Post Now Project Rationale
‘Dictionaried’ is reflection of pop culture through the documentation of urban slang that is humorous and unfiltered. Urban slang is an important part of popculture. It is a reflection of of the speed and the power of pop culture today, especially with the help of the internet. A phrase not found in a dictionary can pop up over night on Facebook that may reflect current social mores and events around the word. An example of this is the death of Harambe, the gorilla at Cincinnati Zoo. Memes and phrases referencing Harambe popped up within minutes on Facebook, with 35 definitions of Harambe on urbandictionary.com. ‘Dictionaried’ aims to post a word a day for visitors to learn new urban vocabulary. It is different to a physical dictionary and online dictionary websites as the definitions of words can only be heard through an audio recording. Each word is spoken by a computer generated voice. This is also reflective of being online. It is a humorous approach as the serious computer voice contrasts the amusing slang words. The design of the website is simple and straight forward. The purpose of this is to appear as though it is an educational daily resource for new vocabulary. Â
