I use the cardboard template and the awl to poke holes on the covers and signatures.
I use 8/2 cotton weaving yarn (wakes with beeswax) to do a two needle Coptic binding. I start with the middle set of holes, it makes the top and bottom sets easier to do and o get a better result overall.
