Alfonso CuarĂłn’s Mexican film Roma marked off many firsts when it received 10 nominations to this year’s Oscars. Not only did Gabriela Rodriguez become the first Latina to receive a nomination for Best Picture, the film also snagged the first ever nomination without box-office grosses, landing Netflix their first nomination in the category. Roma has been so successful that a 15-track project, Music Inspired by the Film ROMA. will feature original songs and convers inspired by CuarĂłn’s film, separate from the official soundtrack released last year. The collection of tracks was curated by CuarĂłn himself and it features musical heavyweights from both the English and Spanish-speaking worlds. Roma, Black Panther and Crazy Rich Asians’ commercial and critical success underscores that diverse stories sell because what is “representation” for a “niche” audience is taken as innovation by “mainstream” audiences.
