Posting my notes for an A:TLAxA3! AU (that I do not have the willpower to make into a real actual fic) for @nofucksgivennovember. (Context here.) Will I one day revive this from the fic graveyard? Perhaps, but I have no intentions of necromancy for the time being.
Since this is a Unit of an AU, I'm starting with how I've set up the world, and the roles each character plays, starting with Izumi and Spring. After I post all the character roles, I'll post the major plot arcs.
Each troupe is a new generation of Team Avatar. The Troupe leaders are the avatars.
Izumi: Weak firebender with an unusually strong connection to the Spirit World. Outlives Sakuya, long enough to serve as Tenmaās mentor for a short time. After her death, she continues to guide Tenma from the Spirit World and is one of the first points of contact in the Spirit World for Banri and Tsumugi.
Each Avatar has a bending weakness based on their personality, usually is the opposing element but not always. Their weaknesses are as follows:
Sakuya: Earth
Having a solid Presence, facing problems head on, confrontation, rather than running away/pretending they donāt exist.
Tenma: Air
openmindedness, flexibility (Tenma as someone who adheres to tradition, values routine
Banri: Water
While he can waterbend and is proficient at it, it is difficult for him to master - the issue is more mental than anything else. āIām already better than everyone else bc I can bend multiple elements, why does it matter if i master it?ā
As the next element heās supposed to learn, this is the first thing he ever actually struggles with - character growth opportunity?
Tsumugi: Fire
Decisiveness, being on the offensive as a strategy, striking first, rather than waiting/going with the flow
Spring cycle
Setting
Generally the same as in atla, except no Air Nomad genocide. Fire Nation and Earth Kingdom are the two major world powers, while Water Tribe and Air Nomads have smaller populations.
Avatar: Sakuya
Air Nomad. After he was orphaned, he was sent to one of the Air Temples to undergo training as a monk.
tbhhhhhhhh heās kind of just Aang in Sakuyaās body because like every protag is an ENFP blank slate with basically the same problems and character growth arc
Because he joined the monastery late, they did not do the Avatar test on him, and thus did not know he was the Avatar until he was 16, when he accidentally firebends. This proves to be lucky, as Reni/God Troupe started searching for the Avatar. As long as they keep Sakuya on the dl, they can buy some time to properly train and prepare him for his avatar duties
Izumi is found/hired to teach him firebending (for some reason? they donāt have access to an actual firebending master quite yet. maybe sheās at the Air Temple for finding her father purposes, so she just happens to be the nearest firebender at the time, though everyone knows that eventually theyāll have to find him a proper teacher.)
Bending mastery order: Air, Fire, Earth, Water
Masumi
Fire nation. His parents are high-ranking nobles who donāt pay much attention to him.
Izumi takes Sakura on an educational field trip to a Fire Nation city so he can learn more about the culture, in hopes that it will help him with his bending.
Masumi spots Izumi and starts following them around. When Izumi discovers that heās a talented fire bender in his own right, she asks him to start teaching Sakuya (āanything for you, Izumiā ā,,yeah okā)
While Izumi probably makes him ask his parents before joining them to go back to the Air Temple, I also think it would be hilarious if he pulled a fe3h Lindhardt and ran off in the middle of the night, and also like. robbed his parents.
Tsuzuru:Ā
Earth Kingdom. Born to a large merchant family. Largely in charge of the education and upbringing of his brothers, as his parents are too busy to do so.
Tries to teach Sakuya earthbending but has difficulties, since itās Sakuyaās weakness. Realises very quickly that he is unable to teach him with his earthbending style (despite many attempts and coming up with different strategies) (Enter: Citron)
[why does he leave his family to join Team Avatar? figure out.] Often seen writing letters back to his family.
As the only one of Spring Team Avatar with a working brain cell, he becomes their strategist.
Citron
Travelling Earth bender (not from Earth kingdom). Teaches Sakuya different style of Earthbending (Comes into conflict with Tsuzuru, who objects)
Joins Team Avatar bc he feels like itās his destiny, that his life and theirs are going to be closely intertwined. Also he is hungry and Izumi is generous with their food.
