to her.
âNah, you could never look terrible.â He smiled reassuringly. âSo what did ya used to look like?â He asked and she looked at him with a haunted look on her face. Slowly she shrugged and pulled her purse out of her bag, she pulled out a photograph which featured three girls in a photo booth smiling and laughing.
âThatâs me.â She said, pointing to a girl in the centre of the picture. Finn could hardly recognise her, she was still beautiful but chemo had destroyed her previous beauty. She was now gaunt in comparison to her previous fuller figure; she used to have stunning raven black hair that fell down past her bountiful breasts. She now was a frail figure, a former shell of herself, it didnât matter. She was still perfect in Finnâs eyes.
Finnâs dad cleared his throat, drawing Finnâs attention towards him. Finn looked at his dad.
âGo on daâ spit it out.â He said, rolling his eyes expecting a lecture from him about not being allowed to leave him.
âItâs about Rae.â His dad whispered and Finnâs alarms went off inside his head. His dad had met Rae a few times and theyâd hit it right off. Laughing and joking about music, claiming that Finnâs taste was rubbish.
âNothing like a bit of Pink Floyd!â His dad laughed with Rae who giggled beside him. Finn rolled his eyes.
âPink Floyd are a load of crap.â Finn protested loudly, smiling slightly at the nurse as she came to check on him.
âI think that Pink Floyd are the best band in the world.â Rae claimed, a teasing look in her eyes. Finnâs dad started to chat with the nurse and Finn leaned towards Rae.
âI know youâre lying.â He whispered in her ear.
âMe?! Lying⌠never Finlay Nelson!â She grinned.
âFinn, Finn.â Finnâs dad shook his hand, bringing him out of his flashback and Finn stared at his dad with a slight vacant look in his eyes.
âRae died two weeks ago, just as you went into your coma.â Finnâs dad whispered and Finnâs heart broke. He began to cry, wretching as he did so. His heart broke in two as he felt alone and nobody could do anything to console him.
Even I know, there's a line between emotion and
Fate, faith
You and me
Love and pain
On My Mind
But the time we spent was so short
Can't believe it's time to go again
Finn could feel his body becoming weaker and weaker, day by day. His heart felt like it had been wrenched away from him and the dream was just a massive tease of a life he couldâve had. He spent most of the time lying on his side in the hospital bed, letting the nurses move him as he continued to stare into the distance. He couldnât get Rae out of his head, everything that he thought about would lead back to her and he missed her with such a deep pain that he didnât know how to do anything else.
Archie came to visit and sat with Finn for a while in silence. Finn thought about how Rae had spoken to him in the dream, told him what to do about his best friend.
âYou need to sort things out with Archie.â She said, and his face turned from one of happiness to one of annoyance.
âI said I didnât want to talk about it.â
âYou canât spend your life avoiding things Finn⌠Archieâs been your best mate since you were little kids, and if youâre not careful youâre gonna lose him. Heâs only gay â itâs not the end of the world!â Finn knew that Rae spoke sense, but he still struggled to deal with the fact that Archie was gay â he couldnât quite understand his own feelings, didnât know how to make sense of them.
âI know, and I donât have a problem with him being gay but I guess, Iâm annoyed.â
âWhy are you annoyed? Whatâs it got to do with you?â
âArchieâs always been with girls, and ended up breaking up with them and breaking their hearts. I guess it were âcause he was trying to figure out whether he was gay or not â but that ainât fair. Not only is he trying to lie to himself, but heâs hurting other people in the process.â Finn sighed, speaking the words out heâd always been too afraid to admit.
âYeah, but you have to understand Finn â the society that we live in, well, it just sucks. It donât accept people who have different preferences to what is perceived to be the norm â which is wrong, thereâs no point living in the past. Just forgive âim and move on.â Rae slightly smiled at him, and he rolled onto his back, looking up at the sky.
âIâm ok with the fact that youâre gay.â He grumbled and Archie looked up at him with a little light in his eyes, it was like Finn uttering the words had relieved Archie of a massive burden and Finn felt guilt rush through him that heâd ever led Archie to think that he was upset with Archie for it. âI were just angry that you messed around wiâ loads of girls and hurt âem, like that was a dickish thing to do Arch.â Archie nodded, his eyes never leaving Finnâs face as his best friend explained himself. âBut Rae told me that the society we live in sucks and it made yer do it, and thereâs no point living in the past. She told me just to forgive ya and move on.â He smiled slightly, Raeâs words echoing around his head.
They sat in a comfortable silence again for a while, Archie fidgeting with his hands as he pondered about what to say.
