26. does your nationality get portrayed in Hollywood/American media? what do you think about the portrayal?

*cracks knuckles* fun fact: I have dual nationality. So it’s time to get real with shitty rep and stupidity.

I am half British, half Italian. The British representation in American media tends to be received pronunciation pompous bumbling intellectuals or just villains. The only part of Britain that exists is London, but if it’s not London then it’s Scotland, which is just one thing. There is no regional variation, no nuance, no acknowledgement of the British working class unless it’s some badly-accented skipping chimney sweep. Thing is, at least we have SOME representation, even if it’s, you know, terrible. Also what the fuck is up with the obsession with our teeth?

On the other side, we have Italian representation. Which is... terrible. Just fucking disgusting. The only kinds of Italians are southerners, and the only kinds of southerners are Sicilians. And that’s without talking about the sheer volume of fucking mafiosi in everything, which is INCREDIBLY offensive. The Italian shown in American media hasn’t been Italian for a very, very long time, they know nothing of their language, their heritage, their national and regional culture. Americans know even less about Italy than they know about Britain and it shows.

Basically, British protrayals are bad but Italian portrayals are trash and I hate them.

13. does your country (or family) have any specific superstitions or traditions that might seem strange to outsiders?

HAHAHAHAHA. Like I said, I’m half Italian, and there’s nothing quite as superstitious as Italians. A hearse drove by the other day and my dad touched his balls. It’s a thing you do. Don’t put the bread on the table upside down - it’s bad luck. Don’t hand salt to someone - it’s bad luck. That said, I got some from my very English mother too, like don’t put shoes on the table (it’s bad luck) and don’t kill spiders (it’s bad luck). My parents weren’t young when they had me, and I’m 27 now, so I’ve inherited lots of bits and pieces from them that I just do without thinking.

14. do you enjoy your country’s cinema and/or TV?

Loaded question. I’ve never been a big fan of Italian television and it’s not really accessible anymore since I’ve moved back to the UK. I won’t go out of my way to watch it. I don’t watch Italian TV series because they’re generally not... good. I’ll occasionally watch Inspector Montalbano, but that’s more to criticise the subtitles. Maybe things have gotten a bit better since I’ve been gone, it has been a little over four years. That said I do feel sort of happy when Italian actors are cast in international productions.

UK television kind of happens to be better quality, for me. Just in general. I’ll more happily watch a British tv series or movie than an Italian one, and that’s usually because of the much much higher budget. That’s just a fact of life.
