However, sometimes people just don’t get it because it’s not fully built. It’s like expecting them to judge a cake just from the batter. Make sure it’s a cake at least before people try it! Nobody wants to waste time or $. But again, Quality often doesn’t come fast or easy or cheap, even in tech. And that’s the true challenge, is knowing when it is a true MVP. I feel that if you love it and can show it without having to completely explain it, then it’s an MVP. If neither applies, it’s as good as cake batter. Don’t give cake batter and ask people if they like your cake.

See – Theoretically – you are supposed to create a theory/hypothesis – then go out and Ask people if they would use it – then build a prototype MVP (minimum viable product) – then get people to use it or pay for it. An alternative ideal version is to get people paying for an idea before you ever build it.

The problem that I’ve been experiencing in Tech land is this: Building a bare bones prototype/MVP often isn’t good enough for people to Understand or Love. Sometimes it’s only a piece.

Artists create masterpieces not based on asking people, or trying to adapt to what people want. They certainly do not paint by number or paint 1 tiny section and then ask if you’ll pay for it or if you like it, and then do the rest accordingly.

But Tech isn’t “Art”.

It’s a blend of Scientific Method and Business. There’s no art involved, and certainly no love in Lean Method.

Love and Art are things that are immeasurable. Abstract. Illogical. Ambiguous. Ethereal. But above all – Not Measurable.

But how can people know what they want if they’ve never experienced it before??

Some of the greatest ideas in the world have proportionally sounded like the stupidest ideas in the world! Twitter – 140 characters or less, a new way of communicating. Wow? Facebook – it’s a social network. Ok? And explaining only goes so far, often showing is completely different than telling.

I question if some of the tech hits that people love – Instagram, Tumblr, etc – were done using Lean Method. I question if Lean Method is better in Theory than Practice. I am only applying my questioning to the creation/true Startup process, not to corporate level.
