Warning: The stories Iām talking about here contain dark or heavy content. If you are interest in any of these stories- Iād advise looking up what it contains. You are free to message me about it and Iād be happy to tell you anything you want to know about the story.
So one of my favorite types of stories are the false cute ones. The story where it comes off as cute and cuddly- giving the viewer a false sense of security and reveals itself as a horror story or it uses the cute, colorful art style to make the horror story or dark moments more disturbing.
Some of my favorites I can list off the top of my head are:
Beneath the Trees Where Nobody Sees, The Mysterious House, Stray Dogs, Bonnieās Bakery, Padak, and LacyGames.com.
The Amazing Digital Circus could fall under this category due to its colorful and cartoon style- most of the posters not showing much of the psychological thriller themes within it.
Iāve heard of a horror comic with a cute art style called Feral which is focused on cats trying to survive a rabies apocalypse. I donāt plan on picking it up soon because I donāt think Iām ready to read about cats in dire situations like that- it looks like itās going to be dark and gory but I will read it eventually!
I was considering adding the South Korean movie- Leafie: A Hen in the Wild to the list but Iām not sure if I consider it a horror story. Just grim but hopeful tale to symbolize what is considered natural parts of life- itās not meant to scare you, it is meant to grab your attention and leave you thinking about some things after the movie is over. With it having a bittersweet, emotional and somewhat hopeful ending.
Possibly Return of the Pumpkin Rabbit, the sequel to The Mysteruoud House- also fits in this category due to the style the kids are drawing in. These cute little paper doll designs.
I might ramble about these stories later on simply because I just love the ways the stories are told with the cute art style being used as an advantage to make it more disturbing.
