People are having strong responses to Amy Sherman-Palladino’s promised final four words in Gilmore Girls
Though fans couldn't wait to find out the ending, Lauren Graham, who plays Lorelai Gilmore, wasn't aware "it was a thing," she told The Hollywood Reporter. "I didn’t know until halfway through filming this that those existed and then Amy told them to me on the set. I was surprised for a minute and then it made complete sense." Other cast mates strongly disagreed.
WARNING: SPOILERS BELOW!
The following post is in regards to the Gilmore Girls: A Year in the Life ending. So, if you have not yet seen any of these episodes, please stop reading here. This post is meant for those who would like to discuss what they have already watched and are desperately trying to absorb. Please no complaints. Okay, so, based on what I have gathered, I believe the code to this somewhat shocking and unsatisfying ending has been cracked. When Gilmore Girls first began, Lorelai was 32 and Rory was 16. Rory is now 32, or at least early "thirty-something." Rory is now also pregnant. This emotional reveal from Rory was astounding, yet simultaneously anticipated. Personally, I predicted that the final four words would be: "Her name is Lorelai" as Rory and Jess introduce Lorelai IV (the newest Lorelai) to Lorelai II (the quick-witted mother of Rory who we cannot help but to adore). Also, there would be a pocket-folded paperback book on the nightstand where Jess slept, because, why not? It is Jess Mariano we are talking about here. Anyway, for all those who have seen all four episodes or skipped ahead to the ending, here is what we were not necessarily shown, but what I believe was intended with this ending. Rory reveals to Lorelai that she is pregnant. Moments before this, Jess was last seen on the Gilmore girls' front porch, taking another glance at Rory. To Jess, this was a "see-you-tomorrow, I still love you" glance, but to us this was so much more. This was the ending of the final episode of this mini revival series. While this was obviously a precious, endearing glance, it was not like Jess was going to leave again before Luke and Lorelai's wedding...or was he? I do not think he would have since he has grown up so much since his first couple seasons as a Gilmore Guy, even though he captured many hearts within minutes. Either way, he just had to look at Rory again. He had to capture her beauty even if they were to only spend one day apart. I also noticed that Rory and Jess were standing parallel to each other when they and the soon-to-be-married couple, Luke and Lorelai, were being traditional with their wedding. "You are not supposed to see the bride before the wedding!" Kirk appeared as well, but it is hard not to take note of Jess and Rory's appearance in this situation. Coincidence or foreshadowing? Rory is most likely pregnant with Logan's child, unless she hooked up with Jess somehow, or if Dean got super turned on by her grip on the baking soda and cheated on another wife. Anyway, there is no way the Wookie could have impregnated her since that happened either in the Spring or Summer episode. Also, she and Logan were definitely not sober when they went on that spontaneous trip with beloved college friends. Rory may have seemed a bit reckless in this revival series, but not enough to consciously drink while pregnant. Chilton, Yale, common sense and medical facts taught her well, after all. I do not think she is pregnant with Jess's child. I think that she is pregnant with Logan's since he is supposed to be perceived as her Christopher. Lorelai was always reckless with Christopher and she did not consider her morals when he was involved with other women. Lorelai may have had become pregnant as a teenager, but Rory's choice to have an affair with an engaged man behind another woman's back was juvenile. No matter if Logan was forced into this marriage by his wealthy family or not, Rory should have known better. She hurt Lindsay incredibly and felt terrible about her decision to lose her virginity to Dean. However, when Rory is with Logan, she is unable to think clearly and consider each delicate outcome. Much like when Lorelai is with Christopher. Lorelai married Christopher without Rory's presence since she was blindly manipulated by his charm and their undeniable connection. She also engaged in other activities she never would have had she not been so intrigued with Christopher and captivated by his "bad boy" demeanor and "careless" attitude. This is not to say that Logan would not make a good father, but Rory's conversation with Christopher proves that even she has doubt about Logan's capabilities. Christopher took work-related calls over finishing this deep conversation with his daughter. Logan had always been on the go as well and puts work and his family name before Rory. He has not yet abandoned his family name to be with Rory, so I honestly do not think he ever would sacrifice this for her, even if he truly does love her. The intent with this ending was to explain that Rory would eventually end up with Jess and have a long-lasting struggle with her feelings for Logan. While Logan makes her feel "youthful" and they have fun together, as Rory said they always do during the last episode, Jess uncovers Rory's passions. Jess will always be passionate about Rory and her future and Rory usually finds what she has wanted when she turns to Jess. Yes, Rory did have a "reflex" when calling Logan, but that was because he had manipulated her emotions to a point that was giving her false hope. Unfortunately, Rory will continue to struggle with Logan's personal life that she wishes she could change, but Jess will be there to pick up the pieces, despite how cliché it sounds. Jess may not always be in town like Luke is for Lorelai, but consistency in his feelings for Rory is an undeniable fact: he will always love and pine after her. I do believe that Jess and Rory are meant to be and this ending only affirmed this belief of mine. Or should I say, "firmed the sperm"? (Paris was amazing too, by the way, as always.) One last thing: Logan kept trying to give Rory the key to his family's house in Maine. Christopher also tried to buy affection from Rory and Lorelai in the original series when he was flooded with cash after his grandfather (or father?) passed away. Christopher also mentioned his riches within seconds of his introduction in the revival series. He proved to Rory that not every planter-of-seed is capable of true fatherhood. All Rory wanted was Logan's love and affection, which is why she could never accept Logan's huge gift-offerings. Even when she rejected his marriage proposal, he did not take time to comprehend that she needed to start her career as well, since that is what she always envisioned. She did not go through three years at Chilton and four years at Yale (seven years of Paris) to follow him and possibly become a housewife. This is not to say that being a mother and housewife is terrible or anything. It is just not what Rory wanted at the time. He also should have realized that she did not want to be proposed to in front of a bunch of rich snobby people she barely knew. But I do understand he was trying to make a romantic gesture and to make the moment entirely memorable, which was sweet. However, Jess has never had to buy Rory's love. He may not be rich in cash, but he is certainly flooded with pure, unbreakable emotion for Rory Gilmore. His love for her is an unceasing stream - much like Luke to Lorelai. Eventually, Luke and Lorelai found their way to one another. Hopefully that is what was implied with this "full circle" ending. Some may say that it is gross to think of Jess and Rory as a couple now due to Jess's uncle and Rory's mother being married, but they did not grow up as family members, so they will never truly see each other as relatives anyway. I just spilled my thoughts about the ending out for you all. Obviously I did not think of the general things all on my own, but I did examine more pieces of the ending with my own recollections. I apologize if there is any awkward phrasing. I do pay attention to sentence structure and grammar, but I also just watched six hours of Gilmore Girls and have been an emotional wreck ever since. It is also 2 a.m. here. Now I sound like a Taylor Swift time setting. Anyway, goodnight lovelies! I hope this makes sense! :) Who is ready for another season?! I know I am!!!!! As a writer, I am appreciative of this brilliant ending. But as a fan, I am desperate for more material and proper closure. (Aka, Rory and Jess together at last and this beautiful baby's birth.)
