Assignment 1:

This person is your equivalent to an average user. What is their typical behavior when interacting with a website or UI? How would you build a site so that they did not need your help to navigate it? Discuss.

Answer: 

My average user is an adult over age 40. She usually looks a bit confused as to where to go first when visiting a new website, or being exposed to a new user interface (UI). She usually knows what tasks she wants to get done, but is usually unsure of how to do it. As a result I usually have to find out what task she wants to accomplish, then gently guide her through the process of using the new website or user interface. If I'm to build a website for this user so that they would not need my help to navigate it, I would do some research to find out the most common tasks that the average user needs when visiting the website, and ensure that buttons or links to those areas are more easily identifiable by the user. I would also include javascript pop up bubbles that contain simple instructions to guide the user. I would include one bubble to act as an introduction to the website, and include options within that bubble for the user to click on if she needs additional instructions. I could also include features like instruction bubbles popping up when the user uses their mouse to hover over an important part of the website. I think websites like Google and Yahoo use similar methods (information bubbles) when they add new features, or make changes to their web applications.

I was particularly interested in this article because I usually designed my layouts based on intuition and visual hierarchy, rather than based on the patterns discussed in this article. I was pleased to note that I was on the right path with my designs however, as the article indicates that the patterns discussed refer only to designs dominated by large blocks of text with little or no hierarchy.  The following quote from this article sums things up nicely, and adequately articulates my usual methodology of layout design : "Instead of trying to force your design into one of the patterns described, decide instead what information you want the viewer to see and through a series of focal points and design flow lead their eyes through your hierarchy of information. That’s really the only pattern you need to use."
