Saw a news article concerning the building of surf boards out of algae. A top contending surfer try it out and assured the reporter he would be using them later this year. What is the oppinion of the surfer world down under toward these new boards made from algae?
Yeah I heard that Rob Machado has been involved in developing it. There’s not too much buzz about it here yet, but I think it’s more to do with the fact it’s only at the prototype stage. People who have mentioned it have all been positive about it though. It will be a good thing if it does get used in all surfboards. Considering surfing is an activity that takes place in nature, the equipment we use isn’t exactly environmentally friendly. Both surfboards and wetsuits use a large amount of petrochemicals in their manufacturer. Algae surfboards and Yulex wetsuits is the future. So yeah I’m all for it and it can only be a good thing
hey (: I've had about about 5 surfing lessons last summer and i absolutely fell in love with it. i went to uni and now its summer i want to surf again. i was out of the white water on my 3rd day, but i fear i've forgotten everything i learnt and what the good conditions for a beginner are?....i dont own a board, should i just take beginner lessons again :/ ? ((I surf at Croyde in Devon, UK))
Hey. I wouldn’t think you need to start all over again at the beginning, but maybe have a refresher lesson. I’m sure after an hour or so you will get the feeling back. Even if you had kept going when you went to uni you would still have had days in the water where it felt like you had forgotton everything. We all have had sessions like that. The only other choice is to buy a board and go out and try to remember back to your lessions. Don’t let this put you off getting back into the water though. Go out and have fun, that’s why we surf after all :)

An advice to that anon with competitive surfing (this is my opinion) I think competitive surfing kinda kills the vibe of surfing for me. I think Surfing is a way to express my self and leave out anger to feel good to just surf if you get what I mean :) The problem with competitive is that it's kinda to show off and see who's best. And why would you need that in a sport that is mostly about being and feeling free and to have fun with your friends? (like I said thats only my opinion :) )
I wouldn’t disagree with you. Personally competitive surfing has never appealed to me either (as in taking part in), BUT if it’s someone’s dream to do that then I would support them 100%. Some people love the rush of measuring themselves against fellow competitors, others just prefer the stoke of riding a wave and being in the ocean. I fall into the latter category, but I wouldn’t begrudge anyone that was in the former :)
I started surfing half a year ago, I do it almost every day, I use a short board and Im starting to do some turns, Im 18. Do you think it's too late for me to get into competitive surfing? At my surf club i have a few girlfriends that are competing at nationals and I'd like to compete as well eventually.
I think if you have a dream then you should follow it. There is no denying that it will require heaps of hard work and commitment but if you are willing to do whatever it takes then why not. Just make sure you enjoy the journey to your goal and if for some reason you don’t achieve what you’ve set out to do at least you enjoyed the ride. Good luck
