“STANDING ROCK IS EVERYWHERE”
by Dimitri Kadiev
Following a June, 2017 meal service at the LA Catholic Worker Hospitality Kitchen—more commonly referred to as the Hippie Kitchen—a small group gathered a block away to dedicate an important new work of art on the back of the Catch 21 restaurant at Central and Gladys Avenues. Kadiev’s colorful work not only supports the battle over Sacred Water enjoined by Native Americans far to the north, it draws a direct connection to a situation much closer to home for the homeless on the nearby streets. In blessing the mural, LA Catholic Worker’s Jeff Dietrich noted scarcity of fresh water available to the homeless of Skid Row, the soup kitchen being the primary or only source for many. Albuquerque artist Dimitri Kadiev, who has traveled the US and beyond creating art for Catholic Worker, was assisted on this complex wall by Megan Ramsey, Genaro Leal, Ray Lewis, and Rufo Noriega. @catch21la
