how to spot the difference between whizzer and larry: one is a massie douchebag
I never like to go on rants when it comes to character interpretations because people having opinions is great, but when I see people calling Larry (The Boys In The Band) and Whizzer Brown (Falsettos) the same character; it kind of rubs me the wrong way.
While both characters do follow the setup of having their partner leave their other relationship to be with them while they stay ‘noncommittal’ (putting this in quotes for Larry’s sake), Whizzer cheated on Marvin to try and not become attached to him and to ultimately have a sense of control in the relationship which was holding the fact he could leave at any time over Marvin’s head.
On the other hand, Larry is a non-monogamous character and doesn’t cheat on Hank to have a sense of control. He’s not solely committed to Hank because that would make him unhappy. Larry admits that he loves Hank, he’s not using his polyamory as avoidance for his feelings, but he can’t conform to a standard monogamous relationship because that’s not who he is.
Essentially what I’m trying to say is that both characters may look similar on paper, but through looking at their mannerisms, they shouldn’t be called the same or carbon copies.
Forgot I had this drawing but I’m pretty proud of it, Larry from ‘The Boys In The Band’
