To explore the kinds of processes volcanoes actually generate, Syracuse University has a “Lava Lab” with a large furnace that they can use to melt rock. They can then expose that lava to all sorts of unique conditions to see the textures of lava flows and eruptions they generate.
This is an experiment showing a night-time hydrovolcanic eruption - idealizing what happens when lava hits water and the water immediately expands to steam. Here the lava is being jetted upwards by a constant stream of air to simulate the expansion due to steam. The worker to the right is keeping the gas stream clear of lava - come back in a bit for a video from that perspective.