Itaru
Northern Water tribe. Team Avatar travels to the North Pole so that Sakuya can learn from a water bending master.
At the time, heās a particularly unenthusiastic waterbending student, who is tasked with showing Team Avatar around the city and explaining their customs - to try to fix his shut-in tendencies
During his time with TA, they make him feel like he actually belongs with them, which is the first time heās ever felt accepted for who he is. Sakuyaās determination and bright spirit also inspires him to be more diligent about his waterbending studies
When itās time for TA to leave, he chooses to go with them.
Chikage
Fire Nation. Starts off as a member of the Fire Nation secret police (? or whatever the equivalent is. thereās probably a secret police right.)

I've been working on this for a long time, and I think it's finally time to Release it. This headcanon is a description of the languages of the regions that the TWST boys are from. I do not "create" any languages or give them names, beyond what I think are generic descriptions. (I do want to do something like that one day, but that is a future project beyond the scope of these headcanons.)
The regions are listed in alphabetical order, with the characters from that region listed underneath. Some characters have additional notes of extra tidbits of information that I thought of, some do not.
Although this piece of trivia is not in the game, the NRC operates a translation spell, allowing all students to understand each other, despite their linguistic differences. The following headcanons are my thoughts on what the linguistic landscape of Twisted Wonderland, beyond NRC, could look like.
Briar Valley - fae language - they all speak the same language (there is not just one fae language, but since the characters from Diasomnia are from the same region/basically grew up together, they speak the same language).
Malleus Draconia
Silver - Silver has difficulty making some of the sounds bc he is a human and he just. doesnāt know how to move his mouth to make some of the sounds present in his fae language.
Sebek Zigvolt - partially bilingual. heās picked up bits and pieces of his fatherās native language, but he does not use it very much
Lilia Vanrouge
Coral Sea - different merpeople species have different languages, but Standard Mermish serves as a lingua franca. Some species may speak different languages but they are mutually intelligible, depending on geographic location, how often the species interact with each other, and how closely related they are.
Azul Ashengrotto - Standard Mermish, Octomer dialect at home (and it slips out in high stress situations)
Jade Leech - Standard Mermish, Eelmer dialect at home
Floyd Leech - Standard Mermish, Eelmer dialect at home (is more likely to use it in outside situations than Jade)
Island of Woe - this place is hidden, almost completely cut off from the world. Language in the outside world would have likely developed in some WILD ways, due to contact with other cultures and innovation from younger generations. However, depending on when the islandās inhabitants left (perhaps they were a group from the Shaftlands?), the language on the Island of Woe remains almost frozen in time on that point. Idia grew up speaking an archaic version of one of the Shaftlandās languages, almost completely incomprehensible to its modern form, and it is only through his extensive time on the internet that he has access to language in its modern form.

Ortho Shroud - Ortho is a robot and would likely be able to download multiple language packs
Queendom of Roses - United under one monarchy, the residents of the Queendom of Roses all speak one standardised language. While regional variants exist, day-to-day matters, such as schooling, most professional work, government affairs, etc. are conducted in this standard language. Differing attitudes towards regional language variants exist - while some look down upon speakers of those variants, viewing them as uneducated, many are proud of the way they speak, as it is a symbol of their heritage and identity.

Scalding Sands - As there is a large coastline, there are many port cities, facilitating trade from all around the world. Its river and canal system also ensures that merchants and travellers are able to travel freely beyond the ports. As such, the Scalding Sands is home to speakers of many different languages. However, the languages native to the Scalding Sands tend to be descended from fantasy Arabic. There is much debate whether or not these are separate languages or simply variations of one language (the answer changing depending on who you ask). As with real-world Arabic, there is a standardised form, mostly used in formal settings and by tourists ā it is rarely used in day-to-day life, as the regional language is mostly preferred by speakers.
