The world teacher...!
Today is Jiddu Krishnamurti's birth anniversary. However, his fascinating story does not begin with his birth.
Instead, it begins with the birth of an organization called the Theosophical Society, founded in New York, in 1875 by a group of people including Annie Besant, Helena Blavatsky and Charles Leadbeater. Theosophy literally means "divine wisdom" and the society aimed to bridge the spiritual gap between the East and the West.
In 1882, its international headquarters shifted to Adyar, near Madras, now called Chennai.
The Society declared that its main purpose was to prepare humanity for the "coming of a World Teacher", an avataar of an advanced spiritual entity called the Maitreya, who periodically appears on Earth for the evolution of humankind. Enter Jiddu Krishnamurti.
JK was born in 1895 in Madanapalle, now in A.P, then in Madras. In 1909, when he was 14, his father used to work in the Theosophical society, Adyar, as a clerk. That's when Charles Leadbeater "spotted" him, and by the "aura" surrounding his head, was convinced that JK would be the world teacher mankind was waiting for.
So, Leadbeater and Annie Besant took guardianship of JK and his brother Nitya, after a long legal battle with his father, and established something called the Order of the Star in the East (OSE), with young JK as its head. His grooming began and the world waited for its teacher!
More dream stuff happens. Mary Dodge, an American millionairess, donates a part of her inheritance and JK becomes wealthy.
In 1922, when he was 37, JK went through a life-changing spiritual experience, which he called "mystical union."
In 1925, he lost his brother Nitya, which shook him to his core, yet 12 days later, he was "immensely quiet, radiant and free from emotions."
Over the next few years, JK changed. His thought process became progressively free of Theosophical society terminology. Finally in 1929, he cut loose from the OSE, from Annie Besant and Leadbeater and told the world - "Truth is a pathless land.... it cannot be reached through orders and societies.... I do not want followers.... My only desire is to set man free."
And till his death in 1986, aged 90, he spoke, wrote and taught the world as an individual, and not as a part or leader of any group or sect.
This post is my humble dedication to Jiddu Krishnamurthy, who was the quintessential Jnana Yogi.

Então será chamada opala. Continuando-se, submete-se a fuligem a uma experiência. No início, não se pode fazê-la branca. Mas, insistindo na experiência, afinal adquire brancura e torna-se a mais dura substância do mundo. Tendo sido negra, adquire a possibilidade de refletir todos os raios solares com um brilho impossível a qualquer outro sólido. Então nós o chamamos diamante. No final de tudo, a água purifica-se ou une-se. Para contentá-la, basta alcançar somente a forma de uma gota de orvalho. Mas, a insistência em alcançar a consistência mais perfeita fá-la cristalizar-se em forma de estrela. E por uma onça* de lodo, disponível no início, graças à economia política da competência, temos, pela economia política da cooperação, uma safira, uma opala e um diamante, engastados em uma estrela de neve."
