I Woke Up at 3am on a Glacier. Here's Why It Was Worth It.
you're standing at 5,106 metres. the air is thin. prayer flags are whipping in the wind. and right in front of you filling the entire sky is Mt. Manaslu. the 8th highest mountain on earth.
that's Larke La Pass, and it's the reason people fly to Nepal, walk through remote villages for two weeks, and wake up at 3am in freezing darkness to cross a glacier.
and honestly? every single step is worth it. 🏔️
so what even is the Manaslu Circuit Trek?
it's one of Nepal's best-kept secrets. less crowded than Everest, more dramatic than Annapurna, and home to some of the most untouched Tibetan Buddhist culture left on the planet. the full route is 14–16 days from Kathmandu, winding through remote gorges, ancient monasteries, and yak herder villages before delivering you to that legendary pass.
what you'll actually see from the top of Larke La:
🗻 Mt. Manaslu glowing gold at sunrise, right in front of your face 🏔️ Himlung Himal, Cheo Himal, Kang Guru stretching across the horizon 🌄 Annapurna II appearing as you begin your descent ❄️ Glaciers and frozen valleys spreading out in every direction
the sky at 5,000m is a shade of blue that doesn't exist at sea level. i'm not being dramatic. it just isn't.
things nobody tells you before you go:
summit day starts at 3am in the dark. in the cold. on a glacier. pack your microspikes. the descent to Bimthang takes HOURS after you've already been walking for 7+. trekking poles are not optional. the village of Samagaon and the 500-year-old Pungen Gompa monastery might end up being your favourite memory of the whole trip. Tsum Valley (a secret side route that opened to tourists in 2008) is still barely visited and genuinely feels like stepping through time. October is the sweet spot. crystal clear skies, stable trails, the mountains sharpest they'll ever be.
📍 Pass elevation: 5,106m / 16,752ft 🗓️ Trek length: 12–16 days from Kathmandu 💰 Main permit cost: $75–$100 USD/person per week 👥 Requires: a licensed Nepali guide (minimum 2 trekkers per group solo travelers can join group departures) 🌸 Best seasons: March–May (rhododendrons!) and September–November
this is not an easy trek. it's not supposed to be. but it's absolutely achievable for anyone who trains, acclimatizes properly, and goes with an experienced guide who knows the mountain.
and when you stand at the top and look out at Manaslu rising into the morning sky you'll understand why people come back to Nepal again and again.
