An Exception to the Rule
A small, furry friend influences the hearts of the flatmates.
Let me tell you all, I spent quite a long time pondering over this question: What fic should I use as my first review? I expected to find a longer one, or even write a review over some of the submissions we’ve received in the past. Little did I expect that I’d find one randomly whilst searching for a fic.
This fic is really, really sweet. I’ve always loved the ‘Sherlock and John get a pet’, since I love them working together to overcome their differences to help something that they actually both care of outside of a case. Parentlock is like this too, but that’s for another time. In this fic, as it usually is, John brings home a gorgeous cat, who takes a liking to Sherlock. Soon, that bond between them help to carry the plot-line along in such a subtle and sweet way, that it doesn’t feel rushed or overly ‘trope-y’, to coin a term. She also acts somewhat of a metaphor in a couple of places, and I think that that’s brilliant. Aside from the cat, there are other factors to this fic that really stand out to me. For example, just how Sherlock and John are portrayed. They seem to be in sync, and perhaps more domestic than usual, but it’s a nice change. It seems realistic as to how a lazy moment in 221B might actually be like (when Sherlock’s not shooting holes in the wall while bored, of course). Overall, this fic is slow, and sweet, and yet at the same time delightfully paced. This fic is just a great read, albeit slightly short, and has its golden lines. (I’ll let you find the lines that really stand out, since putting them here would give a lot away). If you’re looking for a domestic Johnlock, or a slower, sweeter Johnlock, I highly recommend this one.