âWhen did Rae say that?â He asked and Finnâs face drained of colour. He looked to his best friend with a sheepish look on his face, wondering if he could tell him about the dream without Archie thinking he was going crazy.
âWell, I dreamt about her when I were asleep Arch, I donât know. It all felt so real, as if I were actually with her.â He mumbled, picking at the excess skin around his nails.
âMaybe it was real.â Archie whispered and Finn stared at him, he thought about the possibility of some kind of afterlife, some kind of in between that heâd been to. He shook his head at the very possibility of it.
âNo, it was a dream.â He sighed sadly. âThing is Arch, I never took my chance to be with her when she were alive⌠and now sheâs not here.â His voice broke again, and his pushed the tears roughly away with his palms. Archie nodded and the two fell into a silence again.
You're always on my mind, all the time
On my mind, believe it
Oxygen
Don't leave, don't leave me here
I can't breathe without you
Finn slept a lot; it was as if ever since Rae had left the world he just gave up. His dad begged him to fight the cancer but Finn didnât want to. His heart was crushed and with it the strength to fight. He was willing to surrender to the disease, desperate for the chance to be with his girl once again.
There was a knock at the door of his private room and he coughed slightly as he opened his eyes slowly. Two girls stood at his door and he instantly recognised them from the photo with Rae.
âThatâs Chloe and Tix, theyâre my two best friends. I love them so much, theyâve been brilliant ever since I found out that I had cancer.â Rae smiled, pointing at the two girls beside him.
âThey look nice.â He scrunched his nose up at her and she smiled down at the photo.
âTheyâre the best.â She whispered, biting her lip slightly. âIâm really scared to leave them though. Like, I donât want them to fall to pieces when I go. I need them to be strong for me.â
âStop talking as if youâre gonna die.â Finn scolded her.
âYou know what I mean.â She said with such a sombre look on her face that echoed Finnâs very inside fears.
He smiled at them weakly, motioning with his head gently for them to come in. The two girls made their way in and smiled small at him. He could see, beneath the smiles plastered on their faces, that their hearts were breaking and that they missed Rae as much as he did.
âIâm Chloe.â The pretty mousy blonde girl said, waving awkwardly at him.
âTix.â The other girl replied in a smaller voice. Finn nodded and they sat in the two seats beside him which were normally occupied by Archie and Chop.
Chloe was the first to speak, her eyes brimming with tears as they locked with Finnâs.
âWe thought we should visit.â She whispered. âRae wouldâve wanted us to.â He nodded in agreement and Tix looked away, tears rushing down her face.
âShe loved you yâknow.â He promised them and they looked at him with pain-stricken faces. âShe told me that she didnât want you to fall to pieces when she went⌠that she needed you to be strong for her.â
âShe shouldâve thought about that before she went and left us.â Chloe mumbled, anger quiet in her voice. Tix put a hand on Chloeâs arm to calm her down and Chloe looked back up to Finn. âIâm sorry⌠Itâs just really hard without her.â
âI know.â Finn whispered. âI were in love wiâ her yâknow.â He gulped down, pain raw in his throat. âBut it were too late for me to ever tell her.â
âBut she knewâ Tix spoke up and Finn stared back at her.
âWhat ya mean?â
âShe knew that you were in love wiâ her, and she were in love wiâ you. It were like this unspoken bond that the two of you had. She didnât think it needed voicing.â Tixâs analysis of Finnâs relationship brought waves of comfort to him, she had felt what he had felt.
They stayed silent for a while and Finn was starting to feel more tired, his bones ached and he just wanted to curl up in a ball and sleep.
âWe need to tell you something.â Tix whispered and Finn lifted his heavy head to face the two girls.
âWhen Rae died, we were by her side with her Mum and KarimâŚâ Chloe whispered and Finn nodded, his heart in his throat as the two girls began to talk about Raeâs death.
Rae looked at her little family around her, theyâd been her support system throughout everything and as she grew weaker, she grew more thankful for them. Chloe gripped onto Raeâs hand.
âIs it time?â She asked desperately, tears running down her face and fear in her voice. Rae nodded peacefully, closing her eyes peacefully. Linda began to cry in Karimâs arms, howling slightly about how this wasnât fair.
âMum.â Rae whispered, holding out her hand without opening her eyes. Linda rushed over to her, grabbing her hand and kissing it repeatedly.
âWhat is it my baby girl?â She asked.
âIâm so glad youâre happy with Karim, heâs like a proper dad to me.â She sighed quietly and Linda cried as Karimâs hand came down in support on her shoulder.
