On last week's show we shared some of our favorites of salsa artists from the 60s, 70s, and beyond! With Latinx/Latine Heritage Month taking place now, we wanted to highlight this genre that originated in Caribbean and Latin American communities across many countries, including in the US, and quickly became popular internationally, especially in West and Central Africa. La Lupe aka La Yiyiyi aka La Reina de la Canción Latina aka The Queen of Latin Soul (pictured above) was an Afro-Cuban artist born in Santiago de Cuba. She became a well-known performer in Havana before moving to New York in the early 60s, where she released more than 20 albums (at least 5 gold albums) and worked with artists like Mongo Santamaría and Tito Puente. She had a huge repertoire that included salsa and so much more. For example, on her 1969 album "La Lupe Es La Reina", you can hear her classic bolero "Puro Teatro", an Afro-Cuban bembé celebrating her Santería faith "Guaguancó Bembe", and a cover of "That's The Way It's Gonna Be" written by protest/folk singers Phil Ochs and Bob Gibson. Talk about range! La Lupe was a daring artist whose music challenged expectations of her day, but she stood her ground and blazed her own trail ❤ Full Playlist: *Orquesta Revé "Ruñidera" [CUBA] *Pete Rodriguez "I Like It (I Like It Like That)" [USA/PUERTO RICO] *La Lupe "Puro Teatro" [CUBA] *Celia & Johnny "Quimbara" [CUBA/DOMINICAN REPUBLIC] *Johnny Pacheco "El Diablo" [DOMINICAN REPUBLIC/USA] *Rodolfo y su Tipica "La Colegiala" [COLOMBIA] *Grupo Niche "Cali Pachanguero" [COLOMBIA] *Joe Arroyo "Inocente" [COLOMBIA] *Sophy "Desordenados" [PUERTO RICO] *Yumuri y sus Hermanos "Mi Salsa Tiene Candela" [CUBA] *Celina y Reutilio "Santa Bárbara (Viva Changó)" [CUBA] *Mon Rivera y su Orquesta "Lluvia con nieve" [PUERTO RICO] *Pupi Legarreta "El Platanal de Bartolo" [CUBA] *Fruko y sus Tesos "Salsa na ma" [COLOMBIA] *Boncana "Descarga Boncana" [MALI] *Star Band de Dakar "Guajira Ven" [SENEGAL] *Gnonnas Pedro & His Dadjes Band "Azo N'Kplon Doun Nde (El Toro)" [BENIN] *Laba Sosseh "Diamoule Mawo" [GAMBIA] *José Missamou "Son sabrosito" [CONGO] #lalupe #queenoflatinsoul (at KCSB-FM 91.9 in Santa Barbara) https://www.instagram.com/p/CUTfF34KJsk/?utm_medium=tumblr
