So, latober day 10 was "Moon". Thinking about what I wanted to do I did this.
[ID: A lined piece of paper with some writing and numbers, at the center, a simple hand drawn circle. End ID.]
And I loved it. But it's not... I can't post this for inktober. It's not even on drawing paper, or thought out. But when I looked at it I saw the moon and I didn't want to do something else. So I did a zine about it. If it read as pretentious, it probably is. I don't think it's bad to do something pretending you're better than you are.
[ID: A picture of a cover of a zine. It's a circle, in black ink. End ID.]
[Video description: The zine, with a hand turning the pages. It's a dialogue entitled "Misquoting Peter Brook at an art exhibit that shows only a pen drawn circle on a piece of off-white paper. The characters are the interviewer, in red, and the artist, in black.
Interviewer: Quite an unusual exhibit. Not like nothing you’ve done before. Do you consider this your first venture into conceptual art?
Artist: No. Not at all. The opposite, really. I don’t have a concept.
(Next page)
Artist: Maybe “ideal art” ?
Interviewer: WDYM
(Next page)
Artist: That’s Plato, right? The world of ideas.
Interviewer: Yes.
Artist: Yes. Ideal, as belonging to ideas. ! You know the quote “Translating poetry is like trying to taxidermize a moonlight?”
Interviewer: No.
Artist: 1: You should always try to taxidermize moonlight. 2: Immortalizing something is only made possible by making it dead first. 3: Fear of murder is useless in art.
Interviewer: And that’s what you tried to do here?
(Next page)
Artist: No.
Interviewer: What did you try to do?
Artist: Nothing. I had to draw the moon, I did this, I found it striking. Then I found it lazy and lacking, and I thought I had to do more for it to be worth anything. Do you know what laziness really is?
Interviewer: No.
Artist: Me neither.
(Next page)
Artist: I got scared. It was something, mine, and I thought I’d ruin it if I tried any more. So I stopped. Are you familiar with Peter Brooks’s empty space?
Interviewer: Yes.
Artist: O.K.
Inter-viewer: So. You got scared. And you chose emptiness — all possibilities unrealized and coexisting — over creative pursuit. Is that laziness? A public abowal of artistic cowardice?
Artist: No. It’s beautiful.
Next page, another simple ink circle. End Video description.]
My phone camera is still terrible, but hopefully some of this comes across. Maybe I'll get to scan this someday, first zine I did, it was fun.
