LA MEME GANG & Afro Trap... In 2015, Texas based Ghanaian music maker Dex Kwasi released a music project that sounded foreign yet familiar. Familiar because it had a dose of trap, a sound that was on the ascendancy globally but foreign because he had altered the sound with some Afro synth, and that was new to the GH music scene. This new sound was dubbed “Afro Trap.” Writer Phiona Okunu writes that “ In the wake of Trap’s seemingly infinite global ascendancy, expect to see more and more African sub-genres pairing up with Southern rap’s popular offshoot. The likes of Dex Kwasi will turn this from a trend into more permanent evidence of the way Black cultures around the world overlap and resemble each other.” And true to what Phiona wrote, Afro Trap is on the ascendancy in Ghana, and with the emergence of groups like La MeMe Gang, the genre is here to stay. La MeMe Gang, a collective of five rappers, is a good testimony of how to adopt a sound, own it and make it a trend.
