   "Looks like it’s someone’s birthday --” Two boxes stacked in his arms, he hefted them onto the only open surface in sight with a thud, the muscles in his back easing with sudden relief. The rest of the detail had already unloaded the rest of the supplies from the rover -- mostly food and tech, since their last big run only two days ago had been focused on medical supplies -- but Bellamy had snuck a few extras on board, having kept a mental list of the sort of things Clarke complained hadn’t been in the first retrieval. Anything was better than nothing, he knew. But there was this ever present urgency within him to do more. His brain and body could not meet in a state of peace, could not shake the fight of flight instinct that came with constantly feeling under threat. He’d seen war, and he’d lived with it all his life -- how was he supposed to begin anew when he hadn’t known any other way?

   He was somewhat relieved to hear her concede so easily. It might have been the unenthusiastic response to her asking if she could run something by him, or maybe the exhaustion was plain enough in the lines of his face. If he looked half as worn down as he felt, he would still look rather like death, complete with bags under his eyes and rough stubble all along the contours of his face. That wasn’t to say he wouldn’t have found the energy and mustered the strength to follow her back to her makeshift office ( what he’d been calling it, anyways ) to address whatever concern she had -- no, Bellamy was the person to turn to for anything. It was a rare day he didn’t hear his name being shouted across the compound, or that someone didn’t come to fetch him for something, or that he didn’t sacrifice food or sleep for any number of reasons. But the one reason that he always came back to was her -- his sister. The wellbeing of everyone else had flooded in secondary to his love for Octavia, and she would always be the person he fought hardest for.

   His teeth ground together silently, his lips set in a hard line. As she tightened the bandage -- far tighter than he would have managed on his own -- he didn’t so much grimace as make a sound. He was stubborn and possibly a little proud, and he’d never liked asking for help. He’d never needed to before. On the Ark, even with his sister hidden under the floorboards, he’d held the reigns of control. He managed to keep her safe, and his mother too, without ever spilling their secret or relying on anyone. 

   Until he hadn’t.

   And that was a reality he carried with him every day. That his mother was dead, and that it was his fault. That Octavia had nearly met the same fate, and it was his fault. All he could do was try down here, try to make up for it by keeping everyone else safe the way he’d failed to before. But like most things, it seemed Clarke did a better job of it. The same way she did a better job of bandaging the ragged gash on his arm without having to be asked. He watched her from the corners of his eyes, dark brown hues studying her profile as she set her focus on the task at hand. She looked so serious, yet still so at ease. It was natural to her, he realized. Helping people like this. Helping him. Even after she’d warned him to be careful. But reckless Bellamy had to be the one to climb the rafters to ensure the roof was properly sealed on the inside.
