This is the LANE4 plan brochure for Ames Campustown Revitalization. I'll give my opinion about the information that it contains.

1. I haven't been able to find a more detailed plan than the vague and dumbed-down one in the brochure. That's what bothers me, probably because I'm in CRP and want details details details.

2. Eventually, every single current building in the white area will be torn down. There are numerous buildings in that area now, but the plan shows what looks to me like an enormous effort to consolidate building space. Leave room for additional businesses that want to come years from now, consider this future scenario: all the 'revitalized' area in Campustown is occupied, but a business is insistent on locating there. Where will any room be? Prime commercial/retail space is occupied by the insane amount of parking space. Segue to 3

3. Some buildings' replacements will be a parking lot. There is going to be a shit ton of parking. Since consolidation is such a pressing issue, maybe consolidate the two parking structures into one? The amount of parking that Campustown has right now doesn't seem to deter people from getting there somehow anyways. It's because actual campus is right across the street, thus not warranting the usage of a car at all, and people literally live in Camputown. In general, Ames is very easy to get around in sans car.

4. Established businesses and unused space (There are two buildings that used to be movie theaters! Reuse the vacant one...oh my god that would be awesome: MST3K, Rocky Horror Picture Show, Grindhouse, etc) will be gone via eminent domain. It's reminiscent of urban renewal many years ago, when tearing everything down and starting over was thought to be the best idea, but left howling urban wastelands in the long run.

5. Dear LANE4, how much time did you physically spend in Campustown before coming up with the plan? I'm sorry if that sounded snarky, it wasn't meant to be. I seriously just want to know how intimate you became with this area that is so near and dear to ISU students. It's the only Campustown that we have.

6. Dear Current Campustown owners, stand together as a community and fight for what's right. Obviously you know this. Who is going to own the buildings that will replace yours? Not you. That speaks for itself.

To conclude, this is happening too fast. This plan seems too cookie-cutter. There is nothing to reflect the uniqueness that this neighborhood embodies.