Both Kalim and Jamil, due to their social positions, are fluent in both the standard and regional form of the language. They have also received schooling in some of the other major languages of Twisted Wonderland. Surprisingly (or perhaps not so), Kalim tends to be better at foreign languages, as he isnāt afraid to go out and converse with speakers, even if his speech is riddled with mistakes (you canāt learn if you donāt try, after all).
Shaftlands - large region with lots of linguistic diversity. The Shaftlands is divided into provinces, each having a distinct language and culture, and while there may be some mutual intelligibility, the lingua franca is the language spoken in the capital city.
Cater Diamond - moved around a lot, has picked up bits and pieces of many of the Shaftlands languages, as well as some from other regions
Jack Howl - In addition to the primary language in his province, wolf beastmen have their own dialect (which then have their own variants, depending on how isolated their packs are)
Vil Schoenheit
Epel Felmier - Being from Harveston, he speaks a rural dialect of the language in the province where he lives. If it wasnāt for the translation spell, one can easily imagine a Dr. Doolittle story arc between him and Vil.
Sunset Savanna - As with the Coral Sea, the languages of beastmen are varied, some more mutually intelligble with each other than others, depending on how closely the species are related and how much they interact with each other.Ā
Leona Kingscholar - has received at least some schooling in foreign languages, although his information retention is questionable
Ruggie Bucchi - can understand more beastmen languages than Leona, as he had been exposed to more types of them during his childhood and adolescence.
Rook Hunt - His family originally came from the Shaftlands, although theyāve lived in Sunset Savanna for long enough that their ancestral language has not been passed down. Can also speak real-world French, for some reason, which gets past the NRC translation spell, for some reason.

It is clear that he has a soft spot for you in the way he goes out of his way to do things for you - staying late at the office? He spends a lot of time talking himself up, motivating himself to finally make a move. TODAY will be the day he tells you about his feelings. TODAY will be the day he asks you out on a date. Somehow, this never ends up working out. Either he chickens out at the last second, abruptly changing the topic as he sweats profusely, or he does manage to ask you on that dateā¦but as friends.
Whether you notice depends on how perceptive you are and how willing you are to believe that the way your very good friend and colleague treats you is special in any way. After all, friends hang out with each other outside of work, right? Friends take you out to dinner at that new restaurant youād been eyeing, walk you home, lend you their jacketā¦right?

Christmas, a time of holiday cheer, a joyous occasion to spend with your loved ones. On Christmas Day, you and Miles plan to have the rest of the crew over - Phoenix, Maya, Trucy, Apollo, Franziska, and of course, Detective Gumshoe. But today, Christmas Eve, is for just the two of you, and Miles wouldnāt have it any other way.
You had insisted that the holiday be celebrated at your apartment this year, rather than at his, as you had done in years previous. Miles had agreed, eager to experience your own holiday traditions. Then perhaps the next year, you could combineā but of course, heās getting ahead of himself.
Still, he canāt help but wonder.
On December 23rd, Miles learns that Christmas at yours means grocery store rotisserie chicken, too dry for either of your liking, already clear to Miles even as he accompanies you to pick it up from the grocery store.
Nothing that canāt be fixed with a healthy spoonful of melted butter, you had remarked brightly.
āMy parents werenāt really holiday people,ā you explain on the afternoon of December 24th, as you scoop a few cups of rice into the rice cooker. After filling the pot with water, you close the lid and turn it on. The rice cooker beeps cheerily, which Miles barely hears as you turn back to him with a smile. āSo I had to make up a few things as I went along after I moved out.ā
Miles, used to elaborate multi-course meals cooked by a chef, nods blankly in response.
āIām sorry, I know youāre used to fancier meals ā maybe we should have done this at yoursāā
āNo, no,ā he says quickly, interrupting you. He pauses, searching for the right words to reassure you, though none come to mind. āI like this,ā he continues, albeit awkwardly. āI like...spending time with you. Like this.ā
Perhaps his delivery needed work, but he was telling the truth. Thereās a certain sense of warmth he gets from cooking (or rather, assembling) this meal with you, that he had not felt in a long time - not when celebrating the holiday at his own estate, and certainly not when he had been living with Manfred von Karma.
