Star Gazing
My daily exercise,
The bedtime dog walk,
And so many night looking up.
There may only be a star or two,
Sometimes none visible at all,
But up and up I’ll look.
I wish I knew those constellations,
The night skies tessellations.
Perhaps I’ll buy a book or two,
Try each month to learn a few,
Patterns to attempt to spot,
But those heavens do hold a lot
Probably more that history forgot.
Still I’d like to gaze up at the stars
And find things more familiar.
The Memphis Astronomical Society, or MAS, is a public service organization which promotes understanding of the science of astronomy through free public lectures and demonstrations. Members are seldom professional astronomers. We work in many different occupations, some in the sciences, but most in other fields. We are amateurs in the basic sense of the word: we study astronomy because we love it.

This time of year, a lot of new telescopes are purchased as Christmas gifts. Unfortunately, many of them turn out to be unsatisfactory for a number of reasons, and consequently end up in closets or attics. In order to head off this recurring problem, Freddy will discuss the various features considered desirable in a beginner’s telescope, as well as certain flaws to be avoided. If you (or any people you know) are planning to purchase a telescope anytime soon, please plan to attend, and invite your friends to hear Freddy’s presentation.
