I tried to read Udolpho some years ago, and ended up constantly distracted. What Radcliffe work would you suggest for beginners?
Well, Iāve only read about half of her books so far, so I canāt give you as complete an answer as I might like. All of her books are paced more slowly than most gothic novels, and I think she introduces characters in a way that, while extremely interesting to me, isnāt actually very immediately accessible. That said, I think one of the two or three-volume novels, like The Italian or A Sicilian Romance, would be easier to start with than the four-volume Udolpho. Sicilian Romance has some engaging familial dynamics and a lot of appealing solidarity among the female characters; The Italian, as a response to The Monk, is really generically interesting.
ladybedivere said: I havenāt actually read any Radcliffe (I know, I know) but I did start reading The Monk a while back and I donāt get how anyone would believe thatās a less āabsurdā contribution to the genre except that they knew the authorsā genders.
To be fair, I think there are several things about The Monk which have led to it being given more critical respect than Radcliffeās work and, while all of those are gendered, they are not straightforwardly so. The Monk is often seen to be, on some level, parodic, and explosion of gothic generic conventions and gender roles, and modern people are often more tolerant of āexcessā when they think thereās an element of parody involved. But that parodic mode is more readily open to male authors, largely because, I think, it involves a distancing of oneself from the reality of the threats typical to the genre.
Also, across the board, modern people tend to think thereās something more literary/artistic/serious about fiction which inhabits the perspective of a perpetrator of violence, rather than a victim of it.

you gotta do what you gotta do to survive, sometimes. if youāre getting the money and fluffing the resume, all the better (just make sure any contract you make is ironclad bc he is a lawyer and men will screw you over w/out a second thought)

YOU GO GIRLĀ
For you, on your birthday...
My darling long-distance BFF, my second sister, my keeper of the bad 90s-vampire jokes and Mr. Darcy feels - even though there are miles between us and sometimes years pass between visits, I'm so glad to know that our friendship can pick up at any moment as though we were together yesterday, and I know my life would be missing something huge and important without you. So I wish you the happiest of birthdays, my Tolkien princess, with all my love!
Alandra, my sister, you are friend and family to me. Knowing you my whole life has made it sweeter and better than you can ever know. In between inside jokes, Disney, and interesting reading choices your presence is such a gift. You are always in my heart and thoughts and I will always be there for you no matter what. Thank you for your friendship and love. I LOVE YOU SO SO MUCH!!!<3<3<3
