“what  are  you  doing?  shouldn't  you  be  off  with  your  little  girlfriend  right  now.”  she  was  taller  than  leyla  —  but  demeaning  her  in  the  smallest  of  ways  was  all  she  could  do  to  make  herself  feel  better.  that,  and  the  third  whiskey  sour  she  was  nursing.  “or  are  you  finally  done  with  the  romcom  dates?”  she's  not  bitter,  except  her  voice  and  face  make  it  obvious  she  is.

he  manages  to  keep  a  smile  on  his  face  until  they  get  to  his  childhood  bedroom  —  their  shared  space  for  the  next  few  days  before  dohyun  finally  lets  out  a  huff  and  sigh.  “if  you  wanna  leave,  i  get  it  ...  okay?  i  was  gonna  tell  them,  but  then  my  mom  kept  telling  me  i  was  so  lucky  to  have  you  and  that  finally  i  wasn't  a  loser.”  or  in  her  words,  having  a  future.  

just  friends.  just  friends  who  vacation  together,  stay  up  late  talking  about  parts  of  the  world  they  wanted  to  see,  listen  to  the  other  fall  asleep  when  dusk  was  on  the  horizon.  except,  maybe  the  last  part  was  just  him,  foolishly  going  along  with  it  all  and  ignoring  the  stuttering  heartbeat  that  came  along  with  being  close  to  them.  “it's  not  weird,  is  it?”  even  if  anyone  who'd  ever  seemed  to  hear  the  concept  thought  it  was,  he'd  take  their  opinion  as  the  truth.

“i'm  sure  you'll  get  ‘em  next  time.”  saccharine  tone  does  nothing  to  make  her  sound  sincere,  grin  on  nina’s  face  a  little  too  wide  to  be  anything  more  than  happy  about  the  ordeal.  crowds  that  were  once  abuzz  gradually  filter  out,  leaving  just  the  two  among  a  few  stragglers.  “second  place  …  you  should  be  proud  of  it.”

“what's  the  big  deal?  c'mon,  you  know  everyone  plays  things  up  for  views  —  that  whole  video  was  taken  out  of  context!”  maybe  minji  would  be  sympathetic  if  this  had  been  the  first  time.  except  it's  the  same  story,  same  defense  she  has  to  give  every  single  time.  “why  do  you  not  trust  me?”
