Baby Ro back in her hula days circa 1981. My teacher went to Hawaii to study and brought the dance back with her and taught us how to tell stories with our hands and bodies. We performed for private parties and city functions and did our best (in the 1980s Bay Area suburbs)to share the beautiful art forms and stories of the islands. It was my favorite of all the dance styles I learned and as an adult I took some classes from Hawaiian teachers, though by then I could barely keep up. Polynesian dancers are incredibly strong and have such stamina and grace. I developed a love for Hawaiian culture and history back then and today I shared that love with my students to celebrate #apiheritagemonth Dance is one of the best ways we can honor our past and it’s such an important part of history. And now I’m daydreaming about the islands. It’s been 20 years since I’ve been there. Maybe I’ll do a run on Oahu with @onepeloton today? #lapseddancer https://www.instagram.com/p/COi5e6KDthk/?igshid=18twicq8ma3ow