âIâm ready.â Rae whispered, air rushing out of her lungs. Tix started to cry quietly in the corner, Danny wrapping his arms around his girlfriend and Chloe rocked herself slightly. She could still feel the warmth in Raeâs hand and she could see a pink blush developing in Raeâs cheeks. A little laugh escaped her lips and a single word left her mouth.
âFinn!â
Then Rae stopped breathing, left with a smile on her face and everyone crying around her.
âShe said my name?â Finn whispered, his mouth open slightly in wonder. Chloe nodded with a little smile tugging at the corner of her lips.
âWell, we came to visit and your dad told us that youâd gone into a coma⌠and it was around the same time that Rae passed away.â She whispered.
Finnâs heart started to hammer in his chest, he wondered if it was possible⌠if their souls had joined as he went into a coma and as she died, as if her passing triggered the unexpected coma. He hoped so because it might mean that he would one day join her again.
âI miss her.â He whispered and the girls nodded with him, echoing his pain. âI miss her like I would miss oxygen if it were taken from me.â
I don't want to be without you
I don't want to live without you
I don't want to breathe without you
You're my oxygen
When I Die
I wanna follow in your footsteps
So you know you're never alone
No you didn't have to feel a thing
No you're never alone
I'm still here but I'm waiting
For our long conversations
I'm still here but I'm waiting to go home
Finn slept a lot longer these days, barely aware of the boys and his dad at his side. Each day passed quickly, all blurring into one. He became aware of someone sitting beside him and he opened his eyes slowly to see Tix sitting beside him.
âHey Tix.â He whispered quietly and slowly.
âThe times coming soon isnât it?â She asked and he nodded slowly. His whole body hurt and he could feel his organs slowing down. It hurt him even to talk. âWhen you go⌠will you look after Rae for me?â She asked and his heart skipped a couple of beats at the sound of Raeâs name, at the hope within him that he would see her again. He nodded, only just managing to do that. He shut his eyes again, falling back into the world of slumber as he did so. He could vaguely make out Tix leaving, shutting the door behind her, but soon he was lost in his empty dreams.
He was awoken by a gentle shaking and as he opened his eyes he noticed Archie, Chop and Izzy at his side.
âYour dad told us its nearly time.â Archie whispered, his voice gruff in his throat as he tried to stay strong for Finn. Finn nodded and Archieâs eyes fell to the floor. Finn wanted to say anything, do anything to get his little gang laughing again but he couldnât muster any words up. He probably didnât have the strength to say them anyway.
âRemember that time Finn got shat on by a pigeon?â Chop voiced up, almost as if he heard Finnâs desire for the friends to be laughing. Everyone giggled at the memory of Finn running around trying to get the shit out of his hair without actually touching it.
âFuckin' hate birds.â Finn managed to mumble, the gang laughing loudly around him. Soon they were all reminiscing, talking for Finn when he couldnât. He managed to speak out a few sentences but remained silent for the most part, just enjoying the chorus of laughter coming from his precious friends. The nurse soon came to them to tell them that visiting hours were over. Chop and Izzy said their goodbyes, Chopâs eyes full of tears but still managing to make a smile come onto Finnâs face. Izzy looked at him with a huge smile on her face, but her heart breaking in her eyes. He forced his hand onto hers and smiled small at her.
âLook after Chop.â He croaked and she nodded. âYouâre good for him.â He smiled, closing his eyes in fatigue. The two left, leaving Finn alone with his best friend.
âI donât want you to go.â Archie cried, a tear falling down his cheek and Finn opened his eyes. He smiled at his best friend, attempting to bring up the biggest, most reassuring grin that he could find. Archie smiled back at his attempt. âYouâre my best mate, who else am I gonna talk to?â He asked and Finn cleared his throat.
âYouâll find someone, thereâll be a boy who you love with everything and heâll be your strength. I promise.â His voice got quieter with each word but Archie nodded back at him.
âI love you mate.â Archie whispered and Finn let out a huge sigh.
âI love you too.â
He slept a little bit longer, his energy getting zapped up nearly as quickly as it was granted. Finnâs dad watched as his son slept quietly, his heart broke as he wished he could take the pain away from Finn. It was hard losing your son in such a way; he never expected to have to watch Finn go through it. In fact, it never entered his mind.
âDaââ Finnâs croaky voice brought Gary out of his deep thoughts.
âIs it time lad?â He asked, choking on his own words and Finn nodded quietly, not even opening his eyes. Gary wouldâve done anything for Finn to open his eyes in that moment, to see his chocolate brown eyes.
