declan  lynch  does  everything  purposefully.  he  wears  gray  suits,  purposefully.  he  eats  protein  bars,  purposefully.  he  gets  his  hair  cut  the  same  way  every  time,  purposefully.  he  dates  vapid  blondes  that  are  using  him  just  as  much  as  he  is  using  them,  purposefully.  he  keeps  his  heart  guarded  &  his  true  self  shrouded  in  secrecy,  purposefully.

PURPOSEFUL,  /ˈpəːpəsfʊl,ˈpəːpəsf(ə)l/,  adj.  :  HAVING  OR  SHOWING  GREAT  DETERMINATION  OR  RESOLVE  ;  INTENTIONAL.

declan  lynch  wasn’t  born  bland  &  unseasoned  ;  he’d  moulded  himself  into  it,  for  safety’s  sake.  he’d  fooled  everyone  into  believing  it,  even  ronan.  EVEN  HIMSELF.  you  tell  a  lie  long  enough,  you  start  to  believe  it.  

so  why,  then,  is  declan  ‘  never  does  anything  without  writing  down  the  pros  &  cons  in  a  neat  little  pocket  journal  &  leaving  it  a  week  to  look  it  over  with  a  clear  head  ’  t.  lynch  leaning  against  the  hood  of  his  car,  appraising  adam  parrish  &  the  forest  before  them  ?  dialling  the  situation  back,  why  is  he  alone  with  adam  in  the  first  place  ?  they  are  questions  declan  doesn’t  have  an  answer  to,  &  every  part  of  him  screams  out  in  protest.  it’s  not  the  UNFAMILIARITY  of  the  situation  that  he  baulks  at.  it’s  the  unknowingness  of  why  he’s  here  in  the  first  place.

he  lives  his  life  by  the  rules  of  reciprocity  :  declan  almost  never  does  something  unless  there’s  something  in  it  for  him,  too.  but  parrish  has  little  to  give  to  declan  that  he  doesn’t  already  have.

eldest  lynch  boy  pulls  out  his  phone,  despite  knowing  they’d  lost  signal  some  half-mile  back.  screen  blinks  into  existence.  no  service.  battery  low.  a  quick  glance  at  his  watch  proves  it  just  to  be  as  FRUITLESS  AN  ENDEAVOUR,  the  hands  having  been  stuck  for  the  past  twenty-three  minutes  at  04 : 18p.  fuck.  he's  supposed  to  be  at  a  dinner  later  tonight.  the  phone  slides  back  into  his  pocket,  a  comfortable  &  reassuring  weight.

❝           if   only   someone   knew   a   little   bit   more   about    this   situation.           ❞         of   course,       that    person   would   be   you.        you’ve    never    had   a   moral    compass     [     unless    it   had   to   do   with   anyone    you    cared    about     ]    and   you    weren’t    about   to   start.       head    tilts   to   the   side    as    book    is    put    down.       there’s   quite   the   dramatic   sigh   that   leaves    you.      smirk    is    evident    on    lips    as    eyebrows    furrow.         ❝           that    would   be   so    helpful,      wouldn’t    it?           ❞            

     they  lay  shoulder  to  shoulder  besides  tiny  henrietta,  each  street  laid  out  with  care  by  its  creator,  a  heavy  sigh  escaping  her  lips.  in  moments  like  these,  it  seems  as  if  they  have  run  out  of  time,  and  yet,  have  all  the  time  in  the  world.  it’s  strange,  running  and  running  and  running  with  an  endgame  in  sight  ---  a  welsh  king,  some  long  hidden  wisdom,  and  a  wish  bestowed  upon  the  one  who  wakes  ---  yet  never  feeling  any  closer  to  the  finish  line.  she  knows  what  they’re  searching  for,  but  deep  down,  the  why  has  always  left  her  perplexed.  and  despite  the  confusion,  she’s  more  all  in  on  this  quest  than  she  has  been  with  anything  in  her  life  that’s  come  before.