You looks at him for a moment longer, before nodding, the smile returning to your face. He knows everything is truly fine when you prod his shoulder. āYou could have made that sound a little less forced, like youāre not being held at gunpoint,ā you tease.
As Miles had predicted, the chicken is dry, even with the butter.
Unexpectedly however, he finds that he does not mind. Not when he gets to listen to you talk animatedly about your week, excitement evident in your voice as you share tidbits of conversations with friends, new ideas, stories you had gathered in time spent apart from him. Not when you laugh, long and hard, at his jokes that had others rolling their eyes. And definitely not when you put on a holiday-themed playlist while you clean up the dirty dishes, lightly bumping your hip against his as you hand him a freshly washed dish for him to dry and put away.
After the dishes have been cleaned up, leftovers packed for later, you brings out one last surprise - a pumpkin pie, another grocery store delicacy. Although Miles is sceptical at first, you simply dollop a large helping of whipped cream on top of his slice and slide him the plate, and he supposes he can take yet another step out of his comfort zone.
Miles learns that perhaps he should trust his instincts a little less.
To finish off the night, you and Miles sit side by side on the couch, forks clinking against plates as you enjoy you dessert, a Christmas movie playing on the television. Itās some animated movie, a cartoon from your childhood, which of course, no Christmas is complete without.
He finds himself barely paying attention, focusing instead on the weight of your head resting against his chest, rising and falling ever so slightly with each breath he takes. Slowly, almost carefully, he moves his hand to take yours, threading your fingers together while he pretends to be engrossed in the movieās plot.
His actions earn him a smile, your head tilting upwards to look at him, before you lean up to press a kiss to his chin, trailing your lips down his jaw to his neck. A promise of more, later, as long as heās patient enough to see the movie to the end.
Once the screen fades to black and the credits roll, you stretch, letting out a satisfied groan before turning to him. You swing one of your legs over his lap, straddling him as you gently cup his face in your hands.
āThanks for spending Christmas with me, Miles,ā you murmur, your voice soft and low. He nods in response, words failing him once more, though heās saved by you leaning in to kiss him.
And in that moment, he knows that he would happily do anything to spend the rest of his Christmases with you.

Kuro
Chances are, thereās someone in his circus troupe who is either from or has travelled to the States, so Kuro already knows a bit about your country. However, he is always eager to learn even more, especially from someone with a different perspective.
He would love hearing stories about what everyday life is like and trying your regional food as well.
In return, he is always eager to show you around the Capital and tell you all sorts of stories about the places in Japan that you decide to visit (perhaps even taking you on a little day trip out to some of the smaller cities to experience the local cultures there as well).
Toichiro
As a part of high society, he is already familiar with some of the customs that have already been imported to Japan. He is mostly interested in hearing about art movements, fashion trends, and any political drama you may be aware of. (While he pretends to be above petty gossip, he secretly is quite nosy.)
True to his mischievous nature, heāll try to tell you increasingly outlandish lies about Japan, just to see how much youāre willing to believe.
Shizuki
Whatever he knows of Western cultures, he learned as a result of being Toichiroās valet.
Heās not particularly inclined to learning about the US, but since he is interested in learning more about you and getting closer to you, the conversation would naturally flow in that direction.
If you find yourself getting homesick, he will do his best to research whatever it is youāre missing, then source the closest things he can get to it.
He would also start trying to learn English, discreetly borrowing books from Ginnojo and practicing with Kuro, making sure that he has some sort of foundation in the language before going to you and asking for help.
Koga
While his knowledge of the US is limited, heās had some business dealings with Westerners. Ultimately, he prefers Japanese culture - food, clothing, etc. - but believes it is important to be aware of the world and learn about other places.
Like Toichiro, he is also curious about the latest trends to come out of the States, although he is more interested in inventions and technology than in art.
He is amused by the stories of urban legends and cryptids that come out of the States, knowing that Japan has comparable ones. As an Ayakashi himself, heās sure thereās some truth to them, but he also sees the beauty in humans, no matter where they come from, creating stories and sharing them with their friends and loved ones.