âWonderwall.â Finn whispered so quietly that it nearly got lost. Gary nodded, reaching for the stereo and slipping the CD in, he skipped to the right track number and let it play. âLove you daâ.â Finn whispered as the lyrics surrounded them.
âToday is gonna be the day, that they're gonna throw it back to you. By now you should've somehow realized what you gotta do. I don't believe that anybody, feels the way I do about you now.â
Finn let out a happy sigh and Gary knew it was time.
âI love you son.â He whispered, taking hold of Finnâs hand and giving it a gentle squeeze.
A smile came to Finnâs face as he drifted from their world into the next.
âIâve missed you Rae.â He said, letting out a huge breath of air as he moved on.
When I die I'll be fine
Cause I know you're always there
When I die I'm alright
Cause I know you'll be there
You are home
Coming Home
And now I'm coming home
I'm coming home to you again
I hope you feel the same
Finn opened his eyes, a sudden surge of strength coming to him. He became aware of his surroundings slowly, he was at the beach again and excitement rushed through him. He noticed that the wind was blowing in his hair, he had his hair back! He also noticed, a little way off from him on the beach, a girl standing with flowing black raven hair. He ran down the beach, unable to hide his joy at being reunited with his beautiful girl.
âIâve missed you Rae!â He shouted as he bounded up to her, taking her into his arms and silently promising himself that he would never let her go again. Everything felt natural and he felt like he had come home. She laughed as he flung himself at her. He buried his hair in her hair, hair heâd never been able to feel or see back in their old lives. He appreciated it now more than ever, it was soft and silky and he wanted to never take his head out of it.
âHow was it back in the world?â She asked.
âIt was hard; I think I know why I had to return though.â He whispered, it was an unspoken thing now that Rae knew where they were and what it meant.
âWhyâs that?â
âI needed to fix things... tell Archie I loved him, spend time with me dad, and spend time with Chloâ and Tix...â He paused, looking up to her and seeing tears in her eyes. âDonât cry, girl.â He whispered.
âAre they ok?â She asked and he nodded.
âI told them to hold it together, to be strong. Theyâre doing you so proud Rae-Rae.â He smiled and she smiled back. It felt good not to be in pain anymore, for his body not to be weighed down with the cancer that had plagued him for two years.
He took a step back and looked at her with a strange look on his face; he noticed that she was wearing a white dress that resembled a casual wedding dress.
âYou look beautiful.â He smiled, causing a blush to turn to her cheeks. She twirled it a bit in her hand.
âThis is what I always wanted to wear if I ever got married.â She sighed, sadness in her voice. âI guess Iâll never know now.â Finn nodded, but suddenly an idea sprung to his mind.
âI know! Letâs get married now.â He grinned.
âDonât be silly, we canât get married. Weâre both dead, and weâre â well, I donât know where we are... where are we Finn?â She asked, panic slightly in her voice.
âWeâre together Rae, thatâs all that matters.â He promised.
They stood next to each other, giggling as they pretended to greet their wedding guests at their imaginary wedding.
âOh Mrs Dewhurst, how nice to meet ya â donât worry, I canât remember what yer tits look likeâ Rae giggled, preparing to the shake the hands of an imaginary Mrs Dewhurst.
âWhat?â Finn laughed out loud and Rae just told him not to worry. Finn had managed to change into a white suit, barefoot in the sand. It was a bit like magic really, he just thought about what he wanted to wear and he changed into it. Rae had managed to get white flowers braided into her hair simply by thinking about it. She looked breathtaking.
He stood away from her, next to the imaginary minister and she began to descend down the make-believe aisle. It felt more real than anything ever before and Finn could feel the tears in his eyes as his girl walked towards him. Suddenly, âWonderwallâ by Oasis filled the air out of nowhere and tears started to fall down his face as he watched her. They preceded to have their own little wedding, trying to recite the traditional wedding vows off the top of their head, but forgetting half the words and laughing instead.
âI promise to forsake you â wait, no thatâs not right.â Finn exclaimed and Rae had to hold her sides as she laughed along with him.
They kissed for as long as they liked when Rae shouted, âYOU MAY KISS THE BRIDEâ, not needing to pay attention to their imaginary wedding guests.
After a while, holding hands, Rae and Finn turned towards the big ocean. It felt natural to walk towards the ocean, and so they did. It was calm, never threatening, but tranquil and full of their happiness. They stayed there for the rest of eternity, in their own little world of Rae and Finn.
