A fine little skink friend, presumed Lampropholis delicata. Several dozen inhabit what I call lizard alley - an artificial gulley created between my house and a retaining wall that receives ample light morning and afternoon at different ends, with a great deal of leaf litter from overhanging trees. The skinks cohabit with the bugs from yesterday's post, a variety of ants, and as many springtails and co as you can shake a stick at. There was a small-eyed eastern black snake nearby when we moved in but it was injured and had to be removed for treatment and released, so presumably we have accidentally removed their major predator and Lizard Alley is now a paradise disturbed only by birds and the periodic intrusion of a large creature with a single giant black glossy eye that stares at them.

Allengreerus jackyhoserae is a species of common small skink native to south-east Australia, mainly in southern Victoria and near Melbourne’s east.  It is also known under the genus name Lampropholis as Lampropholis jackyhoserae. It used to be treated as a population of the better known Lampropholis delicata, now also placed in Allengreerus Hoser, 2009, but recently obtained DNA evidence showed wide divergence and hence the full species treatment of the lizard.  It was originally described by Raymond Hoser as a subspecies of the better known animal A. delicata, which has a type locality of somewhere in north-east Queensland. learn more at:  http://www.herp.net
